Leaving a colar on 24/7

    Leaving a colar on 24/7

Is that safe? I've switched Sam to a martingale collar with an ID tag 24/7. Is that safe? Can he choke?

Personally if I were going to leave a collar on an unsupervised dog, I would only use a break away collar.  There is always a chance a collar can get snagged or a ID tag caught and a dog strangling.

Nothing is 100% safe. I wouldn't leave a martingale on 24/7, ever. The slip part of it could dangle and get caught.

My escape artist and my puppy wear a collar.  Well, the puppy not currently b/c he outgrew his tiny rolled leather collar and the new one is a little too big for my comfort.  But Coke's is a thin rolled leather collar and he has so much coat, you can't even see the collar.  Kenya is nekkid b/c her coat is flat and she got caught on her crate door.  Also she has never run off or even tried.  She wears ID in public or when I have people coming over to let her out or take care of her.

Tootsie goes naked at home. Her fur doesn't lay right with it on, at least thats what I think. I would never leave a martingale on 24/7, to risky.

I wouldn't leave a martingale on when he's not supervised.  There are too many "what ifs" for me to be comfortable leaving it on.

My guys are naked at home, & sometimes when we go out, depending on where we go.

My dogs rarely have collars on. Too much risk of injury. HOWEVER if I had risk of my dog getting loose when I am not around I would never take the collar off either.

Last summer we were at my in-laws. DH was out and about in the yard with his father and all three dogs. Teddi was about 9 months, and Maxine were rough housing. Teddi got a hold of Max's collar, somehow flipped over Max's back so the collar became caught on Teddi's lower jaw (wrapped around Teddi's jaw) Now it was also a tournequet around Max's throat. Thank HEAVEN DH was right there. He got his father's branch cutters (closet thing to scissors near by) and cut Max's collar off. Both Teddi and Max could have been seriously injured had he not been there. However at my in-laws they need to wear their collars, so if they wander away they might be brought home. They run loose there quite a bit, as there is no fenced yard. So this year they againg wore their collars. I just make sure when they have them on I know where they are.

Well, having no collar is NOT an option at the moment. So, I'll give him back the flat collar althou it screws up his fur.

It's not an option due to him being outside most of the time, him being unneutered, him having no microchip, and the idiots around here don't take 'stray' dogs to the vet to check for a chip, and therefore check for an owner.

    Thanks everybody!

Cheyanne wears her collar and tags 24/7.

Lillie and Fynn dont wear collars in the play pen(kennel),house, crates. Everywhere else they do. Fynn doesnt because it would leave a ring around his neck and cant have that in the show ring. Lillie because I like her new collar to stay clean!! And if I let her wear it in the play pen she would have it dirty in no time. And Samantha has a bad habit of dragging the dogs around the house if I leave their collars on. Yes a 30lb 3 year old can drag 50lb dogs around the house if they have collars on!!!

Joker doesnt wear his in the crate but everywhere else. If I take it off for a long period of time during class all he wants to do is scratch his neck. Kinda hard to show a dog in that position!!

Around here if my dogs for some odd reason got loose and ran off it wouldnt do any good for them to be wearing collar or tags. I know from experience.

ETA: Opps I forgot about Kujo!!! She wears her collar and tags 24/7. More for me to know when she's moving around in the house and Im not in the same room as her. She has a sneaky bad habit of pooping behind my computer desk and the couch.

Tags worked for my Tuck - I got a call everytime he got out. Normally from the same few people. LOL!

Sam's never slipped a collar - and people in my area are pretty good about calling if they see tags.

Sam has a *bad* ring around his neck.....I'm going to see about getting a different collar tomarrow...

Casey is naked in the house. He wears his tags/collar when we're out in public, at the park, on a walk, etc. because county laws here are all animals must be licensed - and you need to be able to provide proof on the spot in the form of the tag.

My cats wear collars 24/7 -  but they are breakaway collars. Foster pups almost always keep their collars on, just in case, except when they are in the crate.

    Everyone is microchipped.

I would look into a smaller, lighter collar for tag wear - they aren't as heavy on the neck and less likely to leave a mark. I love my martingale - but I would not leave it on alone, too risky. I would also look into a microchip - as another backup.

I only have collars on my pups when we are walking.  They wrestle too much and will take eachother down by pulling the other's collar.

We leave Rory's collar on 24/7. She doesnt like it when we take it off. She just waits and trys to get get it from you until you put it back on. We call it her necklace and tell her that she has a pretty necklace..lol. I have no idea why she wants it on so bad, maybe shes just used to it. I started leaving it on all the time because my friend and her 3 yr old and 9 yr old come over during the day to let her out and I didnt want to take the chance that one of the kids leaves the door open and she gets out without a tag.

mine only wear collars when they are leashed. they dont have any tags on. i'm pretty sure, if they got lost it wouldnt do any good anyways.

Mine have flat collars on all the time.  I don't want to stop and mess with sticking a collar on every time we go out to do chores.  I'm bad enough for forgetting to stick a leash in my pocket so I can tie out a dog if needed.  The working dogs have plastic-coated nylon collars with plates on them. The guard dogs have spiked collars with hanging tags currently - at some point I'll take them down and have a plate put on them but I have to find where I can get that done.  The inside dogs have decorative collars with boomerang tags on them - flat plates that fit over the collar.  I don't like hangy tags, they get caught on stuff.
