Dog Park w/Neighbor & Her Dogs

My neighbor has two dogs, a mix of what appears to be pit /lab and other???? The smaller dog looks like a Cav KC mix. Both are rescues that she has had since they were pups last year. In the beginning they were wild, particularly the larger dog. She has worked with walking them and uses a Gentle Leader with the larger dog, however, they are still not very socialized, although sweet, they get pretty overexcited when encountering others and she, in turn, stresses out and curses them.

Through conversation she knows that I sometimes take my girls to a local dog park. We hadn't been in a while because some idiot supposedly put anti-freeze in the water and a couple of dogs died and others were ill. (Even though I take my own water and never let them drink from the public water - we stayed away.) In the last couple of weeks, we've gone twice and I mentioned it to my neighbor. She has never been and wants to go with us tomorrow night. I said okay without really giving it much consideration. I think it would be great for her dogs. I do, however, have concerns and they are:

    - She has a big dog and a little dog. Do they both go on the little dog side????? I will not take mine on the big dog side, only because the area is just too large and my dogs take off in opposite directions and I can't keep track of them.

    - I don't know that she will be able to handle both of her dogs at the same time. It may or may not be an issue, but I'm wondering if she shouldn't take one at a time????? I can help to a certain extent. Abbie will take of and play fine on her own, but the last couple of times we went, Layla was really overwhelmed. She just sat near me and wouldn't play. She normally loves other dogs and people and used to play like crazy at the park, but not anymore. So I will be focused on her to a certain extent and if her dogs prove to be a handful, I don't know how much I can help. Plus, her dogs don't really know me other than passing by during walks now and then. Also, we will be going at a very busy time - dusk.

    - If I'm going to the park I want to take both of my dogs. Neither one of them does well being left behind, so that's not an option. Nor will I go to the dog park and leave both of them at home, that doesn't make sense to me, although I do want to help my neighbor.

    Any thoughts??

I would recommend that she only take one dog at a time.  Explain to her that, since neither of her dogs  are dog park "regulars" that it would probably be best if she started out taking only one.  That way, if the dog does get overwhelmed, she will be able to focus all of her attention on just that one dog, instead of having to struggle to keep up with both dogs.

I think that, as long as you explain why you think that taking only one dog would be wise, she will totally understand.

Two under socialized dogs, taken during the height of busy hour, for their and their owners first time, sounds like a formula for trouble to me.  I would talk to her about rethinking the time she is going.  It would be better for her to swing by during the off hours and I would only have her take one dog at a time till she can assess how they will do.  She will also then be able to decide if it is safe to run them on the same side.

I would also double check to make sure she has already tested her dogs off leads with new unknown dogs before.  The dog park isn't the best place to find out your dogs don't get along with strangers that well.

CAN a person even run a big dog on the small dog side...same owner or not? I mean that seems to defeat the purpose LOL.

Maybe there's an out? "since there's a small dog side you will need to keep your little dog on the big dog side and she might not like that since it's her first time. I will be on the small dog side. Maybe you could just bring one dog this first time?"

eta: chuckling over imagining Cleo and Ellie at a divided park together LOL. Cleo on the small dog side...she'd think it was heaven...every dog there fits into her mouth LOL. No, she isn't aggro just likes to SLOOOBBERR all over heads...LOL.

People aren't really suppose to but they do sometimes.  XP

The other day at one park owners of a little Chihuahua and Great Dane visited both sides of the park.  They went to the large dog side first to let their Dane have a good romp.  Then came over to the little dog side so the chihauhua could play with dogs his own size.  Wasn't a problem in this instance since they put their Dane in a down stay and he just chilled while his companion romped around.

It's stressing me out just thinking about it. I want her and her dogs to be able to go and enjoy the park and I'm happy that she wants to do it. She's retired and lives alone with them, so they need more outside activities. IMO. I wouldn't be as concerned if she didn't get so stressed herself just walking the dogs. (I'm sure they sense that).

I will speak with her about taking one at a time and the reasons why. Hopefully she will understand and agree, otherwise, I'm not sure that I want to be a part of it. I don't want other dog owners to be irritated with me as we will be there together.

If she isn't amenable to that I will recommend that she go during the day when it's less busy. Now that the weather is cooling off a bit it's doable.

We'll see what happens. Fingers crossed! :)
