    D-Con and Dogs

My girls were out playing and scared a rabbit from it's hiding spot. The rabbit ran under the deck where I had a bait box with D-Con pellets. The bait box tipped over and out spilled the pellets. I always go out in the yard with my girls so I watched as everything played out. I'm glad I was out there.

Kya was closest to the deck so she got to the pellets and ate some just as I was yelling, in my best devil voice, 'leave it." The other two never moved after they heard the "leave it." I picked up what pellets were left and went in to call the vet. They told me to get there now.

As soon as we got there they induced vomitting and only found a few small pieces of the pellets. Kya will be on vitamin K for 30 days. The vet thinks she will be Ok because I stopped her from eating anymore and I got her to the vet quickly. I do have to keep an eye on her stools and urine for a while to watch for any blood.

Kya is my 1 1/2 year old in my avatar. I'd like to ask for your good thoughts until we know she is in the clear.

Oh gosh too scary.  Kya is in my thoughts till she's in the clear.  I'm glad you were right there when it happened.

Thank goodness you saw what happened!!  I hope she will be just fine since she probably threw up what she ate and the Vet is taking no chances.  Scary. Sending you good vibes for Kya.

Thanks everyone. She doesn't seem to be acting out of the ordinary but the vet did say to keep her up and going. He figures a moving dog drinks more water thus flushing her system. We have been on a long walk and now just finished playing ball.

    I'll keep you updated.

Glad she's appearing no worse for wear.

I know someone who lost all three of her dogs to rat poison at a friend's house - by the time they realized what happened it was too late. :(  Her story is the reason I will NEVER use poison in or around my house as you never know what might happen to make the stuff available for ingestion.

The big deal is getting vet help NOW if you even *suspect* poisoning.  If you wait for symptoms to 'show' it's too late because by then the internal bleeding is too profuse.  GOOD FOR YOU that you a) thought quickly and acted, and b) that you have trained your dogs to a good solid "Leave it" command!!

Best prayers and good thots for you guys!!
