    Memory Test time...

In another thread we have been talking about the names of our dogs  my daughter challenged me to recall the pets in my life...   Let me open with I am 51 years old and almost every pet I have ever had died of old age.... This is the list of only the pets who lived with us, snuck treats  and often slept in my bed

Blue Bird ( a blue parakeet who apparently was replaced about a dozen times when we were little) Rajah and Ranee - peacocks , Bud and Schiltz -white ducks, Peck - a rooster , Hoover the pelican

I did not count the strays or rescues since our time together was limited.  I left off the rats, mice and lizzards, the fish and carnival chameleons that had tiny little leashes tied to tiny saftey pins..... everyone on my list was with me for more than a year at the least and several for more than a decade.

I was one very lucky kid and feel pretty blessed as a grown up too !

     Dogs Growing Up

Cindy - She was a black poodle

Chucky - He  was half pitbull and not sure the other half

Tiffany - She was pomeranian and shitzu

Princess Half rottweiler and I don't know lol (Been Almost 10 Months Since My Baby Passed Crying)

    • Gold Top Dog

My grandparents owned a few dogs and cats over the years.

    Cassie - Black Poodle.

Several cats over the years and I can't remember the names.

Danny - ch. Apricot Poodle, reitred from a breeder.

As a kid I had a dog for a short while.

Little Bit - runt mix of Schnauzer and Poodle. Actually, he died of heartworms.

Lady - Black Lab, I found wandering the streets in the mid 1980's. She was a sweetheart but afraid of stairs. When I moved to another place that wasn't going to allow me to keep her I had to re-home her.

Misty - cat, North American Shorthair Tabby (black and brown tiger stripe), found on the streets. First pet I was able to keep start to finish. I found her as a 5 month old stray and kept her until she was about 17, when her kidneys failed drastically and it was time to ease on over to the Bridge.

Shadow- dog, rehomed from a friend who could no longer keep him as her family was ready to surrender him to a shelter.

Jade - cat, white Turkish Angora, found on the streets, plucked out of a friend's tree.

I had goldfish as a kid but I don't remember names.

As a young child, I was a military brat. 1st stepfather was in the Navy and you go where they send you.

Basically, once on my own and completely self-sufficient, I could take care of a pet. And seeing as how I don't have children and probably never will, I might as well have pets.

    • Gold Top Dog

Dogs as a kid: Spot, Kelly, Major, Bridgette, Max, Hobo, Benji.  Special dogs who weren't mine but I babysat them:  Leroy & Muffin.

Birds as a kid: Lucky the canary, a pair of Strawberry Finches named John & Marsha, several Zebra Finches

Dogs as an adult: Lenny, Sparky, Sadie, Heidi, Shari, Bear

Cats as an adult: Gordon, Peggy, Arthur, Charlie, Missy, Moose

Birds as an adult: Frank the parakeet, Rodney & Jean the parakeets

All are at the Bridge now except Bear, Missy, & Moose.  Someday I hope to see them all again and hope they forgive me for not being an informed pet owner and/or not being able to protect some of them because I was a kid.

As a young child, I was a military brat. 1st stepfather was in the Navy and you go where they send you.

How well I remember !!  Navy Brat here.  6 kids and a dalmation named Suzie that Mom snuck onto base after base. Dad was a Chief Petty Officer so we were in Enlisted housing. Mom had mad skills at hiding Suzie and bribing the MPs with meals, treats and a shoulder when they were homesick.  She got rave reviews from the Officers for best behaved kids ( how she manged 6 of us on dad's pay grade is beyond me.) some bases allowed us to have the dog , others Mom simply "worked around".... Suze would stay inside during the day and Mom would walk her at night . She never messed or barked  We were moved across country 5 times. Suzie was born in South Carolina about 4 months after I had been born in California  She was with us till she passed at 11 years old. She really was a sibling not a pet... funny how your memory can flash on a moment in time I remember Mom driving the 6 of us and Suzie in a big old American Sedan, front seat and back seat packed... Suzie always got the front seat and my younger brother napping in the rear WINDOW .... this was long before seat belts and car seats... anyone else remember driving in the desert with a burlap water bag hanging in front of your radiator?? Jeeez I am getting Old!!

Wow, this is a challenging test!  Some of these go back to when I was born!

    Let's see....

Cats: Josh, Trip, Max, Mandy, Misty, Munchkin, Topaz (all at the bridge)
Amber, Noel, & Lily (they're my parents' current cats, but I still consider them my girls)

    Dogs: Harry (he's my first!)

    Horses: Quadros (RIP), Tessie, Aerial

A loooong time ago, my brother had a hermit crab named, of course, Hermie (we were little)

Also, there were various fish, but my folks never named any of them.

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh my, I didnt have near as many pets as most of you and I am having trouble remembering them all.

Sir Boliver-First dog I remember, was given to us by a soldier going overseas as I recall, he was an adorable Chinese Pug

Thunder - a black/tan Dobe. Dad flew all the way to Iowa to pick up this champion..lol he won everything in Puppy class but was reduced to Pet status when not all of his teeth came in.  Sir Boliver the Pug ruled the roost and Thunder thought he was a small dog too!  Lots of memories with these 2, they both lived to ripe old ages and crossed the bridge after I was grown and out of the house.

I had a duck given to me for Easter gift from my first love, Winkhis name was Quacky  and lived in my bedroom until my parents forced me to take him to a residential lake..poor Quacky was never seen again after a tornado came thru town.

    My adult life;

Starsky, cutest thing you ever saw, Irish Setter mixed with ???? coal black, full Irish Setter body and legs of a Bassett (Lost him in divorce#1)

Catfish - Mastif/shepherd mix (I lost him in divorce #2)

Zap- Totaly white cat...named for his habbit of jumping out of nowhere and attaching to your leg

Smokey A beautiful Angora Grey cat only had her a few months while cat sitting for a friend. Smokey left a few days before I met my hubby who is not a cat lover.

Bear #1- Keeshound/boxer mix was a great baby sitter for the kids as he walked them to and from the bus everyday.

Missy - Our adorable Bassett, she was stolen from us the week before Christmas and a week before a planned litter was to be born.  Very sad Christmas for us all.

Buster - Rescued shelter Bassett lost his life to a car.

Barney - Rhodesian Ridgeback lost his life to a hunter

Lacey - Rescued shelter Bassett soon followed by Lady-Terrier Mix (the Queen of the house) and then Bear#2 our first beloved Rottie.

Lacey, the nosey little thing that she was, died from getting into a nest of tics despite all that we and the vet did, she lived only a few weeks longer.

Lady died of old age, which we have no clue how old she was but was deaf/blind and loosing her teeth when she went to sleep one night and didnt wake up.

Bear lived til he was 8, a simple and successful surgery resulted in his crossing the bridge the next morning, autopsy showed an enlarged heart we didnt know about.  Very sad for hubby and I as the kids had left the house several years before and Bear was the last of our "family" pets.

Then there was Shadow....our sweet wonderful Rottie.  We only had Shadow for 4 years and we were truly blessed to have him that long.  Shadow taught us how to be the very best pet parents.  We lost Shadow in Jan this year to cancer.  It was this time last year I found the first lump.  He was for us a very special boy, he was a tremendous loss for us and our vet family.

    Now we have;

Rocky - Newf (lol)/Lab mix rescued by a foster home on the same night we lost Shadow, rescued by us Feb 2 at approx 10 weeks old. He is more Lab than Newf...ha!  He is a very smart and loyal "PUPPY"  We also have Hot Shot our very loving gentle giant.  He came to us Mother's Day weekend - given back to his breeder from an abusive owner, and rescued by us.  He is very sweet and calm and patient with the above brat puppy.  Hot Shot is a Bernese Mountain Dog.  It has taken all this time to get him settled  into the fact that he is safe and at his forever home.

I dont think I forgot any.....

    • Gold Top Dog

OMG  I forgot two pups!   That is embarassing  Bag Head  What a crummy Grandma I am, There is also Bwana's Ezkiel Bilko "Zeke"  who I reclaimed from the morons I placed him with, they were so nice and very wealthy, seemed like a good fit but in 18 months I had taken him back to train him 4 times, they basically took him home and turned himover to the household staff, the Nanny, Houskeeper and Au Pair spent more time with him than the people who owned him. I rehomed him to a good friend and Zeke  saved his life !  He kept alerting on his owner,  Denny came by and asked me why the dog was jumping up sniffing his face and getting upset, I called the wife and asked her to drag his butt to a doctor since my dogs are really very skilled at detecting things,  He had a quad bi pass 2 days later.  His heart was so blocked he would have just keeled over and died had the dog not made such a pest of himself.... Needless to say Zeke is a King in that household.

The other pup I forgot was Atlas.  That is a different story and one that still causes problems in our family.  He was a gift to stepdaughter and her husband and when baby #2 came they gave the dogs up to rescue withou letting us know. They told rescue that they did not have their papers anymore and had forgotten the breeder's names!!  2 years later we visited them in California and I had gifts for the dogs, they never notified us or let us know there was any difficulty in keeping the dogs..I was unable to track them down and it was beyond upsetting.. I am still barely on speaking terms with her because of it. I don't know where he and the other RR landed but I pray they are happy and well. Feeling Blue

Awww, a very happy story about Zeke but a sad story about Atlas.  Hopefully Atlas is living a very happy life with loving pet parents!
