    relief from an ear infection?

I mentioned in the health section that Wyatt has an ear infection. He's on medications and steroids, but unless he's sleeping he's miserable. He keeps scratching it, and when he does he screams, he wont stop flapping his ears, and he walks with his head sideways. I picked some of the goo off the inside flap, but it didn't really help. Any ideas on what i can do?

Poor Wyatt :( - what medication did they give you? Did they clean the ears out or give you something to use? You might try giving him some benadryl just to calm the itchiness down.

Is it bacterial or yeast?  Yeast from the sounds of it.  I've always found the Blue Power Ear stuff to be awesome and it truly SOOTHES so much (that's what the boric acid does).  If you can't find the recipe on here I can email it to you when I get home.  Honestly, I have even used it on MY ears.

Aw, Wyatt.  Kenya has a bad yeast infection right now too.  She was on abx for 2 weeks to kill a staph infection, which let the yeasties get out of control and her ears smelled like a bag of sweaty hockey pads and stale cheese.  I am wiping out her ears with these pads I get at the pet store and putting in mometamax once or twice a day, massaging it down into the ear canal to kill the yeast.  One ear is basically clear but the other is still bright red and gooey.  Luckily she is leaving it alone but I know it bothers her b/c when I wipe them out she literally twitches and will moan.

Callie I'm not sure what it is, to tell you the truth. BF had to take him to the vet, and he didn't say. Most of the drainage is brown and gooey, but there's also a bit of green nasty in there too. The vet said she thought he had food allergies, and the high pollen count could've aggravated it. He's been on healthwise chicken and oatmeal for a few months now...maybe about 2 mos.So i went and bought taste of the wild fish today. Anyway, she gave me "T8 keto flush", baytril drops, and vetalog.

Lies, I like the description of the smell of Kenya's ears...lol!

I live by the recipe Callie gave me for the blue power - Ari has bad ears, double worse is that she loves to swim.  If it's yeast definitively use the blue power stuff.  Worked better than the prescription the vet put her on!  Ari's ears if not maintained will get red, irritated and brown gunk clogs her up plus they smell.

Hope his ears clear up soon!

That's some pretty heavy duty stuff, so if it were me, I'd stick with it and not add anything else. Not that I don't think the blue powder stuff is good, but I just wouldn't want to cause a reaction with the stuff she gave you. I think the most important thing is probably getting the liquid stuff down in there and massaging it really well. You should be able to hear a squishing sound while you're doing it. I use make-up remover pads saturated with the solution and it helps get the stuff in there without having to squirt it in. It also helps bring out some of the gunk. I hope Wyatt starts to feel better soon.

Blue power ear works like a champ. There's also this stuff that vet gave me when i ran out of the blue power ear stuff. They gave me a flush and an antibiotic, it cleared up Scout's yeast infection (he had blood, flapping itchy ears)

He seems to be feeling a lot better since i did his evening treatment. He even started wrestling with Kaiser, but he squealed when Kaiser hit his ear.

He doesn't like when i put the flush or medicine in, but i massaged it gently, and he loved it. So for the past few hours he has looked so much better than he did earlier...hopefully by tomorrow he'll be feeling better. I'll have to look into the blue stuff for future reference.

Tyson has food allergies, and if he gets something he's not supposed to (guests! Don't feed the dogs, please!) then he gets itchy ears, if not a full blown ear infection. We always use Otomax ear ointment and an ear flush (not sure of the name) but the Otomax ointment always works like a charm.
