OMG! One of my worst fears realized, lol!

My Mercury S***ble had to go to the shop again this week.  Muffler is loud, breaks are squealing, heat doesn't work, engine running hot.  So, our usual guy says there's a crack in the coolant thingy and fixes that - heat works and engine is normal temp.  He said something was broken on the back brakes so he fixed that.   The muffler pipe has one hole, not a big deal, to expensive to replace the entire unit so we left it alone.  Last night I drove the car home on the highway, this morning I drove to work, and an hour ago I drove home for lunch.  I get in to leave and am a block away when I realize I can't fully stop the car!  I was standing on the brake and the car only really came to a complete stop b/c it coasted.  I turned around, put my hazards on, and coasted home.  Luckily my driveway has a slight incline, lol!  I'm really glad that happened a block from home, in a residential neighborhood.  There's no noise or gridning or the anti-lock going on - the brakes just don't stop the car!  So now I'm stuck at home (darn!) waiting for a co-worker to come get me.  The mechanic didn't answer his phone.  #$(%*#$)(^)#@*%#)#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yikes, that's scary to even imagine. It could've been so much worse though. I hope the mechanic has an explanation (and apology) for this.

I'm glad you're ok!  It's so lucky that you were close to home when the brakes gave out.  I hope that it's not an expensive fix, and that hopefully the muffler and brakes will be the end of your car trouble.

He said something was broken on the back brakes so he fixed that.

Then what the heck did he fix, if now they don't work at all?

I commiserate...my last two cars have been Ford Tauruses, the sister car to the Sable.  When these cars break down, it always seems like EVERYTHING goes wrong at the same time!

Here's to hoping that the rest of the day goes better!

I'd be looking for a new mechanic!  Doesn't answer his phone, does he work from under a shady tree?  Get your money back for the brake repair and go somewhere else.  May cost you more than this guy but gosh brakes are so vital when it comes to stopping 2000 lb hunks of metal.  Thnak goodness you weren't in an accident! Sorry you are having car problems.  I hate, hate, hate car trouble.

Oh I have *so* been there.  I went to Sheetz w/ a friend of mine once, and am so thankful that there was a sidewalk w/ a curb going around it.  Because otherwise I would have been right through the window.  No brakes.  I was out of brake fluid so my Dad figured that was what was wrong.  Put more in and I went to WV to visit someone.  I picked her up from work and went to pull back onto the highway, and again No Brakes.  I had to drive home from WV to MD w/ only the E-brake, which by the way does not stop you very quickly.  Turns out there was a hole in my brake line.  I don't think I've ever been as scared as I was then.

Wow that's scary! I am glad that you were so close to home and it turned out ok

A girl I went to college with had her brakes give out on the highway, her solution:  pull to the side and put the car in park lol.  It wrecked her transmission, but she stopped lol

I am glad you are safe though!  How scary, I don't think I would react as well as you did!

I'm not surprised he didn't answer.  Typically he only answers in the morning and after 5 b/c he's working on the cars in the shop all day, it's just him.  He returns calls the same day so we'll see....  This is not the first time something has gone wrong with the rear brakes but this is the first time he has worked on that issue.  He is a smalltime mechanic, very fair prices and he knows his cars.  He's got a lot full of 20+ year old foreign cars in working condition.

Yeah it's not the mechanic it's the CAR!!!  I HATE THIS CAR!!!  It's really bad, b/c DH's dad bought it when he lived in a small town.  Type of thing where there's just one car lot, you know the guy and don't know enough about cars to really shop around....so he got this car which is everything I DONT want.  Then DH paid it off in college so he kept it.  That's the problem.  It's paid off.  Even putting a few hundred into it every few months is cheaper than a $200-$300/mo car loan plus the increased insurance.

I have had great luck with the following cars: Pontiac Firebird 86, Chevy Cavalier 93, and Honda Accord 89.  Oldies but they keep rolling!
