lymes disease and my dog!

    • Gold Top Dog
Even though our dogs have the frontline plus, after reading this I am going to do a very good tick check!!
I am so sorry for your dog!  Keep the faith, and try to hang in there!

Baby is tick free, (she had a bath a cut yesterday) But I found 2 on Rex, they seem to be dead though, from the frontline?  Anyway, it was good bonding time!

    How is Buster doing?
    • Gold Top Dog
I have worked with a few dogs that have tested postitive for lymn disease - and after treatment they have been just fine. I would not give up hope yet!
Keep us posted on how he is doing!

OH MY GOD IM SO HAPPY!
[color="#000000"][size="3"]i just got back from the vet and she said hes recovering and we could take him home! he seems to be acting 100% better!!! the vet says we must feed him this special food from now on for the rest of his life, and we must give him this 1 pill every day, we also have to give him these 4 other pills until they run out then where done with them. he seems to be acting like his good ole self!!!

the thing i didnt notice is that the symptoms dont start showing up till 7 months after infection, so that means it happend 7 months ago, my family thinks it was when buster and my little bro and my dad went for walks in the woods awhile ago without forntline on (which was stupid and me and my mom scolded them for it lol)

but the main thing is hes all better!! this is like the best thing thats happened to me in a long time and i cant weait for him to fully recover and go swimming again!!! the only thing is that it shortend his life span a little bit...but that just means i should cherish the time i have now even more![:D]

I am very glad that your dog is doing so much better.  Please tell us
    (1)  what the special food is
    (2)  what the daily pill is and the dosage
    (3)  what the other pills are and how many you have, so we can see when they run out.

Maybe we can give you some ideas on how to extend your dog's lifespan.

I am very, very happy for you that he is coming home!   [sm=dance.gif][sm=dance.gif][sm=dance.gif]

again,  I urge you to join the tick list -  [linkhttp://saluqi.home.netcom.com/ticklinks.htm]http://saluqi.home.netcom.com/ticklinks.htm[/link]    These people have been thru it and many times they recommend dosages higher than the vets recommend.  That's b/c they have found thru hard experience that a certain dosage can help prevent relapses later on.

Also, don't feel terrible bad about the frontline issue.  There are members on their that used frontline and still ended up with tick borne issues.

Next,  please don't wait to join the k9kidneydiet group at yahoo.  Get copies of any / all test results from your vet b/c they will want you to post information from there.  More importantly, they can help guide you diet wise with foods that may be (most likely will be) better than a prescription food.    This group deals with kidney issue dogs, and their are a number on their that have dogs with tick borne illnesses.  when you join, sign up for the digest format.

I am very happy for you, but please don't stop and rest now.  Please join these groups and learn all you can to be proactive in helping to keep him healthy as long as possible.

And, like Janet, I am curious about the pills  and also what test exactly that they did to determine it was Lymes and only Lymes.  I say this b/c there is another tick disease that get treated with something beside doxy.  I don't remember which was it is, but most tick diseases get 8 weeks of doxy at a higher than normal amount.  You will have to protect his stomach when doing this protocol.

So, mentioning only a few pills is confusing to me.  But, I'm not as knowledgeable as those on the tick list.  And, Janet, those were good questions!

Using Frontline is good, but you also need to examine a dog for ticks regularly (daily?).  Frontline will kill ticks, but does not repell them, so it also helps to use a repellent.  Some people put the repellent on a bandana or a vest.

Here are a few sites on natural flea & tick repellents:

NOTE: "natural" = herbs and essential Oils

Look at this site to see pictures of ticks.  Note the sizes.

Crazylikeafox, please read the post below to understand why I am asking about the medications.  I want to be sure that your vet is giving enough antibiotic and giving it for a long enough period of time.  Some vets are not aware of the newest recommendations for treating tick-borne diseases.
    [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/m.asp?m=331900&mpage=1&key=Doxycycline[/link]>http://forum.dog.com/asp/m.asp?m=331900&mpage=1&key=Doxycycline]http://forum.dog.com/asp/m.asp?m=331900&mpage=1&key=Doxycycline[/link]

About the dosage for the antibiotic doxycycline:
[font=verdana]This is twice the amount recommended in the Merck Veterinary Manual and is given for a longer period of time than the VMM recommends; however, vets who deal with tick disease all the time say that the higher doses and longer administration are successful far more often in treating this disease and preventing its recurrence.

I say this b/c there is another tick disease that get treated with something beside doxy.

I think you are referring to Babesiosis.

    [linkwww.minden.com/nowhereelse/canine_tick_disease.htm[/link]>http://www.minden.com/nowhereelse/canine_tick_disease.htm]www.minden.com/nowhereelse/canine_tick_disease.htm[/link]
[font=verdana]Imizol (Imidocarb diproprionate) is the drug of choice for Babesiosis and is used off-label for knocking out stubborn cases of Ehrlichiosis, as well.
