    Antlers - great chew!

I bought Bugsy a XL piece of antler the other day and he is absolutely loving having something to chew.  nothing lasts for Bugsy, he can empty a black kong in seconds and cracks marrow bones so he doesn't get those and toys are a joke.  Enter massive thick antler piece and wow is he a happy dog.  And I dont' feel like I just threw my money away.

So if you have a power chewer get some antler Big Smile  The brand I got is called luckybuck antlers

A few questions..............Is there any nutrition to it?  I presume it is safe - even he doesn't seem to be getting chunks off and consistent chewing is only wearing it down after a while.  It is seriously hard but I am assuming it is safe for their teeth.

Spoken from experience I take it?  LOL

It is just a length of thick antler, the smaller ones were sort of tree like but the XL sizes are just stick like.  He took it to bed with him the first night - which really cracked me up

I didn't even know you could buy them!  I have had to rely on the luck of the hunters I know. LOL  My dogs love them and they don't seem to cause any problems, at least in my experience.

Oh, that's interesting. I wonder if those are sold near here. I've never seen them.

Jackie I would love to know some hunters that I could get them from as this thing was pricey but I can see it will definitely last Stick out tongue

Julie lucky buck antlers has a store locator on their site - there are other manufacturers but I can only vouch for this one

All the hunter I know would die before they let a dog have they're hard-erned antlers! It wouldn't matter id it was a cow-horned buck, a 4-pointer, na-da. Nope. Those antlers get screwed to the front face of the shed. The hunting dogs that helped him get it, get a 'nice' dinner of deer guts(maybe) and maybe the bones to chew if it woouldn't start a fight.

Maybe my PaPa would give me a few for Sam - he can destroy a 3ft. raw-hide bone in 2 days or less. I highly doubt my PaPa would share antlers for dogs - bones, maybe....

Here is a place lots of people on another forum ordered online from with satisfaction : link for antlers.

From what the site says, they contain nutrients and minerals. As far as safe for the teeth, my take is that whatever is stronger than a dog's teeth can cause problems but those do not sound worse than raw marrow bones. If you end up with spiked antlers and they become too pointy, you can rub them against concrete to smoothen the edge off.

Ah yes.  There's nothing quite like getting up at night, stumbling toward the bathroom and stepping on a bone that someone left on the floor.

You are right about getting antlers locally , most hunters just look at you as if you are nuts!! But I am not plunking down 30.00 for another chewie for my hounds. Venision Bones are much stronger than beef or lamb  and if you go to a deer processor you can often get them for next to nothing ( I am lucky there are so many processors around here I get them for free.) the big problem is it will give one of my boys the runs like you would not believe if too much meat is left on the bone)

We usually get one or two pair a year.  Some people around here actually hunt for the meat, I guess, and they leave the skulls.  My guard dogs know where they hide the scraps.   Half-decomposed deer head, now that's something decorative!

Bonita - I could probably manage to hound my dog-loving uncle to give me a few bones from the deer he just shot in Nebraska(sp?). 300lbs, and 10 points. I know I can't get the antlers....but a few leg bones or something.....maybe

brookcove - My entire family hunts for meat. Unless the trees make it look bigger then it is, they won't shoot. Having a nice set of antlers is just a plus. =]

Whats the best bone to give a good chewer like Sam other then antlers?
