Nicknames for Grandparents

    Nicknames for Grandparents

We are trying to decide on nicknames for grandparent's.  In my family, we all have really original nicknames to begin with so I would love to come up with something different for my parent's.  I know there are plenty of parent's with kids as well as some grandparent's on here.  What are some of your favorites and what do your kids use?  I am trying to keep them simple enough that a baby will learn it but also somewhat original.  Thought is might be fun to share some of our names!

Growing up I called my grandmother and grandaddy....not at all original and I am stearing clear of the ones that are so obvious!

Some of my favorites so far are Gigia, Baba (for either), Pappi....

oh gosh most cute ones come about because you let the child pick LOL. So I say wait and see what your baby wants to call them Wink

    Ours are just Grandpa/Grandma/Nana

I was "Peanut" for the longest time when my niece was having trouble with my name. I liked it...wish she's still call me that LOL.

In my family, it was always Grammy and Grampy, but in my husband's family it was Memere and Pepere...that is French (officially, it should be Grandmemere and Grandpepere, but we used that for great grandparents).

So when my kids had kids, I wanted to be Gram and he wanted to be Pepere...weird combination!

I have a Mema and a PaPa. And then PaPa(yes, 2 Papa's) and a Grandma, and another Grandma. Don't you just love devorced/re-married families?! LOL!

MeMa is probably my favorite grandparent name....my Mom goes by NaNa and my dad by PaPa

OT - my cusion called my Mom 'Aunt Big Bird'. 'cuz back in the late 80's my Mom had a yellow sweat suit(*dies*), and my cusion was like 2 or 3 and a HUGE Seaseme St. fan - Mom wore the sweat suit to visit one day and was greeted by a little girl screaming 'BIG BIRD!!"

She's in her 20's now and still call's my Mom 'Aunt Big Bird'

My niece calls my mother Gamma......my father now is called.....Peachfuzz.

Long story, very long story, but she will be 16 in February and she still calls him Peachfuzz and so do the rest of us..in fact, I even have that in my phone to call him.

Sigh...he calls her Zilla......and she responds!

Granddad/Grandma Last Name and Grandpa/Grandma Last Name for me.  Do keep in mind how hard it is to find cards for granparents with different "names" - when I was younger it always bummed me out when I only found 1 or 2 Granddad cards each holiday when I was trying to find a card for him.

On my mom's side it was Grandma and Pap (and his mom was Grandma Bowman, her mom was Grandma Divore) and on my dad's side it was Pappy Lee and MawMaw Pearl

My friend's great grandmother is GG, which I think is pronounced Gee Gee.

I had a grandma Jewel, a grandma Jean and a mimi plus two papas and a grandpa Roy.  My mom called her grandma 'gonga;'  I get a kick out of that.  And another funny one, from Arrested Development: Gangie.

Beware of "cutsie" and "original" -- because elsewhere (and to other CHILDREN who can be brutal) -- I think the unsual names (other than the ethnically based ones) tend to be Southern - I can remember when I first moved down here and heard "Mam-maw" and "Pap-paw" for the first time I giggled to myself but said nothing until I heard kids calling each other "hillbilly" and other less kind things.  There comes a point for a kid when baby names become just that and if *I* were the Grandparent I wouldn't ever want my grandchildren uncomfortable when talking about me -- just my thot.

when I grew up the difference was less subtle but no less important.  My Mom's parents were "Gramma" and "Grampa" -- my Dad's parents  were "Gram" and "Gramp".  The latter being a little less warm only in my mind.

My Mom's folks were wonderful to me and a huge influence on me -- it was Grampa who taught me to love animals, and ... well, many of you have heard me say "My Grandma always said any huge problem you have looks a little more manageable if you sit down to a cup of hot tea in a *pretty* cup and relax for a minute."  Yep -- that was her.

My Dad's folks?  In my whole life I was only upstairs in their house ONE TIME.  In the barn? Yes.  In the living room ... yes.  but I was never invited to stay the night and I never got to go up where the family 'lived'.  Somehow there was a world of difference to *me* in that "a" on the end of Gramma and Grampa .... *sigh*

My French-Canadian MIL had always wanted to be called MeMere but none of the 10 grandkids preceding my 2 ever called her that, so it was my gift to her, she was so happy.  I've already let my kids know that although there's no French in my heritage, I expect to be MeMere to any grandkids that come along.

My SIL is "GoGo" to several of her grandkids because they grew up only hearing "Go get this" "Go over there" "Go get your mother", etc.  I think it's so cute!

A girl I grew up with has a three year old girl and she calls her grandpa Papa and her grandma Meema.  She also calls her aunt Lala because she can't pronounce her first name.

My mom was the opposite, we called Grandmas "grammas" and Grandpas "grampas".  Us kids thought up nicknames but my mom wouldn't let us use them.  She said they sounded whiney and were disrespectful.

I like poppy, but i can't help thinking of seinfeld...lol. I would always be thinking, "Poppy peed on the couch!"

When i was little, i called everyone, including my parents, by their first name. So it stuck. I have a Granny Linnie, Granny Mac, Pepaw Bill, and a papa John. However, my cousins call G Mac, Nana...

I love some of the names people use on here!  I appreciate all of the words of warning and of course I would let the grandparents have the final say...and like you said, the kids will end up being the ones with the final say.  My parent's have always come up with very original nicknames for us and most of our family, so the unusual factor isn't something that will be offensive to either of them.  My mother in law I will just have her tell me what she wants to be named, plus, she already has other grandkids.  On my parent's I am just coming up with some ideas to throw out there that they may not have thought of.

Either way, they will have the final say, I am just taking the opportunity to give them a special nickname since they have blessed us with them all of our lives.  Most people don't even know me by my real name Sarah, but by my nickname Boney Jean!  My mother is Woodie, my brother is Sticks or Edvit McFuzzy, my dad is Cinco, Clank, Gonkey, my aunt is Bird and so on.  It is more just a way to carry on the tradition of unusual names...

It is also fun to hear what other people call their grandparents!
