Longshot - any other classical / sacred choral music nerds out there?

Longshot - any other classical / sacred choral music nerds out there?

Yeah?  I am looking for something very specific - 'Recession' from Benjamin Britten's 'A Ceremony of Carols", but sung with harmony, and if it's a boy's choir even better.  Told you it was specific.

And if anyone wants to recommend any faves, that would be cool.

So I guess I'm a bigger geek then I thought.. Lol. I like the music but I don't have a specific choir I listen to. But now I'll have to find the song you mentioned just so I can listen to it! Damn you.. Big Smile

I love sacred choral music, but it's not like I studied music in college so I probably don't know that much.  But I can give you some of my faves if you want.

A few weeks ago I saw a girls' choir from Czech Rebublic (yeah, me AND my mom were definitely the youngest people at this concert!) and I've been looking for some of the songs they sung.

Here is the song, but they did it with harmony and that's what I want.

My favorite classical singer is Sarah Brightman. Her voice is perfection and sends chills down my spine. "Ave Maria" and "Time to Say Goodbye" and "Joy of Man" are excellent but they tend to be arias or solo pieces.

Handel's "Messiah" is a good bet.

That would be great! Big Smile I've never studied music, I just like the sound of it. And I get really weird looks in the house when I'm listening to classical music.

Me!!!!!!! Big SmileGeeked   :::raises hand and jumps madly about the room:::

I was a music major in college, and was in choir all the way up until I finished school.

    Favorites:

    * Any music by Giovanni Palestrina (but I have a huge soft spot for "Sicut Cervus";), specifically sung by the Tallis Scholars.

    * Tomas Luis de Victoria - "O Magnum Mysterium" - Choir of Westminster Cathedral

    * Orlando de Lassus - "Tristis est Anima mea" - Osnabruck Boys Choir

Those are just the first three that come to mind.  I'm a HUGE 16th century choral music fan in general.  I could listen to all of the music of the aforementioned composers all day long.  The music produced during the Renaissance polyphony is so...emotional for me.  The harmonies are so rich in spite of all the rules enforced upon the composers of this time period.  It's without a doubt my favorite era of choral music.

Hey I love the Tallis Scholars' stuff!  Most of my faves are a bit older than yours, I really love Baroque (not just choral music, but all of it) and older, but that's just in general.  My favorite piece right now is Spem in Alium, done by the Tallis Scholars.  This is a piece I need to hear live before I die.  I even like the string quartet version by Kronos Quartet.

I'll try to find the pieces you mentioned.  If you know of any other good ones, or CDs/collections let me know.  I'm kind of a song-by-song person so it's hard for me to find stuff I really love since there's so much material to sort through.

Don't know much, but I like it :) Thanks for sharing that song, Liesje.

    I really love Baroque

Please forgive, I can't help myself.

If it ain't baroque, don't fix it.

    Thankyouverymuch.

BEST MUSIC GEEK DISCOVERY EVER!!! Apparently "Margotlorena" on YouTube has posted videos of tons of choral works WITH the score!  The visual part is the score, the auditory part, the music.  How cool is that?!  I love being able to see the score when I'm listening to a piece.  I just stumbled across her account on a Google search for the actual title of a CD I liked.  Cool!  A link to her homepage is: here.

If you like the Spem in Alium, you might like Missa Prolationum by Ockeghem.  The Missa Prolationum is completely done in mensuration canons.

I even like the string quartet version by Kronos Quartet.

I love the Kronos Quartet.  They're amazing.  I started out playing violin and piano (my major instrument in college was violin), and I wish that I could have been in a quartet like the Kronos.  Their range and versatility is incredible.  If you like string quartet music, and enjoy contemporary rock, you'd probably like Bond.  Great sound and technique, but rock-ish instead of classical.

I really love Baroque (not just choral music, but all of it)

I really like Baroque myself.  Especially Bach, you can't love Baroque and not love Bach. Smile  I love all of the...rules of the Baroque period.  I'm particularly attached to Bach's organ fugues.

Ooh, this is the geekiest conversation I've had in a long time, it's awesome. Geeked

Haha, yes I do love Bach.  That was always my favorite to play when I still played piano.  It was so...mathematical. I never learned to read music well, but playing Bach came easy.

Well I know what I'm doing tomorrow.. Lol. Filling up my MP3 player...I miss my classical stuff. When I was the highschool band, we had to play Beethoven's 5th.. All of it... *dies* We did it, and performed it at the Music Festival of that year but man was it TOUGH! keeping up the speed and everything was harsh!

LMAO!  My women's choir is singing the Ceremony of Carols for our Christmas Concert.

I'll be honest....I hate it.  My composer side despises everything he did with it....I'm a jerk though.

We sang Salmo 150 by Aguilar this year, as well as Psalm 150 by Rutter.

    • Gold Top Dog

I'm  not sure exactly what you are asking, but I have that piece on a CD entitled "Christmas Angels" by the Vienna Choir Boys.

Hey Liesje, have you ever listened to the Masters of Chant?
