I bought the dogs marrow bones... what to expect?

I bought the dogs marrow bones... what to expect?

They will be eating them outside, seperate from eachother (both have issues....) and tonight IS bath night - so I'm all up for that.\

Casey gets table scraps both raw and cooked (It was a part of his 'training' that just continued.... he's not obnoxious about it, so don't fixate on the from the table part. he must sit or lay down, and he doesn't beg). anyways... his stomach is pretty durable. He eats Blue Buffalo food, with EVO canned mixed in - handles that very well, never has issues if I change the topper canned food.

I don't know how Harley will react, since he's not my dog - we don't give him as much from the table because he has enough bad habits... we don't need to add another!

I'm not planning on letting them eat their entire bones. But this is something I would like to start offering every now and then - Casey is not a big chewer, and his teeth reflect that, despite buying pretty much every chew bone known to man, and teeth brushing.

tips? suggestions? they are in the freezer now....

When Maze gets marrow bones, the bone it self is to thick for her to break but the marrow she loves! When she's finished with the bone, I'll take it and wash it out and use it for peanut butter or such.

Just keep an eye on Harley's stomach. Maze had the runs the first time since she wasn't use to the richness of it.

I'm sure other people with have other advice. Smile

that's what I'm expecting - so I'm not going to let him finish any where near all the bone. He gets the same dog food as Casey, but it hasn't been as long. I started him straight on BB, and he did great.... but ya never know =]

You might want to scoop out a bit of the marrow from each bone.  Sometimes it can be too rich the first time round.

I did the same as Oranges. Lillie actually prefers the peanut butter in the bone than her kong. Weird dog.

Maze gets yougurt in her kong and peanut butter in the bones. Lol. She's weird that way. Tongue Tied

Good suggestion.  Here are a couple of others:

Don't feed them their marrow bones together.  Dogs that eat from each others' bowls with no incident can get nasty over these.  I go so far as to just let my dogs chew on one end while I hold the other - then I "trade" them for it, back and forth, by offering a piece of beef or liver as I say the word "trade".  The dogs learn to enjoy the bone, but right from the get go they assume that it belongs to me, and I'm just sharing.  Plus, I can get it back nicely with no argument, and they don't think they've been shortchanged:-))

Oh no - I would never feed them together. I can't even feed kibble together with these two....

I gave them the bones, they really didn't seem to know what to do with them! Harley got the hang of it, and had no objection to me taking it away - he has no issues with humans...just other dogs.

Casey... well.... I think he licked it mostly. We'll try again some other day. He liked it, I just don't think he chewed it like he should have. haha.

Both of my girls usually let them thaw a little before really going at it. Abbie loves the marrow part, but Layla seems to prefer Abbie's leftover bone once the marrow has been eaten out and there are bits of meat on the outside of the bone. Our floors are tiled so I let them have them in the living room and clean up after them. But the bones stay around for a while and they keep going back to them again and again. They get them about once per week and their teeth look great! They enjoy them with peanut butter mixed with a little yogurt frozen inside and frozen liverwurst is good too!

I have to agree with the teeth looks great after a chew session on a marrow bone. Lillie was getting a little tartar on her teeth and I got her a couple marrow bones. Her teeth nice and white again!!

Mine get theirs IN THEIR CRATES.  Absolutely, positively, ONLY there.  Whoever said above that they can get ratty over these -- TRUE.  I time them and then take them away (and usually it involves letting the dogs out of crates and LOCKING them immediately and then we go back and get rid of the bone while they're outside.

     I don't re-freeze or re-give.  I just toss them.

they were seperated with a door. I have a hard time handling raw meat.... and I certainly don't want it in my bedroom (where the crates are). Casey was in the backyard, and Harley on the back porch. I stayed with both and kept an eye. Both allowed me to take them away - which made me glad. I knew Casey would, but I kept a leash on Harley just in case - he was fine though too.

Hopefully next time, Casey wil actually chew it............

LOL the first FEW times Bugsy got raw bones he would just pick it up and then whine - drove us nuts.  We trained him to just lay on a towel with it- if he went off the towel he had to give up the bone - he got that real quick. When i did give him a bone outside he just buried it.  Then weeks later I'd see him eating an ant covered mess.  Then one of the neighbor's dogs took one home and ate it and got the poops.  No more outside bones for him.

Tootsie loves marrow bones. She gets all the marrow out, takes a break, then goes back for some serious chewing. I always give them frozen too. When her and Dingo get bones together, she always goes in another room to eat it.

Ari loves marrow bones.  When she's done with getting off the bits of meat and marrow I wash them then stuff them with things like cottage cheese, peanut butter, some fruits and freeze.  I throw them out usually after a few uses.  Thankfully with only 1 dog in the house I don't need to worry about any fighting.

The first time we gave her one she was a bit confused - but picked it up quickly after that!
