Smelly Dog Question

Does anyone use Chlorophyll liquid supplement for their smelly dog? Is it safe, does it work, and if so can you recommend a brand? Cheers......

Hi Debby and welcome!!!

What kind of dog are you talking about? There are certain breeds of dogs (hounds, some spaniels) that have an odor all their own. Also, ear problems can cause odors.

I have found the biggest source of bad dog odor is the food they are eating. Lousy food=lousy smell. What are you feeding.

I've never heard of the product you are talking about. Any time I've had a smelly dog problem I've found it to be caused by ears, food, or behaior (rolling in stuff in the yard).

Hi there - thanks for quick reply.

We have a 4 month old Chow Chow (we have had him for 2 weeks) - he's fed on dry food for puppies, has clean ears (as far as I can tell) and really only has grass in the garden to roll in and that is really short!! Maybe he is just a smelly breed. We were advised not to shampoo him yet (too cold), or too often (bad for the coat), so want a natural remedy to make him more house friendly - it's not that he is awful just yet, but I can imagine that the smell will build up over time and rub off!

Any tips gratefully received.

what part smells? breath, farts, fur/skin, etc?

There are any number of dry puppy foods.....I think the question was what BRAND. Some are full of corn and fillers, so basically you get junk in/junk out. Then there are the really HIGH quality foods. If you feed a high quality food, you'll find that the odor is always less. I have six german shepherds and they flat out do NOT smell. Chows aren't a terribly smelly breed either, unless there is a health problem OR you aren't feeding them well.

If your pup smells, heavens, give it a bath! Just be sure it stays inside in a very warm room until its completely dry..all the way to the skin, and you CAN use a hairdryer to help that along. I have foster pups allll the time and I promise you that if they roll in something, they get a bath no matter what time of the year it is.

I kind of like Chase's smell. He usually doesn't smell like much at all, except after swimming. He spends a lot of time in a lake, and I think he smells like plants when he comes out. Other people say he smells like a wet dog, but what do they know?

Chase had a much stronger odor when he was smaller. We were feeding him Nutro and he had a very "doggy" smell. He also had smelly gas. Since we switched him to Eagle Pack Holistic and started adding a dollop of yogourt to his food, his odor has gone! With the exception, of course, of his after-swim perfume.

His breath has improved too, although I still don't like to breathe in when he's panting in my face.

To the question what smells? Breath is OK, haven't heard/smelled any farts yet! Basically its a fur thing....... Thanks for sharing ! Debby

Yeah, I think as long as you don't send them outside, dripping wet, when it's below 32 degrees outside, they'll be fine.

We bathe when we can feel it in their fur, once or twice a month. More if there's a trip to the lake, etc. Just use a mellow shampoo and towel dry them as best you can. When it's cold outside we use a hair dryer to help.

BTW I juice parsley and add it to their food, they love it and it seems to have helped, although I have a coonhound, and there is not a lot i can do about his "fritos" smell. (and they are on Innova and Cal Nat, not too shabby)

if all you have is a stinky puppy, then I say give it a bath. Dry well and make it fun time. This will also get him accustomed to the whole bath thing. Starting when they are youngish helps out greatly in the long run. Same goes for nail trims, teeth cleaning, brushing, etc.
Just use a gentle shampoo, rinse like the dickens and dry well. And don't forget thetreat afterwards!
