Yes our country is in a bad way right now - seventh circle of hell as Lani puts it -but how productive is this behavior?  He absolutely has a right to voice his concern but I think his concern is a little mis-placed.  To me, his display is a bit like a child throwing a temper-tantrum.  Instead of being part of a solution to our country's problems, he's choosing to stick his fingers in his ears and scream.

Maybe just a ploy for attention?

Sad dude...hope he is planning on leaving soon since it's so horrible now, in the place where he apparently owns a home, and can afford to maintain it and buy flags.

I agree with you, Amy.  The 2000 and 2004 elections didn't go the way a lot of us wanted it to either, but we muddled through it.  The '08 election made me feel like a lot of  the country is starting to come together and "Mr. Upsidedown Flag" needs to get with the program before the neighborhood parents have to start pointing out to their kids just how childish he's being.

i think this guy is a little exteme, but why should he have to "get onboard" with something he disagrees with? the democrats in washington and in the media have spent 8 yrs being partisan and demonizing W and republicans in general. now all that is supposed to be forgotten as we join hands and sing "kumbaya"?

    good luck.

I would care less if dude were in my neighborhood..he can jump ship anytime he likes publicly or otherwise.

Just so he knows I will be snickering about his childish behavior.

No one's an island and the things you choose to do reflect and resound thruout your community. If he needed a bit of water to put out flames on behind I'd get him some...but somehow with his attitude I have little doubt he'd actually appreciate it.

Oh good grief.  Words fail me.  Whenever I think this country (UK) is going to pot and it's time to emigrate, I see something like this and I think - maybe we haven't got it so bad after all.  Huh?

    • Gold Top Dog

Remind me, cyclefiend, because my memory is the pits - where was the 'armageddon scare' when Bush was elected?  In 2004 especially.  Seems to me that's the attitude so many people are taking.

I guess what gripes me the most about this particular case is he is doing this in the name of our country being in 'distress'.  Show me one person who disagrees. He says our country is more divided now than ever.  Wow, that's a bold statement coming from a history teacher.  He gets upset when the reporter probably mentioned it being a racial issue ("don't ever throw the race card at me";).  Yet if his worries are over the economic mess our US of A is in, where was his flag the past few years?  I know, I know, he's upset over the election of so many Democrats and what that will theoretically mean for our economy.  Does he fail to see what a lovely situation the out-going Republican government has left?  Cry over that spilt milk, go right ahead.  But it wasn't the doing of our in-coming government.

i have W blamed for almost everything in the news over the past 8 yrs. including a major hurricane.

the democrats have held the majority in congress for a few years now. so it is pretty short sighted to blame all the nation's problems solely on the republicans.

Ah, but you're making my point.  Just because Democrates are being elected doesn't mean it's game over.

"Silly" is the word that immediately came to mind when I read that article.  But I totally respect his right to free speech.

You sure didn't but so many people who were against Obama certainly are treating it as such.

For what it's worth, I didn't know there were so many Dems in Congress the past two terms.  Quite frankly I don't pay that much attention to politics because they frustrate me.  I vote, have voted, and will continue to vote.  I keep up with current issues.  And I think I did my homework when it came time to choose our new president.  But Congress kind of gets pushed to the side with me.  It shouldn't - their decision affect me on every level - but I put that in the hands of the leader I voted for.

     Gawd, I hate a sore loser....Wink

    • Gold Top Dog

And I will and have been the example of a gracious loser. I did vote for McCain/Palin. And didn't win other than our state. So be it. The will of the people, through the electoral college, have stated their opinion. The advantage of the electoral college is that it does allow greater voice for political minorities. The popular vote only differed by 3 to 4 percent. Anyway, I will, as I have always done, fly my flag on flag days. The very flag I rescued from a trash heap at a school I was remodeling in 1996. ( washed it a few times and sewed up a few tears.) And I will fly it on Inauguration Day, 2009. Right side up. We have a new president, elected by our system of government, fair and square. In other threads, I have mentioned media bias. But the numbers show that it didn't really have an effect. Granted, the man in the story has freedom of speech but, to me, flying the flag upside down is disrespectul. I support free speech but I condemn his action.

Fly the flag properly. Respect the presidency, even if you or I must disagree with him. The ideal of the flag and this country is more important to me than any one man.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the republic for which it stands. One nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

(side note of historical interest: "Under God" was not in the pledge until 1954.)

What is generally required, at least when I was brought up is a physical sign of honor. As a civilian, hand over the heart while reciting the pledge. When I was a boy scout and a sea explorer, we saluted.

Spoken like a true patriot.  And, however we disagree politically, it's nice to see that we're on the same page there.
