Halloween Candy Recall (yes, made in China)

    Yay. Confused
    HALLOWEEN CANDY RECALLED

There is a new warning put out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency...
Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate coins are being recalled due to
the fact that they contain Melamine, the ingredient in milk product that
has  caused many infant (and dog) deaths in China. These candies are
sold at Costco, as well as many bulk and dollar stores. please make sure
to check your childrens halloween candy and DO NOT LET THEM  EAT THE PIRATE
COINS (you know the ones wrapped in the shiny gold foil)  and please let
    other parents know about this!

(you can verify this on snopes:  http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/coins.asp )

I was going to post something today about being careful about what candy you buy , but thought it may be too late by the time I actually heard about the dangers.  Sheesh, my kids are grown...but now you not only have to watch for razors, but for Chinese candy.  And that one is a tough call...  Even the safe places such as malls and churches and well-meaning friends can be giving this stuff out.

Geez.  I kind of miss the good old days when I was a kid .... people actually made Halloween treats (popcorn balls, fudge, candy apples, etc.) and nobody had to worry about razors or getting poisoned. Sad

I'm with you Joyce.  I loved to get popcorn balls, caramel and candy apples, little bags of homemade caramel corn, and yes, the fudge.  Even the folks who didn't like Halloween would put a bushel of apples on their porch....no one's fav....but never have more than one taken per child, and none tossed at the house cuz we were ticked.....

Yes to the candy apples, popcorn balls and all of those wonderful treats we used to get and hand out.  Can you imagine what would happen if we passed out anything homemade tonight to stranger's children!  I might just make some popcorn balls tonight and enjoy them for ourselves and the neighbor's kids who come by.

The more recalls I hear about food tainted from China the more angry I get. After finding out that my motts apple juice has concentrates from China, I have been more diligent about reading labels. Seriously it only takes one person to not do their job thoroughly to poison us. I'm not sure about you, but I'm not putting my faith in people not making mistakes. Even the best, most diligent person has a bad day.
