I saw my first Mudi this weekend

Ever hear of this dog? They are very rare, with only about 50 or so in the US (so I'm told). There were 2 at the herding trial I was at on Friday. I had never heard of this breed before. It was very cool to watch it herd. They were just taking their instinct tests. Man were they FAST. I mean, most herding dogs are pretty quick, but this thing reminded me of the road runner cartoon. It spring from a down position and just TAKE OFF! And it looked so effortless. Very cool.

She had both of her dogs imported from Hungary and has breeding plans for both.

    Here's a pic of one

    What a stunning dog.

What a beautiful dog!  Since I had never heard of one I looked it up.  Sounds like a very intelligent, loyal breed.  How odd that it is so rare.  The picture you show is much prettier that the one I saw online.   Thanks for sharing it with us

They're one of my very favourite breeds .An assistant to some obedience classes I was taking had a Mudi, and there was another one who used to come in every so often as well. There are always quite a few at the big outdoor dog show I go to every August here too. I wanted one for a while, but they're not really suited to my lifestyle at this particular time. :)

Both of this lady's dogs were gorgeous. She had a red merle (like the one above) and blue merle (actually black merle). They seem to be a lot like aussies and border collies as far as their personalites go. One was stand offish with strangers while the other was happy to meet anyone.

Love love love the Mudi. Love their curls. And usually I'm not much of a curly haired dog person. Well, guess most of the time they're more wavy than curly.

Mudis are more like Aussies than like Border Collies - they are an all-around farm dog, with talents in the hunting, vermin control, and watchdog realm as well as herding.  Their herding style is more focused on general droving tasks (moving large flocks/herds from one place to another).  So, good balance, pace a bit lacking (lol), definitely have to be "convinced" to keep proper distance on flanks.

I actually have a secret longing for a Croatian sheepdog, which is similar but more herding focused.  Not quite as, uh, bouncy.  ;)
