    Flying

I am sure there are plnty of post on this subject but I can't really find one that answers all my questions.

I am flying back home (Portland, OR) mid-march of next year for about a week. I am seriously considering taking Lex with me. I got him as a pup in Washington and think it will be really cool for everyone to see him again. Plus my mom just got a new puppy and it would be fun for him. Anyways, what is all involved in this process? I have never flown on a plane with my pet before. Lex is about 55 pounds so I would have to check him as cargo right? Also what is the price range, does it vary by airline? And if I was getting a round trip ticket could he get one too or would I have to buy two one-way tickets.

Also any links would be greatly appreciated. I know we have some link masters on hereCool

It varies a great deal airline to airline.  The problem flying them in cargo is the outside air temp.  There are places in March where it's still freezing and below zero that high in the air BUT at the same time, there are also places where it's HOT by then (like Florida or Texas).

Certain airlines just plain WON'T fly a dog cargo if the temperature is over 80.  And to have them in the cabin with you they have to fit in a carrier that stows under the seat (which would be pretty impossible for a 50 pound dog probably).

So... it limits your options.  You'll have to talk to the airline -- and don't think you're going to get to walk him if you have to change planes.  You won't.  That's why it gets so dicey.  If you have a 'good time of year' to do it, March would be close to perfect because it's not terribly cold nor terribly hot in Oklahoma NOR Oregon.  But it's also unpredictable

LOL, that carrier under the seat thing is next to impossible for a 20 lb dog! Emma hardly fits. I flew Delta, with her, and she had a reservation for both flights, but I had to pay at the counter both ways. It was $75 for her to ride in the cabin, with me. She did extremely well. I did not get to walk her, either, BUT part of that is my navigation impairment. The Atlanta airport is huge. My layover was plenty long enough to get her out, BUT I was scared to death that I'd miss my flight if I tried to find a pee pee area.

Can't help with current prices, but I have a Word document on flying with dogs that I made a while back.  Email me and I will send you a copy.

Thankyou for all the feedback. I read more about it after I wrote this and realized it is just probably better for him to just stay home with DH.Tongue Tied

But I will miss him so much! Crying
