    Walnuts bad for dogs ???

So I get home to find that Baily has gotten into the garbage can.  There was very little in it.  There was a bag of walnuts.  The shelled kind from the baking aisle in the grocery store.  I have no idea how much he ate.

Are they toxic ?  I have found reference to moldy nuts outside still in the hull being bad...........

Yeah, if they were all moldy that'd be a big problem. But a some store-bought baking walnuts are probably fine unless he's got a sensitive tummy or ate a ton, in which case you may see some GI upset. I think you're in the clear. keep an eye on him and let us know ;)

Any tree nut really isn't good for them because they are indigestible.  They can trigger stuff like pancreatitis (if the dog is predisposed that way).  I had a pom/peke mix and just ONE PIECE would send her into a pancreatic attack and man, she loved them *sigh*.

Watch for vomiting/diarreha and particularly if it's bloody ... vet NOW.  Be very very careful in coming days not to give anything fatty.

If the dog just plain acts "not itself" ... that is honestly enough excuse to go to the vet and ASK for a blood panel broad enough to show amylase and lipase (the ratio of those two is often a big huge clue to pancreatitis).

In my experience (and I'm NOT a vet) pancreatitis would be your biggest risk here -- they aren't toxic.  Just undigestible.

Gotcha....and thanks for the quick and complete reply.

He's such a bugger.  Ever since he discovered the garbage we can't keep him out of it.  Usually we put up baby gates to keep him out, but she took a chance....and it backfired.

He also managed to get the cat food leftovers on the counter !  Man, wish I could have filmed that one.  I really don't know how he does it.  He's not that tall.....must be determination.  That and he's convinced he's starving at all time Confused

I'd be in serious trouble if he had her skillz then !!!  Generally, he's a good boy........but when it comes to food..all bet's are off that he's gonna keep his lips to himself Big Smile
