    Rude dog owners

Do you think this is rude or is it just me.

Ok this was I think wednesday and I went to this vet for business. Ok so i am in the vet filling out some papper work. This guy walk in with his dog Cairn-Terrier if you must know. Ok he sits down and his dogs just starts barkeing at me. This goes on for about a minute or two he does nothing. Then he must have got sick of it and said stop.
Do you think this is rude? To sit there and let your dog bark at some one, until you are ready for them to stop. I mean even the people at the desk was looking at him.

I mean an excuse me or sorry would be nice. He did not even look at me.

I think it's rude, too. Schmee doesn't bark, but she will make a scene trying to get to the people in the vet's office to say, "hello" and it's so embarrasing. From the minute I'm in there, I'm constantly reminding her to sit and stay, and praising her when she does...and that embarrases me!

JMO, you're at a vet's office, dogs bark. Unclench just a little bit.

Just what I was thinking.  A lot of dogs really stress out when they're at the vet's office.  I stress out at the gyno's office ... I just try really hard not to bark or pee on anything. [:D]

It really depends. WHen Mal is very, very excited, he barks. Short of sitting on him and holding his mouth shut, he WILL bark until he settles down. Ignoring him does produce the best response, and while it's annoying, in some place like a vet's office where you don't want to wait outside? I'd just cope, frankly, if it was someone else's dog. (And rejoice in the fact that it's NOT yours.)

Mal is getting quieter as he grows up and settles some- but when people get upset, it just revs him up more.

To me, that's a little like expecting quiet at the McDonald's playyard because people are eating nearby.  I don't find it rude, but ;perhpas a bit embarrassing for the owner of the dog.

I think it would take more than some barking - if the dog was pulling/lunging at me, then my space is invaded (or my dogs) and personally, I would just speak up.

    But that's just me.[;)]

Not what I really think is rude is - take this scene at our local dog park. About 10 of us are in a circle talking, our dogs playing nicely, and one small breed is high pitched barking non-stop for probably 1/2 hour, irritating us to no end. Every 5 minutes the mom would look over her shoulder and say "Shelty stop that, bad girl" then go on talking.

We all thought that was rude.

Some dogs just need to be ignored to get the idea that barking won't get them anything.   They bark for attention and sometimes even bad attention is better to them than no attention.  I mostly just expect dogs to be barking and cats to be yowling when we go to the vet.  With my mom's dog I even expect to be the ones with the very loudly barking dog that will not be quieted for anything.  It's taken 10years to get him to go from loudly barking for up to an hour no matter what you do to him to only barking for 10mins and then grumbling and growling for the rest of the time.  Ignoring him and just sitting there pretending he's not barking is actually the only thing that helped.

it happens, and has happened to me, but the owners are normally polite enough to do one of two things... try to control their dogs or apologize for the dog's barking in peoples faces.
there was one instance where the dog just wouldnt shut up so i barked back.... then it was a game, waggy tail and happy face... all i said was "woof woof woof you think you're a tough guy doncha"

Ripley is a barker, and it can be pretty embarassing. He's very friendly, but he barks at other dogs and sometimes people, particularly when he is leashed and isn't allowed to get to them. I am working on training him to stop when I say "thank you", but he is only 6 months old and it's very hard to get him to stop once he gets going, especially if I'm out with both shelties and they are both barking. It's a breed characteristic, so I don't know how much luck I am going to have with training him not to bark. I usually apologize when he's being obnoxious, but I can't always stop him, so please give us owners of barkers a break. We are probably dying of embarassment, trying not to do anything that will encourage our dogs, and wondering if you are thinking we are horrible dog owners - most of us are not trying to be rude.

All dogs have...issues. I think it would be just nice to hear for once - "Sorry, I'm working on this with him" rather than pretending to do something, but - not really.

As for puppies - well, they are all just a work in progress, aren't they~[:)]

To the ones who said it is not rude. You, mean you will sit there and let your dog bark at some you do not know. That is just rude.

Don't you think a  sorry or excuse me would me nice.

Okay, calling people ignorant is a little over the top.  I guess I'm one of them though.  At the vet dogs will bark, cats will yowl, and birds will screech.  They're in a stressful situation and many look at the vet office as a really bad place to be.  That said, a sincere apology and keeping the dog at your side and out of your face is appropriate.  After all, all dogs are a work in progress, not just puppies.

You asked for opinions, you got them. I'm not sure it's fair to suggest that we didn't understand the question just because you don't like some of the opinions.

I don't think it's rude. It's a vets office, dogs get excited/stressed/overwhelmed at the vets and some of them cope by barking. I wouldn't take it so personally, but that's just me.

To the ones who said it is not rude that is just ignorant. You, mean you will sit there and let your dog bark at some you do not know. That is just selfish.

Yes we got what your'e saying. We're saying in the great scheme of things, a barky dog at the vet is not that big a deal. It's not selfish, it's not rude, they weren't out to get you, chillax.
