Sounds like they were leaning toward the idea that someone had taken her.  A dog would have found her in no time, even a family dog, especially if it heard her crying.  Now my dogs would have probably joined her thinking that it looked like some fun hide and seek game.

I cannot imagine the panic of waking up in the same room you went to sleep and your child missing.  I would have died right then and there of a heart attack!

Did you notice how they said the grandparents house was unfit for children? They then visited the parents house and deemed it unfit also.  I think, without going back and re-reading, CPS has taken the kiddos.  Thankfully Kate was found unharmed but it's sad the story had to end that way.

I also noticed that even though in one house a kid could fall  through the floorboards and disappear, the reason the houses were unfit was because they were too dirty.  Are copious amounts of dog hair considered dirt?

I was wondering the same thing and cringing at the thought that someone's children could be removed because the house was dirty.  I guess it's typical that we don't know enough to know.  My house might be considered dirty to some and be considered clean enough to perform surgery to someone else.

This happened about ten miles from here. I amjust glad she was found.  Let's hope the kids will be returned to their parents.  Believe me, I have seen MUCH worse over the years than that house!
