Emergency Whistle Bait

    Emergency Whistle Bait

I use an emergency whistle for my dogs.  I use those little Cesar containers made for little dogs.  They work fine for me.  But my friend has 6 dogs and carrying 6 of those packs isn't practical on an everyday basis.  Any ideas on something easier for her to use?  Beef Jerky doesn't work for Eclipse(Crusher's brother), nor does sardines.  Any other ideas?

     Jars of baby food?

Dr. Becker's Bites, or freeze dried liver.

I am completely confused -- "emergency whistle baith" ??  You mean something so incredibly attractive they'll come when too interested in something else?  I'm having trouble associating "whistle" with food?

I'm assuming you're training a whistle recall? depends entirely on the dog what they go nutso for. Most dogs really like liver and roast beef. garlic chicken. hot dogs. cat food. bacon. some dogs prefer toys.

Callie, we have huskies.  Anyone that has had huskies before knows the recall of a husky is at best, kinda somewhat ok once in a while if they really want to come back anyway.  And for the most part we keep them on leash unless we're in a spot where they can't get into any trouble.  But once in a while things happen, and dogs get loose.  So we have both trained Emergency Whistles.  We have boat whistles that we use only when it is imperative that they come back.  For me, its when another dog is around or there's traffic or generally just city dangers.  For her she has to worry about deer, moose, skunks, and the odd truck that one of her dogs thinks should be chased away.  The way we've trained this is to just randomly blow the boat whistles and then quickly shove a Cesar tray of little dog food in front of them before they have had a chance to figure out what the whistle was for.  Do that for a few weeks, every few days and the dogs figure out that this particular whistle means great treat that they never ever get at any other time.  Eventually you can use that for emergencies, when the dog ignores his name or any other sort of recall.  It has to be proofed once a month or so, but its been pretty effective.

For me, carrying two cesar packs around with me isn't a big deal.  Even if its just one dog that takes off, when the whistle is blown, all dogs in hearing range MUST get the reward or it will lose effectiveness.  So when you have six dogs and you blow the whistle you have to be ready with six rewards.  And they have to be things that you never use any other time.  So sardines don't work, because both of us feed sardines on a regular basis.  Beef Jerky isn't high value enough.  Liver is also something that is fed regularly.  Baby Food jars might work for mine, but its hard to carry 6 jars of food, at least as hard as the 6 Cesar packs.   So in effect, the rewards have to be small enough to pack 6 into a fannypack, yet be high value enough to bring back any dog, AND last a long time since they may not be used more than once a month sometimes.

Tyler suggested anchovies.  Are they smellier or stronger tasting than sardines?

    Thanks fur 'splainin!!

Anchovy is STRONG -- like if you like caesar salad you might use one tiny strip of an anchovie for your entire dish of salad cut into tiny tiny bites.

Anchovy PASTE would be easy to carry and you could squirt off a length for each dog??

What about very thick crispy bacon that could be cut into chunks?  Or chunks of liverwurst lunch meat?  I've been training recall with the baby food, but I just let both mine lick from it at once.  I guess that wouldn't work with 6 huskies, huh?  Big Smile   I wonder if parmesan chips would work.  You know, you take shredded fresh good parmesan and put it on parchment under the broiler for just a few seconds and then cool, it melts into a potato chip type crisp.  Might be worth a try.  Or maybe limburger cheese!  LOL!  Smelly and one of a kind!

All great ideas if we used the whistle everyday, or at least knew when we were going to need it.  But the thing is, you never know when an emergency is going to happen, and you can't just give them these rewards unless you blow the whistle.  Plus if you use it too often it loses its effectiveness.  So any of these things would just end up in the garbage 9 times out of ten.  That's the big problem here.

Do they like peanut butter? You can buy reusable plastic tubes for camping and stuff them with peanut butter. Easy to carry, one tube will work for all the dogs and last a long time, and it doesn't require refrigeration.

Would she have to carry actual jars of baby food?  Gerbers has toddler food in jars and I was thinking that a jar of those little tiny hot dogs that look like cocktail franks could be dumped into a zip lock baggie and just put in a pocket. Anything left over could be popped into the freezer when she got home.

Is there at least 6 in a jar?  Cause one jar wouldn't be hard to carry...

Peanut butter is for nail trimming time unfortunately, or that might work.  The anchovie paste might work though...

Have they ever had honey?  The health food stores carry those straws that are full of raw honey, I think they're made of beeswax, and I think the top can just be popped right off them.  That would cover the perishable problem.  Just throwing ideas at ya.  Big Smile

    Like these.

And they have to be things that you never use any other time.

this isn't necessarily true- I use a wide assortment of treats for recall training and use the same treats for other kinds of training.

The jars look like there's at least six .... if not, they look like they're long enough to cut in half.
