My dog's new Backpack that I made! **VERY PIC HEAVY**

I have an obsession with Technical fabrics, i just think they're really neat.  So I made my dog's a backpack ( just one so far! lol)  It fits Bella & Akyra.  the coolest thing, imo, is the reflective fabric!  Its soo cool. i even sewed some onto the harness part, it turned out pretty good. the bags are pretty big, i think the next one I make will be smaller.....

akyra giving me the evil eye

     Bella sticking her tongue out

Bella Zoo being a good doggie model

    pack mule lol

Back detail - made from reflective paracord - if needed it can be undone & used - its about 4' of paracord

probably going to design a little 'pad' to go under this part.

Extra's cuz Zoo is just too cute with her little airplane ears

    orange 500 denier cordura ( waterproof) used about 1 yard - $12

    black 500 denier cordura ( waterproof)  used about 1.5 yards - $15.75

Probably used about $2 worth of reflective ripstop polyester - $2

    Hardware - o-rings about $1.50

    Paracord - $1

Poly webbing - less than $1

took me about 2-3 hours to make ( had to redo alot of stuff!! my first time trying to make one)

    so about $32

That is awesome for your first pack.  And I love Zoo as your model.  Too cute.  She looks like she's saying "Hey laday, I ain't no pack mule!".

    • Gold Top Dog

Wow that's cool lets us know how it goes out in the "field" hehe I reckon Chip would promtly get himself caught on something with a back pack but great idea & you have done well

hehe I love your pack mule very cute face

I don't want to be the party pooper here so please don't take this the wrong way.  I DO like the design and the colors, etc.  They are very nice.  However, they are way too high up on the dogs-they need to carry the backpack in the middle of the back, not up at the shoulders.  I did a lot of research on back packs about a year ago when I started hiking with Willow.  Also, I'm not sure much your dogs weigh but just by looking at the pictures it seems that those packs are a little too big--which wouldn't be a big deal if they were empty but if carrying something it might go beyond what the dogs are supposed to be carrying.  They are only supposed to carry a certain percentage of their weight.

I'm only saying this because they can get injured.  I LIKE the packs, but since you did show the pictures I felt I needed to share the info I had.

Uh Lori where'd you get that info?  Everything I've *ever* read about backpacking with dogs says the weight needs to be over the shoulders as a dog's back isn't structured to carry weight.

I think it's a cool pack OP (esp the reflective fabric - very neat!), just be careful not to over load it - dogs should carry about 10-25% of their body weight.  Some breeds can do more, but 10-25% is considered safe for all dogs from what I have seen.

yup I know they're big, I actually stated that earlier, haven't figured out how to make them smaller yet.  I can easily adjust the straps so that the weight is carried further back. i read that you're not supposed to have the dog carry more than 10% of their weight. :)

My next ones will be smaller. Just a creative project that I can put on my dogs. LOL  I think these would fit a goat better. hehe

This is the brand Willow has, they are very reputable.  You can get an idea of the correct sizing, etc for the size of your dog(s).

I love those fabrics too and you have some excellent models.

Do you find that the fabric shreds really easily when torn or punctured the wrong way?  That is actually how I got into using grommets.

no not yet, they haven't really been used yet. Cordura is supposed to be tough, we'll see how it stand up. the reflective is 'ripstop' so it's supposed to not shred or tear - but again it hasn't seen any abuse yet.  I'd like to use grommets just because it opens up another door of creativity - the thing I could make!! like custom tarps & stuff!

you did a great job on those! I'd like to see more of your dog projects please Smile
