Aboslutely. Don't let it ruin your HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Dogs have a terrible sense of time. As long as you don't make a habit of it.
One time, I got stuck at a friends' house after my van broke down. She couldn't drive me home - I lived an hour away, she had two kids and I had two, and three dogs with me, and the only vehicle she had was a truck with a bench seat.
I had left Maggie at home inside and I was sure she'd have to potty in the house. I felt terrible. It was the weekend in a tiny non-town and I wasn't going to be able to get anyone to even look at my van for two days!
I finally got a hold of friends who lived 30 miles from our farm, and asked them to go let Maggie out into the fenced yard and feed and water everyone. When they got there, the house was perfectly clean after Maggie had been locked up for more than 24 hours!
Gail said she'd never seen a dog pee that long in her life, though, or look so happy to do it. lol. They were happy to keep checking in during the rest of my involuntary vacation at my other friend's home so everything worked out fine. Since then I've made sure that I either leave dogs where they can be comfortable in case we're gone a while, or else in the yard if it's safe (since we live literally a mile from every closest neighbor and have multiple dog-proof fences all the way around).
