Is there a doctor in the house? Callie? (huskymom)

     Grrrr...I'm getting sick.  Figures.  On one hand, I typically lose weight when I'm sick, but my energy goes away.  I so cannot afford to be sick right now.  I have so much on my plate that a lack of energy is not a good thing.  Any ideas on what I can take?  Right now I just have a sore throat that starts way up in my nose and I also have a runny nose and sneezes.  Oh and my shoulders are achy and I have a bit of a headache.  Normally, I would prescribe myself some cough medicine, a couple tylenol and lots of sleep, but nursing a newborn snuffs out those ideas.  I'd be in bed right now, but I wanted to come and post this and do a bit of searching on my own.  I'm not finding anything.  Help Me!  {stumbles off to OD on Vitamin C}

Oscillococcinum.  It's awesome stuff, and it won't interfere with nursing.  It's a homeopathic - you can even find it at Wal-Mart (got a 24 hour Wal-mart near you? Send out the husband!) - this page even has a $1.50 coupon

There are 3 little tubes in a battery -- you put the contents of the entire tube under your tongue and let dissolve.  Repeat in 6 hours ... and then again in 6 more hours.  It works with your body clock to boost your immune system.

You take it at the first sign of flu -- if you wait until you are down sick it can help cut the length of time you're sick but it will actually help you kick it before you get it if you take it now.  I always buy the two battery box so I have one in my purse for later.

Do you have any zinc?  That can help short term but I"m not sure I'd take it if you are breast-feeding.  And even Vit C may give the baby diarreha.

Chammomile tea is pretty benign and that will help you feel not so wretched tonight.  It will help your achey feeling and the headache.  If you can send the husband to a grocery store they often have chammomile in the tea section -- plain old chammomile is the best.  Celestial Seasonings "Sleepytime" is largely chammomile, but even the Spanish herb section may have chamomile

Honey and lemon mixed together will soothe the throat.  Just mix enough lemon juice into honey to make it thinner -- it will coat your throat.

Slippery elm would help a good deal if you have any, and again it's very benign and won't hurt a nursing baby.

     Eek...lost my post...

We have no 24 hour walmart here.  But I'll send Tyler in the morning.  Hope they have it.  Canada can be wierd that way.

I'm gonna go and make some chamomile tea, I'm sure I have some.  And I'll finish up the honey if I can get it out of the bottle...maybe I'll just pour the lemon in there.

I think there is zinc in my pre/postnatal vitamins...I'll have to look.  And perhaps I'll scale back on the Vit C.  Cept it makes my nose feel better for a few minutes...I have the chewable ones that I like to take when I'm getting sick.  Feels like I'm doing something to help myself.

I may just end up taking some tylenol.  My doctor told me I could take it when I get migraines soooo...it stands to reason that I could take it for aches too, I think.

ETA:  I forgot to say Thanks for Replying so quickly.  I said it in my first post before it flew off into cyberspace, never to be seen again...

My unscientific opinion, what works when I get sick is lots and lots of orange juice and ice cold soy milk, those are generally the only things that I can keep down and they both taste nice and fresh and aren't hard on the stomach. Plus, the organic soy milk has lots of vitimins and it's the good kind of "energy" that'll boost your energy reserves overall. Take care.Zip it!

Neither of these things will hurt a nursing baby and for some weird reason, when I was a kid, my mom had us guzzle this concoction at the first sign of a cold and it would really work!  She'd take a small glass (as in 2 - 3 ozs.) of orange juice and mix in one or two tablespoons of olive oil, mix it up real fast and guzzle it down.  Don't have the faintest idea why it worked but her holistic chiropractor (back before they were using that word) recommended it and it always worked like a charm.  Hope you feel better!

Ick! - My mom used to make me drink something like that too. I'm not sure it helped but it sure tasted nasty. The last time I had a bad sore throat, I drank orange juice and almost burst into tears. It burned my throat like crazy!!

I still think bed rest and chicken noodle soup are the best things, but I also take Vit C and if I catch it early enough, I feel that Zicam helps. If it's a super bad head cold with congestion, then I suggest trying Mucinex. I bought it for DH last year when he had a bad cold and he was feeling better within 24 hours.

LOL, maybe it works on the same principal as Buckley's?  My dad always says, it tastes so bad you body is scared into getting better, lest you have to take more of it.

I'm still feeling like crap.  I've been eating Vit C today.  I also had some tea and I ended up getting some Contact Cold and Sore Throat.  I was going to pick up some honey today and totally forgot all about it.  I steamed myself in the bathroom with a hot shower running in an attempt to clear my sinuses.  It helped until I left the bathroom.Confused  I wish I was still a kid and life could just be put on hold when I'm sick.  There's no such thing as calling in sick when you're a mom...

Have you ever tried using a Neti Pot? There was a thread going several months back about them and since then, I've seen it on Oprah (Dr Oz) and it seems like everyone I know uses one. I bought one and even for allergies it amazing. It's totally safe to use too, so if you haven't tried one, you should really consider it.
