I am a teacher in Brooklyn, NY. I work with children from around the world who are all learning English as a second language, who have moved to Brooklyn with their families and speak a language other than English as their first language.
My students are ages 8-11 and have varying proficiencies in English.
OK, so I am going to be teaching a unit with my 5th graders on the Geography of the United States.
I have joined a postcard exchange wherein our classroom exchanges postcards with what would ideally be every state in the USA. Unfortunately, the exchange I have joined does not have participants from every state.
As nice as it would be to receive and share with my students (how exciting!) a postcard from every state in the USA containing little tidbits of (child friendly) info about each state, unfortunately, in many exchanges its impossible.
That is why I have turned to you guys.
If you would be willing to pick up a postcard representative of something you love about your state, pen a little message containing tidbits of info about your state, pop a stamp on it, and send it over to our school, I would be oh-so-appreciative.
What I am looking for in terms of messages is:
"Hello from New York, the big apple! The capital of New York is Albany, and the biggest city is New York City, where we come from!"
Or...
"Hello from Sunny California. We are located on the West Coast, along the Pacific Ocean."
Whatever you feel is important to say!
In response, you would get a thank you message straight from our class (either in the mail or over email, depending on how many people agree to help me out!! Im trying to figure out a creative way to share thank you messages, photos of the kids enjoying the postcards, as well as pictures of bulletin boards and projects we do with the post cards!).
Please PM me if you care to help! You will help to provide a very exciting and valuable educational experience to my students. Real life interaction with the states of our country will add a great dynamic to our study!
I am still looking for the following states:
Hawaii
Nebraska
North Dakota
South Dakota
If you don't see your state on there, that means I've already got it.... but
Don't Be Shy[/b], the more post cards the better. This project is going to be so exciting for the kids that it doesn't matter if we have more than one from each state. Getting mail is fun (and in this case, educational) and every postcard will have a different picture and a different message!
My goal is to get at least one postcard from every state. Please help make that possible!
And... If you're not from the states and would like to participate... Don't feel left out. If you're willing to contribute I'd be so so so so pleased!
Thank you all.
