    AND OBAMA WINS!

What a beautiful speach... I feel more inspired and hopeful than I've felt for a long time!  I am so excited to see what happens tomorrow... and in February and for the next 4 years!

    Whee!!!

    • Gold Top Dog

    Agreed.

I do have to say I was very impressed with McCain's speach as well.  Had we, as a nation, seen THAT John McCain during the campaigne, it might have been a much tighter race.

    • Gold Top Dog

McCain was very gracious, his speech impressed me. I wish I'd seen more of that side of him...it was nice. I wish him well.

Funny I feel more pessimistic and unhopeful than ever. I am looking forward to giving my hard earned money away, simply because I am white and make more than minimum wage. I am looking forward to losing my right to bear arms. I am looking forward to the corporations paying more in taxes and in turn raising the prices on the American public. I am looking forward to all the military cutbacks, which will cause the large percentage of American companies that rely on for contracts to lay off millions of jobs and people with families who will now get to work at Walmart for chump change. Gosh its gonna be a great 4 years!

oh that is just ridiculous.  absolutely ridiculous...... (referring to above post)
    • Gold Top Dog

Absolutely, I thought it was well done, too Gina.  I agree with you, too, Glenda.... that was a side I had not seen.  I've always respected McCain for his tremendous courage and commitment to our country.

    I hope you're right. But we'll see, won't we.
    • Gold Top Dog

I too thought they both gave wonderful, heartfelt speeches and they both showed a lot of grace and dignity.  I don't think McCain was really all that hopeful.  I think he knew that because Dubya was such a fool, it was going to be a very difficult election for a republican candidate. I'm watching TV now and they're showing pickets outside the White House carrying signs  that read "Why wait? Evict Bush now."

I really hope he can do some good. Emphasis on hope. But now I'm just dreading going to class tomorrow.

I THINK WE ARE IN FOR A HARD TIME.

... we are IN for a hardtime?  Welcome to the 7th circle of hell that we've been in for the last several years.

I say "YES WE CAN!"  it is what YOU make of it.  So make it great.... the majority has spoken.

    • Gold Top Dog

I felt like Obama's speech was insincere- just saying the words that people want to hear... That's just my opinion, which I do have a right to! I'm really concerned about how things are going to go now. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

    • Gold Top Dog

Not wanting to start anything, but could someone please explain to me just what it is about Obama that has so many people terrified?  I was  talking to my (conservative Republican) friend on the phone tonight and I think she's preparing for armageddon. I'd just really like to understand where all this fear is coming from and exactly what it is people are so  afraid of.

Not to pick on you as I think we have simular health issues... but the qoute from your post really is the crux of the problem I see with folks who knee jerk voted for McCain.  IF you have access to private health care dropping it is just silly .I am reasonably sure you were being facetious and not sincere. The health care being offered is far superior to being ill and in pain but it is not the quality of care that privately insured people take for granted. Picking your own doctors and not having to have endless rules about every referral or request for additional treatment. Obama did not promise a system that will pay for boob jobs or elective proceadures. The promise was made to cover the millions with ZERO health care.  People like day laborers who struggle to pay rent but put in 10 hour days, or fast food and retail workers who simply can not afford to spend a 1/3 of an already small paycheck on insurance . Especially since they can not afford a sick day to see a doctor , missing a full day of work is the difference for these folks between making rent and having insurance on the old car they may be lucky enough to own. People with large familes who have children unable to be a kid, play sports etc because they fall in the crack for income amounts. Grandparents who are raising grandchildren and families who have taken in an older relative. My brother recently had cancer surgery. He is too young for medicare and as a kennel manager does not make enough to pay for a private health policy. The monies for his care came from his savings, his employer and my family who had little to spare but lose a brother because he was broke?  Not happening.

I have  single scripts that cost over 400.00 a month and I am on a large number of meds. I had to choose which ones actually improve the qaulity of my life over the ones that just made me feel better.

This was a harsh wake up call since we had always had the best health insurance and care. When the Bush Administration approved the outsourcing of areospace jobs my husband survived the first 16 lay offs.  Then he was offered early and limited retirement from a job he had been on for over 33 years, because they could hire two kids out of school for less than what he was paid. A Harsh new world indeed.... Great way to pay back a vet who had never taken any type of hand out in his life and had with me kept both of our mothers and several other family members off of welfare and out of the system. What a relief when he qualified for Medicare ! Not even close to the health care we had always known but a darn site better than not being able to go to a doctor at all!

And what happens if you do get to qualify for health care and save some of your husband;s hard earned money?? "Taking a cruise" is an irresponsible metaphor even. What happened to saving money to invest in your future and cushion yourself from harder times?  This wa snever promised to be a windfall. but sadly that is the thinking that has gotten our country into trouble to start with.  The USA never promised anyone a vacation opportunity. It promised us a place to live, raise our families and enjoy more freedoms than pretty much anywhere else in the world. The perks are supposed to be earned and saved for.

And if you had ever listened to or read the tax breaks promised and the new taxes that are likely , you would realize that you most likely will reap the benfits of them! It is the middle class that is to get a break , not rich people with great tax lawyers who pay pennies on the dollar compared to the amounts that are heaped on your head and mine.  The emphasis is on the working class for the first time in a very long time. Obama realizes that families like the one in which he was raised really are the back bone of America.  Why do you think the current administration gave out stimulus checks? Rich people did not stop spending, they did not create the trickle down that made our economy such a scary place. We, the working class folks had to cut back. When was the last time you were behind a limo or a benz in the KFC Drive thru? ..but then when was the last time you could afford to buy KFC? I have 10 people in my family , including a 9 year old who has to have a tapeworm, this kid can EAT! and he is Skinney as a proverbial bean pole. To feed my family a dinner at KFC it cost me a minimum of 85.00 , no desserts, just chicken and a couple of sides ! When you can not afford to eat out there are lay offs or closings in the restaurant industry.  so now there are more people barely making it trying to work two jobs just to make rent.  They are not doing starbucks, blockbusters or manies and pedies... they are just tryong to keep the phone on!

Rich folks who would not take the time to chat with you got excited about the ding their bank accounts would be taking and they hired firms to make sure the country would panic over yet more taxes, never mind they would not be affecting most of us.  They trust that as tired and busy as we all are trying to make ends meet we would get piffy over trigger words like Taxes and Gun Control .... it is not their kids dying in drive bys. and it is not their homes with high tech alarms being broken into... but they can trust us to reject anything that is going to help the even poorer folks or as they like to put it "bums" because this is human nature. Rich folks know a great deal about human nature.  This is how they made and kept their money.

The simple truth is McCain never had to do anything more than make the same promises to the same controlling interests, and the apple cart would never have to be upset. No one voting for him was voting for change. They were simply voting for staus qou hoping that this time they would do a bit better or at the least not lose anything else.

Obama HAS to prove something. He is not simply the first Bi Racial American in office, he is also young and from the life that he wants to protect and it is a darn site closer to our lives than any one else has been. He has motivation to make his changes work, since the magnifying glasses will be one everything he does and says.  This is plainly a much more sucess orientated place to start from .

One last note, many of you are not old enough to remember "Camelot", of course there were many things wrong with the administration and it's players BUT it was the first time that the youth of America were both challenged and inspired to make a difference.  They were included in the concept that the future was indeed theirs and it wa sup to them to choose what they would leave for the next generation.

Obama holds out the promise of an untapped resource finally understanding they must get involved , they must make a change if they want the country to be a better place. Sadly McCain was unable to bring that inspiration to the table. He was just another old white guy who could not remember how many houses he owned....

Congratulations to all of you who supported Obama - and the Dems who made such a huge gain across the country as well.  It was truly marvelous, if nothing else, to see the excitement and smiles at the polls!  And at last, at last, we've proven that truly anyone can be President.  Next time around - girl power!  Big Smile

Sandra and Jenn - there, there, it will be okay.  One administration doth not a culture change make.  What usually (I mean, almost unfailingly) happens in this situation - change of power at the top and a large majority in the Congress - the powers that be get giddy, make assumptions about what Americans want, and make their constituents mad.  And in two years, the power turns over to the opposition.  It's one of the beautiful mechanisms that keeps our system from sudden moves in any radical direction.

The fear that Conservatives have is that leftists have never been in such a convenient position to make substantial changes and grow government in a way we've never seen.

What we hear from people like Chuck Schumer scares us, that free speech doesn't apply to pornography, and therefore shouldn't apply to "unbalanced" public airing of opnion as in, talk radio and internet blogs.

We feel uneasy when we hear Congressional leadership (including our new Vice-elect) say it's time for us to let go of the  outdated notion that if we acrue wealth, that we should be able to keep it.

We feel uneasy when we hear Obama say that it's a shame the Bill of Rights and the civil rights movement focused too much on human rights, and not on economic justice and classless society.

The Republicans are done.  They have shown their utter ineffectiveness as a party the last twelve or so years.  Really, for many years they have been "Democrat lite" and they neutered themselves on many occasions when they could have taken the leadership.

I'm switching my party affiliation and getting more involved at the grassroots.  Take the test and see whether you, as a Republican, really belong more with the Libertarians!

Go Ron Paul - 2012!  I love this country!!!!!
