I had one. It was not great with doghair - very small "tank" for holding dirt, and filled up quickly. Also, in order for it to really work well there can't be a lot of obstructions on the floor - I basically found myself cleaning the house so I could let the Roomba go. Which you'd have to do anyway for a regular vacuum, but definitely detracts from the "turn it on and leave, come home to a clean house" appeal of the Roomba. It also was not great at cleaning into the corners, and occasionally scuffed up our baseboards when it bumped into them and tried to turn.
Ours was an older model, so maybe they've fixed the problems, but we ended up scrapping ours (which we got second hand) and getting a traditional vac instead.
