Hurricane Ike kills up to 15,000 cattle

We have heard a lot about the losses (lives and property) people have suffered during Hurricane Ike - even some about pets.  The New York Times article below is about cattle loss and grazing area loss.

Fifteen thousand cattle are still missing.  Some are dead and most of the rest are severely dehydrated from the lack of fresh water.  Fences are gone for about 20 miles inland from the coast.  It may be two years before the saltwater-burnt vegetation in pastures recovers enough to support grazing.

Most ranchers do not have insurance to cover their losses.

I know there's not much they can do for all these farm animals prior to a storm, but it still makes me very sad.

I saw a picture in our local paper about three days before Ike hit of a rancher and his 20 hands on horseback getting his cattle off of High Island.  It was pretty neat looking, like the Old West.  They (whoever "they" are LOL) say that there are a lot of dead cattle on Galveston.  Livestock often drown because they become stuck in barbed wire fencing.  In the 98 flood around here lots of folks were cutting fences to free animals and hopefully find them later.
