Way back in April 2006, my rescue organization approached me to take in Bob, a one year old Bull Mastiff, and Vaughn, a Collie mix. It would be a temporary arrangement for 3 weeks because the owner, who volunteered for the organization, got into trouble with drugs and had to go through drug rehab. I agreed. 4 weeks passed, no inquiry or any word from the owner. Two months pass and still no contact with the organization or me to reclaim her dogs. At this time I approached the organization to get the dogs declared abandoned so the organization can take ownership and rehome. The organization stepped up trying to contact her and also looked into how they can legally take ownership. I am now in the 3rd month of caring for the dogs. As part of the process of taking ownership, the organization had prove they attempted to make contact and also advertise. Well, the owner responds and says she does not want to abandon the dogs and will make arrangements to pick them up. It was just more and more delays and now I am in my 4th month with the dogs. I reached my limit and I told the owner that I have contacted another rescue organization, far far away, and they are coming to pick the dogs up that night. The owner attempted one more time to delay and I told her arrangements have been set unless she comes over now and pick up the dogs. She agreed and traveled to my home to retrieve her dogs. Lesson learned....have a contract.
If the owner would have abandoned the dogs, the dogs could have stayed with me as long as it takes to get them rehomed. I did develop an attachment to them.
I don't know what happened to the dogs after that. I was contacted today by my rescue organization that Bob and Vaughn were being boarded at a kennel and have been there for the past year. The owner of the kennel has not been paid one red cent for their upkeep and the dogs have not been vaccinated. The kennel owner is working with my rescue organization for the org to take possession of the dogs. The rescue org asked me to take in Bob and Vaughn and could not say no. I am sure there is more to the Bob and Vaughn story that I am not being told. But that owner, I suspect I will hear from her one day. I feel so sorry for these guys and I hope their personalities are the same as when they were here before. Here are some pictures from April 2006.
