There are lots of lunch trucks around here... I would KILL for a decent Mexican taco cart. OMG. Sorry, New England, but you don't know good Mexican food from old tennis shoes.
That aside, I can't imagine the trucks are actually "doing business every day, at all hours of the day or night." Seriously? Do they have the customer base to support that? Would YOU want to be stuck cooking in the back of a truck 24-7? It's more likely that the carts show up for lunch hour, maaaybe dinner, and leave after the rush is over.
As far as competition... I think it's a very different market from most restaurants. It's not like, "Oh, should I get a taco from this cart right here, or should I go to Outback Steakhouse for dinner?" The carts are distinctly fast food, so unless the businesses complaining are also fast food, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Or the restaurants were overpriced/not tasty/unfriendly to begin with.
Sadly, I'm guessing most of it boils down to not wanting the "undesirables" with their smelly food carts "dirtying up the neighborhood." I'm glad the "taco wars" were dropped!
And even though it's breakfast time, I would absolutely die for a decent street-style taco right now. Some decent carnitas, maybe some carne asada... ::swoon::
