    lymes disease and my dog!

my pure breed 2 year old golden retriever has been acting strange for the paste couple of days, and this morning he wouldnt move and it looked like he was in pain, so my dad took him to an emergency vet visit, and now we found out that buster was bit by a deer tick and it gave him lymes disease! the vet says that his kidneys are already badly damaged and that she wont know if they can save him until after 3 days of treatment, the vet says that his outlook is grim!

he the best dog i ever had, and i have 1 other dog and in the past have had 3 other dogs, none bitten by ticks! but of course my best buddy gets bit by one, STUPID TICKS I HATE TICKS THERE DUMB ANIMALS!!!

my boss' Maltese also got Lyme Disease from a tick and he's fine. He has to go on an antibiotic now and then for maintenance but he's been fine for many years. He had it for awhile before it was diagnosed.

I am so, so sorry this has happened.

I encourage you to go ahead and join the tick list at:

    [linkhttp://saluqi.home.netcom.com/ticklinks.htm]http://saluqi.home.netcom.com/ticklinks.htm[/link]

These people are super smart and know the proper treatment protocols and how much doxy to give, etc.

I surely hope he makes it thru this acute stage.  At that point, I would also suggest you join the yahoo group  k9kidney.  They are an excellent group to help with nutrition and drugs.  I don't have that link right now to give you.

Again, I am sorry this happened and I so hope he makes it thru well.

I feel your anger. We have gajillions of wood ticks and deer ticks here too. Even with Frontline Rupert still gets bit.

Tell your furry buddy to stay strong! We're all hoping the best for him. [sm=crossfingers.gif]

Do you guys in tick areas check your dog over after being out in the woods?  We do have ticks and we're going on a two week vacation where last summer I found ticks on me twice!  Should I check Chopper over real good each day or is that being paranoid?

I don't think that is being paranoid at all.  I would be using Frontline Plus, a natural repellent, and checking the dog over daily.

Here are a couple of sites on natural flea & tick repellents:

THANK YOU Janet, oh queen of linkage! [:D]  I was JUST thinking to myself "I wonder if there is natural bug repellent for dogs..."  b/c I use a natural bug repellent and it works great, but obviously I can't just rub it on a dog.

Be extremely careful of essential oils around cats as they can kill.

If you have an epiletic dog, be careful as well - some may be triggers.

Also keep in mind that if you use essential oils, then don't saturate the dog with the smell.  Maybe put some on a bandana that is only used when walking, or only spritz the lower legs when going walking.

Dogs have a sense of smell so, so, so, so much stronger than ours - and for dogs, smelling essential oils can be hard on them if not careful used.

What's an "essential oil"?  My stuff has eucalyptus in it.  The cats avoid it like the plague b/c cats HATE anything with that citrusy smell, but if it's dangerous I can be sure to hide it really well!

    sorry for your loss[:(]

that's a bit weird. Kidney damage in dogs from lyme is really rare and usually only occurs after months of untreated infection-- did you notice the symptoms of lameness, soreness, lethargy?
