How long does it take to get thru.....

I think the real risk to dogs in these situations is 1) when the owner doesn't know that the dog ingested anything, 2) when the owner doesn't know the warning signs of trouble, and 3) when the owner doesn't watch carefully for signs of trouble.

Because you're a conscientious and educated owner, I think Gibby's prognosis is very, very good, because if a problem does show up, you'll be both willing and able to take action quickly.

Also I think it's a really good sign that he's passing small pieces. Keep an eye on him and keep doing what you've been doing. I know when Rascal had his potential blockage the vet scared the pants off of me and I was convinced Rascal would die without surgery. Well, he didn't have surgery, I monitored him verrrry carefully like you've been doing with Gibby, and he was just fine. Took a long time for everything to pass, but it did with no problems.

Hope Gibby's pooping like a pro and feeling better soon!

Dyan -- BE CAREFUL of the Vaseline -- you can rile up the pancreas SUPER BAD with that.  That was what pushed my Prissy over the edge.  The **vet** at the time told me to give her Mineral OIl (which is essentially what vaseline is made of) because we thot she'd eaten chicken bones.  The mineral oil completely pushed the pancreas over the edge and I nearly lost her.

You're better off with bread and food.  Since Gibby already has a touchy stomach don't push the pancreas that hard.

Well...things are looking a bit better. At 5:30 this morning Gibby woke us up puking guess what.....bright blue rubber pieces....  I didn't really see them that well because I just picked up a handful with my hand before he tried to eat it back again....and ran to the kitchen to get paper towels and threw them in the garbage....    I sprayed down the rug real well with water and took him back to bed with me.....and at 6:30 we woke up puking more bright blue rubber pieces.   They were pretty big pieces too...except its all relative since he is a Great Dane.  Don't know if all of it is out now...but its got to be pretty close.  He kept acting like he wanted to eat and since he very often eats his breakfast at about 5AM on days that I work.....he was hungry...so I figured I have to start someplace and fed him just a cup of the soft BilJac, with his probiotic that he gets every morning.   So that was a couple of hours ago...and he has been okay since.....crying to lick his Dads yogurt container.  He seems comfortable enough.   Don't know if its all out or not....so I sure will continue to monitor him for several days.

Callie, I gave him a couple of tablespoons yesterday morning before a meal. Then one more Tablespoon before his next meal...then I did'nt give him any more...although I put a little veggetable oil in his supper meal as it was dry chicken, ground beef and veggies with brown rice....I thought it might be a little dry.          When my pit-bull type dog ate the razor blades the vet told me to buy her the biggest jar of vasoline I could find and feed it all to her.... so I figured this little bit wouldn't hurt him.   But when I talked to the girl at the vets last night she said probably not a good idea it might make him sicker.

For now....I'm not doing anything but continuing small meals to day....maybe tomorrow depending on how it goes today.

And oh.....the little sweetie....while I was trying to sop up the moisture out of the two spots where he puked this morning.....I laid a paper towel on one spot...was working on the other and he came and tried to eat the paper towel from the first spot. Give me a break.....I can tell this guy is going to be trouble.

It's good to hear that it is getting out of his system. A vet visit might still be in order but at least things are moving.

While cleaning the yard the other day (no telling how old), I found a digested rat carcass (cotton rat, about the size of a mouse).  No telling when he ate it and when he eliminated the remains. Sometimes, dogs eat stuff and it passes through.

Stil, a vet visit couldn't hurt.

EEKS!!!!   No more throw ups.....but just now I took him out ( he didn't ask...I just try to get him out before it started raining harder ) and he had a really runny stool. NOT water...but really soft...and no blue things by the way.   Somehow I was glad for the throw ups...but this kind of scares me.   He has eaten quite a bit today.

Dyan I'm so glad he throw up, that means a big part already is out. About the runny poop, maybe it was because of the oil and vaseline. Thor had soft poop a couple days after I started to give him fish oil and after that he was ok.

I think the worst (not know what happened with the toy) already passed. Good vibes from me to Gibby and you.

Thank you so much.....its been a toughie worrying about him, I'll tell you.   Was concerned that he has a touchy stomach to begin with.... even to the point of taking him off kibble for the time being to see if it all clears up.....then he goes and does something like this.   What a wonderful dog..........but gee I love him to death!

the runny stool might be from the oil/vaseline. Aesop can't eat any weird substances without getting gross poos.

I'd probably still take him in on Monday. How long after eating the toy was the vomiting? It's a little worrisome to me that it was still in his stomach where it could be vomited up.

Gibby, YOU are one heck of a mess! I hope you're feeling better, very, very soon, and give your mom a big ol Dane lean, for me (ya know, they're like hugs;).

He ate the kong on Friday night, and vomitted early Sunday morning. Some of the smaller pieces were starting to come out the other end Sat night... the pieces he vomited up were pretty big.

He has been eating and drinking and playing all day.  He only took that one poop in the afternoon....and then he didn't ask to go out.......I took him and kind of talked him into being a "goodboy!"  He has been eating small meals yesterday and today.... 5 meals to be exact.   AND he is looking to eat everytime someone opens the fridge or goes in the pantry. So he doesn't feel sick at all.

I will talk to the vet tomorrow morning when I go to work if he makes it thru the night without any mishaps and eats and goes out in the morning regular.   I can always have my DH bring him in....but I read on one of my Dane boards that a dog there ate a toy and his owner was worried...then some posts later he vomited it up...looking back on the dates it was about 2 days later.  So I'm not sure how long is too long that it sits in the stomach trying to be digested....  for sure I will ask my vet what she thinks first thing.

Jennie......he isn't a leaner so far.....we were just talking about that.. Bubby was a MAJOR leaner.....but don't know if they start right away or eventually......Ollie is not a leaner either.  He is a "toucher" though...has to be touching at all times.....equally like hugs...LOL

Good thoughts for Gibby for a regular poop tomorrow and to you for reassuring news from the vet in the morning.

Ziva just puked up some foil candy wrappers she ate yesterday morning about 10pm tonight - still mostly the way they went in with a bit of extra bile and hair - ewwwww.

Dunno if that makes you feel any better or not, but figured I'd include the story along with my well wishes on further passage of blue stuff.  Perhaps Mr. Gibby should be upgraded to the blue Kongs you can only get from a vet - tougher than even the black kongs and visible on xray. ;)

A friend's lab puked up part of a stuffed toy 3 days after he ate it - it's non-digestible

I've been told they are not tougher than the black ones, but I did hear they are digestible - I should email kong about them

My boss has an American Bulldog that can demolish black kongs and she has yet to make a dent in her blue kong - they are def stronger even if they aren't marketed as such.  Only vets can order them, but we have a vet on staff here at the humane society so we'll be stocking them in our store soon. :D
