How long does it take to get thru.....

Shoot....I work for a vet...never heard of a blue kong only a vet could order. In fact....she was helping me try to find toys today that would be good for Gibby AND her Rotties.............but she wasn't really looking for kongs as I was. Thanks everyone for the good wishes though. And it sure does make me feel better ( kind of sadistic,,,,isn't it???? ) to hear the stories about other dogs eating things like this.

I did not take him in today...when I spoke to my vet ( after she joked "hey Dyan....am I going to do blockage surgery today?????" She said at this point I should just watch him carefully and see if he keeps going on like he is.  She said she just read about a rubber duck that was sitting in a dogs stomach for over a year!"

Oh.................but what I forgot to tell you...is at 4:30 this morning Gibby threw up more blue rubber.... 6 pieces to be exact........ and before I could grab them...he woofed back 2 of the 6. Crap....now if that was the end....we know for sure it is NOT now.   His stool was firm and fine today when I took him out after work...so it might have been the vasoline and its gone now.

My boss has an American Bulldog that can demolish black kongs and she has yet to make a dent in her blue kong - they are def stronger even if they aren't marketed as such.  Only vets can order them, but we have a vet on staff here at the humane society so we'll be stocking them in our store soon. :D

Okay guys.....so my vet actually laughed at me when I asked her about a kong you can only buy from the vet.   She said a few things....including some derogatory thing about my dog boards..( she gets mad when I say " people on my dog board say this or that..." )   I believe she is falls into the catagory of the vets and medics that talked about the "internet crazies" when the PH 6 was killing dogs and people were writing about it.   She said the vets can sell anything..... some have boutiques set up in their office......  and then went on to say "if a rubber ball showed up in a stomach why would a kong not show up?" Then went on to say that she just read in a medical thing that a rubber duck was found in a stomach by xray.....so why wouldn't a kong?  And what the heck does the color blue have to do with anything?  ANDDD finally the kong that Gibby ate was blue.

So..........I would  LOVE to know if you guys that are talking about the kong you can only get from the vet has a name or company or advertising.....so I can either show her and have her order it or at least say " na na na.....here!"

Anyway...I was hoping he would have puked up again this morning since we KNOW he ate a couple of peices that he threw up yesterday.....but he didn't. However.... when I went on "poop patrol" after work.....there were a few pieces in his stool.  They must have been a little smaller than the ones he threw up........   Gosh...hope one day they will all be out.

It says on the packaging that it's only sold through veterinarians...tell your vet to hush about the internet crazies Stick out tongue

If it helps, I work for a vet, and they'd likely be the same way.

ETA: cursed link not going where it's supposed to...go to 'products', then 'toys' and you should find the blue kong :)

All I know is they are referred to as Kong Blue, and we get ours from MWI - I guess it's a vet supply place.  They ARE stronger - I've seen it with my own eyes - and are radio-opaque (I would assume that means they will show up more clearly than other stuff).  As far as I know the color has nothing to do with it.

Dyan it sounds like what you're referring to is not really a Kong product, just something made of similar rubber.  By some chance did the toy that got eaten look like any of these?

If so, those are made by Booda, not Kong.  That might explain the lack of durability.

Yeah...those are them.  Actually I posted that first post...you must not have seen it...the barbell one is the one he ate..it was called Dogzilla on the package...which I knew  since I had bought another one since he liked them so well, and it was never taken out of the package.  He also had the one called Free which I took back with the others yesterday and got a real Kong Extreme.

You know....he really never spent anytime chewing all of these things..... maybe a bit for a couple of minutes.... I used them to fill with things when we went away.  The Free was just laying around but the Dumbell I would put away until I went out...then fill with kibble.  I don't really know what got into  him when he did that.

Of course I am still on "watch" and "poop patrol" ( Ick! ) and found quite a few pieces in last night poop!  So its still coming out one end or another...no telling when it will be out. Just hopefully it will ALL come out.

Oh I'm sorry to hear of your trials with your toy eating dog!  I sure hope that he continues to pass these items.  This thread is quite timely as our toy eating dog ate not a toy, but a stick! on Monday night.  I am keeping an eye on her to see if she develops any problems and have considered taking her to the vet's for an x-ray but haven't yet...  she eats all kinds of things and passes them or pukes them but a stick?  This was a wood dowel that I was using as a touch stick and she ate it!  I found about 1/3 of it in pieces on the floor.  And some of those pieces had sharp points!  Ugh...

Dyan, I hope Gibby is feeling better!! Silly puppy  head!!!

Gus has put us through a few scares.  He eats sticks/wood if you don't watch him.  Yeah, he's like, seven or something.  Maybe when he's ten or so he'll grow up.

Anyway, once he ate a bunch of wood off a rotten log and it impacted.  It was over the weekend and I knew what was happening and that we were down to hours before he'd have to be opened up, but I knew it wasn't a solid object either and for us there's always the question of what would be worse, waiting until our regular vet opens, or the two hour car ride to the e-vet (longer if there's traffic)?

I asked Patrick to go take him on a long walk and if he didn't  "perform" on the walk we'd be hitting the road.  But, amazingly, on the walk he started pooping out wood bits.  Patrick actually brought it back on a leaf!

It took about a week for that to work its way down and get "stuck" and then back things up to the point that he was throwing up poop-smelling barf.

Here's to hoping the entire thing passes!  How are you gonna know?  Are you keeping them all and putting them together like a 3D jigsaw puzzle?  Hehehe!  Gib you silly boy!

Ha....great idea....for my husband to do!!!    Well,,,he passed a few small ones in his stool first on Sat night ( ate the thing Friday night ). Then he puked twice early Sunday morning, then passes some in his stool on Sunday afternoon.....then got diarrhea with NONE in it...then puked up a few more pieces on Monday morning and woofed a few of them back down before I could grab them.... so I knew he still  had some in his system.  But the last couple dumps he took had some peices of rubber in it.  That blue rubber is a lot easier to see.....lol!

But your right....have no way to know if there is any left or not.  Sure hope not.

Well, remember that Thor had three rubber balls in his stomach and at least one of them was in there for at least 8 months... so... that's why I said go to the x-ray (sorry, the thing is: I'm traumatized!)

I glad Gibby has passed so many pieces, he will be doing great in no time. Can I ask for a few pictures of him, when you can? Smile
