Migraines....

    Migraines....

I've always had headaches, they ranged from tolerable to pure h***. I used to take Motrin, Tylonal, Advile, ect. None of that works anymore, and my headaches are constant. They never go away completely, but they do lesson depending on lighting, noise level, stress level, and hormones. But they didn't start all this until about 2 months ago when I started The Pill. The first set I tryed didn't work, this second(different type) seems to be working so far. In the past month I've been feeling sick to my stomach, along with the severe headaches, and dizziness...the dizziness has made me come close to passing out a few times a week, but normally just throw me off balance and then I'm fine, or my vesion goes black and then comes back within a few seconds. I told my Doc last month when I went in for a visit, but the headaches weren't as bad then, and she told me dizziness was to broad to tell me what was wrong. She tested me for diabetes and thyroid issues, both came back, I don't have either.

So, basicly, I'm asking if anyone knows what could work other then perscriptions....I hate to feel like I **need** a drug, weather I actually need it or not. I do go back to the Doc in the mourning, but I really don't want to ask for another perscription, especially a heavy-weight pain-killer.

Ahh migraines.. I know thee well. Smile I had the same problem when I started on Yasmin 28. My headaches got worse, I got sick to my stomach and my balance was crap. After many trail and errors, I'm now on the Depo Shot. It's helped ALOT with my headaches and all the other problems I've had. It also helps with blood pressure.

Also talk to your Dr about Maxalt. It's a migraine medication in the form of a wafer. It just goes under your tongue and melts away. That also helped with my migraines and I've been battling them since I was 13 (I'm 23 now). The Pill increased the pain and made it so I couldn't move for a couple days.  Now that I'm on the Shot 1) I don't have to remember to take a pill every day Stick out tongue 2) My hormones are sorted out.

You're still a teenager right? Then it could be the hormones. Again worth talking to the Dr about. Good luck!

I understand the whole, me being a teen still and all that...I'm terrified of shots thou....litterally, I nearly punched the women who gave me the shot. This pill is working well on my other issues, but the balance and migraines are horrible....I was hoping to go with something natural or over-the-counter. I'm going to bring it up tomarrow..

I hate needles with a passion but the only thing that gets me to the doctor every 3 months was I kept forgetting to take the Pill and becoming preggo right now is not an option for me.  My Dr uses an insulin needle for me so I don't feel a thing. Smile

Maybe Callie will have something that will help the migraines but I don't think they'll completely vanish until you find the B.C for you.

    • Gold Top Dog

Callie always has wounderful advice! I agree thou, until I find the right one for me, non of this will stop.

Ok -- first you understand that not all headaches are migraines?  Migraines are a specific TYPE of headache -- in the temples and they *pound* thump thump thump.  Yes they can affect your vision and make you sick to your stomach (but then if you puke you just know your head will explode .... *sigh*)

Migraines and your cycle can have a huge huge correllation and make sure the doctor is aware of what type of headache it is.  Some birth control isn't good to take with migraines because it greatly increases your risk of stroke (yeah, even at your age).

Have you had your eyes tested?  Recently?

You aren't going to like this -- migraines are almost always triggered by SOMETHING.  You can virtually elminate migraines if you are willing to keep a food diary and stop doing and eating certain things to see if they *are* triggering them --

This isn't an exhaustive list at all -- but it's a darned good start:

    1.  Caffeine (coffee, coke, pepsi, tea of any kind except herbal, CHOCOLATE)

    2.  Red meat

    3.  Red wine

    4.  BIGGIE -- aspartame and most known low-cal sweeteners.  Nutra-sweet is probably THE biggest trigger of a migraine for me

    5.  sugar (yep, this is no fun)

    6.  artificial flavors, preservatives and chemicals in general

    7.  some spices and flavorings like chili pepper type of stuff particularly

    8.  pretty much anything you, individually are sensitive to.

    9. Nicotine

The deal is you keep a diary of everything that goes in your mouth -- AND you keep track of the headaches -- when they worsen, come, go, change, etc.  And then you look at what you consumed in the last 48 hours.

Most of these things have something to do with how big/small bloodvessels get - the rapid expansion/contraction of blood vessels is what happens in migraines (the pounding) -- so for example caffeine is a stimulant and it will cause the blood vessels to fluctuate -- hence it makes a migraine.

However, it can also hasten things like aspirin and other nsaids to work so it *seems* to help but overall it is a HUGE trigger of migraines

Spicey food -- things like chili pepper will cause your blood pressure to increase (yeah -- you just knew I was gonna be full of all kinds of good stuff here right?? sorry!) which will worsen a migraine.

You're gonna hate me -- but try not drinking ANY pop/soda at all for 2 weeks and see how your headaches are.  And don't just substitute pop for Iced tea with sugar or sweetner either.

Going off caffeine (it is hugely addictive and you don't even know you ARE addicted) will, in itself, give you a headache.

But detoxing from caffeine and sugar can literally give you a whole different outlook -- it's not really going to help you to take an herb to be 'natural' if you are drinking diet pop and coffee, etc. at the same time.  You'll be causing them faster than you can get rid of them.

    Ok -- helps?

Oranges, I just sent you the arthritis stuff and a whole lot of what helps that helps headaches.  The essential oils help enormously -- my favorite is White Flower Oil or a superior peppermint oil for a headache.

They will help both a sinus headache (generally right above your eyebrows across the front of your head) or a migraine (temples -- one or both sides, radiating down and around your head -- or a headache that encircles your head and 'thumps';)

There are other headaches aplenty - stress, tension (different -- often neck-related), clusters, etc.

But a dot of an oil that is an anti-inflammatory (peppermint, wintergreen, eucalyptus or many blends) that is massaged into the temple or where it is strongest will help relieve it.

IF you can catch a migraine during the 'aura' stage (the stage just preceding it -- the symptoms aren't fully developed but you can tell it's 'coming on';) usually the essential oils will help kick it before it starts.

Getting away from the computer, going to a dark, quiet room and lying down with your eyes closed will also help stop it before it's bad.

Pressure points -- I can tell you the two *I* use.

Not at all -- but it can be a tad awkward sometimes to try to explain to someone how to stick their finger in their mouth *grin* (seriously folks - if, when you have a headache, you take the tip of your index finger and rub HARD the side of your roof of your mouth that the headache is on -- one side or the other of the ridge of your mouth.  VERY hard and slowly - usually I do front to back)

And the thing I find extremely interesting is -- if you ever do this when your head does *not* ache it's kind of a non-event.  BUT when you do this when your head *does* ache -- rubbing that pressure point hurts like the very devil.  BUT it will relieve the headache in a big huge way.  Even a migraine.

I have no clue 'why' it hurts one time and not the other, but I suspect a fluid collects in the roof of your mouth when there is pain present and I always think of it as pushing that fluid away.

I went back to college when I was 30 and often had to attend services and things where I just couldn't get up and go get water, etc.  I think that pressure point was the only way I survived because being in what amounted to as 'stressful situations' often GAVE me the darned headache.

It's a powerful pressure point tho.

The other one is between your thumb and index finger in the meat of your hand down almost to the "V" of the joint between your thumb and index finger.

Take the thumb and index finger of one hand and pinch in that 'v' of the other hand - bury your thumb JUST as deep as you can and just as HARD as you can.  This will hurt so bad you feel like you're gonna crumble - but when you release it the headache is better.

NOTE:  If your headaches are this constant and this bad, you **Must** get the doctor to address them -- no joke.  Headaches like this are dangerous -- and you're too young for a stroke or such.

Be aware: Very often things like headaches are cumulative.  There isn't one thing causing them.  Stress + the wrong chemicals + eye strain + not enough sleep + too long at the computer ... etc.  One of those things might not cause the headache -- 2 might cause one that you can medicate -- but things piled on each other plus the wrong diet and the wrong drinks/chemicals/etc -- and it can be an insurmountable force.

Many years ago I was having a lot of headaches and was feeling really jittery generally.  The headaches that wouldn't stop scared me and I went to the doctor.

His first queston?  How much coffee do you drink?  I laughed -- at the time I was working in a factory and when I'd go in at 4:30 a.m. the morning crew would each buy me a cup of coffee so I'd have like 8 cups waiting at my window -- I'd drink every one of them before they were cold!

Yep I got LOTS done -- FAST.  but I couldn't slow down enough TO sleep and I was broke so I was living on diet pop and salad.

He took me off the caffeine first.  I had the WORST headache I've ever had -- it took me 2 weeks to  get thru the withdrawal.

Now?  I can't drink caffeine past about 2 p.m. if I want to sleep at night.  And I've grown rather fond of being ABLE to sleep.

And I also like being without a headache!

I got that arthitis thing, I'm gonna read it tonight..Smile

What I find funny, is the list you posted Callie, I did without even thinking. Embarrassed Cuz I've had headaches, migraines, and sinus headaches since I was 13, I learned what made the pain come, and what made it leave. So now I don't have any caffine except for one cup of tea in the morning (sometimes) and I drink all herbal stuff.  I've pretty much done that entire list. Big Smile except for red meat.. I need my meat! Lol.

I don't drink wine...or anything alcohol for that matter. I do drink Crystal Light like crazy. I don't do spicey food offten. And, I quit smoking about 4 months ago(I know...bad!!!).

Sinus headaches I am no stranger too! I have atleast 2 sinus infections a year.

The tension headaches come up my neck, and up the back of my head. Those I can't ever get rid of.

Right now I wish I had some peppermint oils, I want to turn my light out, and finish this, but I know the light from the computer will make it worse, but until I finish, I'd dealing with it.....

    calliecritturs

Getting away from the computer, going to a dark, quiet room and lying down with your eyes closed will also help stop it before it's bad.

I try that, but it's not possible in the middle of the day, at the office. And, I normally go to sleep. Stick out tongue

I had my eyes done is March, I think, got new glasses. I do drink a Mt. Dew or something similar in the mourning, and then a Sweet Tea at luch(about noon). I do have 'insomnia' and have meds for that, but when I take them, it does nothing for the headaches/migraines, I just go to sleep in misery. I'm going to bring it up tomarrow, and find some peppermint oil...

I have migraines terribly.  I've been out for months on disability because of them.  I could not take BC because there was nothing that didn't trigger my migraines.  Good luck sorting that one out, I just can not take ANY hormones, that's part of the reason I kept my ovaries when I had my hysterectomy.  I have never been able to take the regular migraine preventative meds, they just don't work for me.  What has worked is seizure meds, weird but according to the neurologist, some migraines follow the same pattern and affect the same areas of the brain, so that's what worked for me.  I just quit them recently because I was retaining water, constantly angry and depressed ( one of the side effects) and was still getting migraines.  I switched to a combo of supplements I read about on a migraine website.  I take Feverfew, Magnesium and a B complex.  You have to start with a minimum dosage (one tablet of each) and then work to a level where you see relief.  It has worked great for me this time.  Unfortunately, when I get a spell of them, I never know which approach will work, so I have to try everything until I find the magic bullet.  Also, review everything you're eating.  For me Nutrasweet (aspartame) is a terrible trigger and I discovered it was in a yogurt I was eating daily, so now I scrutinize labels very carefully.

Good luck, they can be such a terrible thing to deal with! Here's some websites that might help.

I don't want to scare you, but just make sure you really really talk to your doctor about it.  My friend has had terrible awful headaches constantly and she went to her doctor, who sent her toa specialist who told her that her brain is swelling and creating this pressure.  They sent her for a CT scan, and found nothing abnormal in her brain, but now she needs to have a spinal tap done, of which I don't think she has gone for that yet (she only found the results on Monday)

But it is good to get this looked at, especially if you are near to, or are fainting.  It happened to my mother's friend, and she got the worst case scenario, a brain tumour that she will need a 3rd operation on, and then they can't operate anymore on her.

    Be careful!

And also, you might want to read up on the depo shot, my doctor refused to give it to me, because it is one of the causes of osteoporsis.

Consider going to an ENT ( Ears Nose and Throat Doc)  I have had migraines since last November and I am on a very high dose pain management drug program.  So additional pain killers were not the answer. I did Physical Therapy  and that was a bust , some days like you I was only comforted by a dark room, silence and moist heating pads.  Then after a CAT scan they found a cyst on the Sinus wall at the back of my nose. so I was sent to an ENT to have him remove it. The exam showed I also had a break in the septum ( Deviated Septum) most likely caused by a bump in the nose from one of my dog's hard heads.  The doctor told me that these minor breaks that do not even change the appaearance of your nose can cause Migraines ! So while he was removing the cyst I had him fix the Breaks , after the surgery aside from having a very stuffed up nose the absence of Migraines was the most obvious !!  I am two weeks post surgery and have not had a headache . I could be doing Back flips except my nose is still very sore  Nose     I had my follow up appointment yesterday and I can now blow my nose again Blowing Nose !

If you rule out a deviated septum it may narrow down what the doctors should look at .  Best of Luck and Feel Better Soon!

Hey guys, thanks for the advice! I just got in from my Doc, she told me that seeing as the headaches/migraines only started in the past month, it was more then likely my BC, so, I'm starting another kind.....3rd times the charm? She also told me sense I work out a few days a week, I should drink electrolites and plenty of water....I was doing that for the dizziness but have been slacking lately....So, I'm uping the water and electrolites, starting the new BC, and trying to sleep more.

Bonita of Bwana....I have a deviated septum, mainly from falling out of trees quit a bit - years ago, I don't think it's that, due to the fact that none of this started until I started BC.

I was just going to say it was your pill. I had the same thing happen to me on Jasmine or whatever that one is called, and I hadn't had them for years. Glad you found a fix. Also, my Dr. prescribed a secondary pill for me to take if I ever got them again when it was related to my BCP. That may be a good back up for you to have on hand.

I typically wake up with a migraine.  From the Rx standpoint, I get the best results from Maxalt.

I have found stress management and guarded sleep time to be as important as diet.  I current use  exercise (Curves) and accupunture to address some of the stress.  Also  food allergy tests indicated wheat, egg whites, malt, barley and chocolate.  Well I didnt give up chocolate but I have cut down....Switched to wheat and gluten free things are getting better (the upper respiratory stuff is even coming under control with fewer meds)

Misstrouble try cutting out the Crystal Light.  I know it's EASIER to switch birth control, but trust me, the aspartame is doing you no good thing.
