Kitchen Island question? Easy I promise!

Kitchen Island question? Easy I promise!

What is the distance between your island and your counter?  And how big is your island and how do you like it?  I really need more counterspace and I'm considering putting in an island.  I may or may not wire it, but mostly I'm trying to figure out if I have enough room.

My kitchen from the counter to the wall is a total of 10 feet. I have 46" between my counter and the island. My island is 28"w x 5'd. I wouldn't want it any narrower but could loose a bit of length if I had to. If you have the option to have it wired, do! Appliances such as my toaster, electric fryer and blender I do not keep out, so it's great to have power on the island for when I do use them. Just make sure you have enough room when your oven, dishwasher and fridge doors are open.

My island is 26.25" wide and 50.25" long.  There is 38" between the edge of the island counter-top and the edge of the counter-top where the stove is.  I have enough room to walk around with the oven door wide open.  There is 32" between the island counter-top and the edge of the counter-top where the dishwasher is.  There's about six or seven extra inches when the dishwasher door is open.  Plenty enough to spare, but not enough to walk around it.

My counter-tops have a 1-1/4" overhang, so if I measured from the "body" (cabinets) of the island to the cabinets in the counters I'd have 40.5" between the island and the stove and 34.5" inches between the island and the dishwasher.  I hope that makes sense!

Ditto having your island wired if possible.  I do all my mixing on the island, set the crock-pot on it, use the electric griddle, etc.

If you want to wire the island, it helps if you have a pier and beam foundation.

Or do it the redneck way. Get a long extension cord and drag it over there when you need it, maybe even use a power strip. At least until you can afford an electrician to do the actual circuit installation.

Ron, my wiring in this house all comes from the ceiling.  Its actually a mobil home and I've taken down the pantry/entryway closet to open things up.  There was an outlet on the back side of that, as well as the kitchen/dining room light switch.  Right now its just hanging from the ceiling.  Not at all attractive.  But I'm trying to figure out if I can make an island and have a post coming down with the wiring in it rather than taking it all the way over to the outside wall, down and then through the floor to an island.  I'm having a hard time visualizing it though.  I have to put drywall up where I took the closet down anyway, on the ceiling as the rest of the house has drywalled ceilings now, and I haven't done the floor, so I could do it the harder way if I need to, but  I would have to get someone in to do it.  My dad could if he wasn't so darn busy.

This is about the only time I wish I was still with my ex.  He's an electrician...must be a Ron thing huh?  LOL

How serendipitous. I'll go you one or two better. My FIL used to work for the Lower Colorado River Authority, a power co-op in south Texas. Most of DW's ex-boyfriends and friends were electricians, who also happen to ride motorcycles. I happen to adore motorcycles. And, of course, I am an electrician. There's a theme arising, here.

Anyway, I forgot you live in a mobile home. Great where you live. Around here, I call them tornado magnets. Anyway, maybe it's possible that you could slot the floor from the nearest plug and run some Romex (a brand name. Actually it is NMC - non-metallic sheathed cable over to the island, use a clamp connecter into a 4-square box and get a quad industrial cover (RS) and two plugs. If I were there, it would take about as much time to do it as describe it. Another option. Drill a hole through the floor. Drop NMC out of the box of an existing plug down through the wall and out near the base and through the hole and then under the house and up in the island where you need it. A mobile home is as good as pier and beam for this kind of addition. Squirt weather sealant in the holes. Or slot the floor and do the extension cord thing. Or use wiremold ( a brand name for surface mount raceway for adding plugs. I would put it in the slot in the floor and then refinish the floor so that it wouldn't be a trip hazard. Or some UF 12-2. It's rated for direct burial and exposure. It's a little expensive but it is rugged. Anyway, good luck. I'm thinking good electrical thoughts for you.

i would leave about 1m to 1.2m between your counter and your island. for power you COULD consider maybe some overhead cabinets attached to the ceiling. it would be a bit of extra storage and your power line can run inside the cabinets. you could put your outlet on the bottom of the overhead cabinets... of course i am not very clear on your setup there, so depending on the situation, that might not work... just an idea Smile i LOVE designing kitchens!!!

There's also raceway we call power poles. You will find them in rooms where you have many cubicles with mod furniture built in to a remodeled lease speace or office. They are usually square. You can feed them power from the ceiling. Cut the top off so that the bottom, with the holes for a plug, fits between island and ceiling.

I think this would probably look the best.  The flooring in here is tres old style tile so I'm going to refinish it anway.  Conveniently enough there is also old panel under where the closet came out that needs to be replaced, or drywalled so I can just run the wire down that way.  Let's see, I have installed new light fixtures, changed old rocker switches to toggles, and rewired the plu to my dryer to fit some really oddly shaped pluggin for a big heater and back again.  Do you think I'm qualified?  Hehe, I might have my dad stand in...

It sounds like you've got it figured out. Way to go. Only word of advice I can give is make sure the power is turned off. Plug a lamp or something into that plug and and when you find the right breaker, the lamp will be off.

Pfft... dude, I'm gonna do it during the day so I can just shut off ALL the breakers!  Plenty of light, dogs outside, kids napping...no distractions.  I've been shocked before, no fun.  No fun at all.

Agreed. Electrocution leaves much to be desired.
