Oh irresponsible pet owners how I hate thee!

Our local Lowe's has changed it's policy to require dogs only in carts in the store because stupid people screwed it up for the rest of us (via potty accidents and aggressive animals)!

Maggie and I were walking around with DH this morning looking at refrigerators, etc. - several staffers stopped to say hi to Maggie as we shopped and we got our usual looks from shoppers who saw my dog walking at heel next to me.  As we were getting ready to leave, a staff person (manager?) stopped and started talking about dogs in the store: "I'm sure she's a nice dog but we've had some problems, so we prefer that dogs stay in carts."  Caught off guard, I recovered quickly and said, "I can totally understand, but she's much more of a risk in a cart - she's not comfortable in something that moves like that."  To which I got a reply about something to do with "well she 's ok for the rest of this visit I guess (implied, "but don't come back with her on the ground";)". Come on people, that's not preferring a dog in a cart, that's REQUIRING.  If you're gonna ban them, ban them.

I happened to think fast enough to mention something about the CGC and how that might be useful, but as DH said, the guy's eyes pretty much glazed over at that point.

So the stupid people have taken away one more dog friendly space where I could train my dogs. GRRRR!

I'm thinking about writing to them to express my dismay and give some suggestions that will help them while still allowing dog owners access to a great training location and fun place their dog can tag along to.  And you can bet if I find another home improvement store that will allow my dog I'll be shopping there, not at this Lowe's.

I know! There is a bookstore here that I've been taking Maze since she was a puppy. Well thanks to someone bringing a large WET dog in to a bookstore, all dogs are now banned.  The owner didn't want to do it but she had no choice.  I made sure that Maze hadn't done anything wrong and they still ask about her but it's still sad that she can't come in anymore.

Thankfully there's another bookstore I go to that still allows dogs but I'm just counting down til some idiot with an off leash dog goes in there and the dog destroys something.  Until then thou Maze stilll happily prances into the store and gets her pats.

Around here that aren't many places that allow dogs due to idiots not controlling their dogs.  It is really sad cuz people around here are leery of dogs so it makes socializing really hard to do as well.  I know when I get my Shepherd puppy that I'm going to have to twice as hard to make sure he's friendly.

I hate to hear this.   Its been a few months since I took Rocky to Lowes but I used to take Shadow all the time.   One day when I had Rocky there a man came with his dog off leash.  The dog was good but kept going over to everyone that walked by to get a pet.   I can understand why the would require a leash but in a cart?  I cant even lift Rocky let alone put him in a cart.   We have a landscape nursery that gets on to me if I dont bring Rocky with me so he usually gets to go with me there.   Hot Shot has not ventured out with me yet, wanted him to get used to his forever home before putting him in a vehicle.  I would love to take him to Lowes and the park, he is great on a leash.  Around here we even have a few small parks that no longer allow you to bring your dogs.   I think there should be more places you can socialize your dogs not less.

i really agree with this. there isn't many places around where I live where I can take my dogs. It's pretty much the local non-chain coffee shop and the feed store.  We were uraling ( riding in our ural lol) and we had Amber with us.  We stopped at starbucks, I picked her up & carried her in, I ordered my coffee & I ordered amber a cup of water - then the lady lets me know ( after I've been in the place for 5 minutes) 'next time leave the dog outside'

pffttt.....ya leave my dog outside, there wont be  next time at that starbucks.LOL

the only stores around here that allow pets are pet stores. And watching the antics of the dogs/dog owners in petsmart on a sunday afternoon I sure see why...

I ran into a girl the other day, why brought her dog that had fleas into the PetCo....

ETA: Not a behavior problem, but poor judgment all the way.

Wow!  Where I live, the only place that you can take a leashed dog is any petstore.  Not allowed near food places, no where near children, not allowed to be near people with allergies etc.. Basically.. dogs aren't allowed here, there or almost anywhere...Sad  I'd sooo love to have places that I could take a dog.. (like a bookstore!)  Some people bend the rules and take them into a Wal-Mart or a Michaels.. but other than that. it's a no.

I can bring my dog to Petsmart, Pet Supplies Plus, PetCo, and feed stores.  One feed store near me even has its own dog park. I have seen a chihuahua in a shopping cart in Wal-Mart and a poodle in a shopping cart in Lowe's.  I do not know if the owners had to ask to bring those dogs inside. I know of one cafe that advertises a dog night on the patio once a month where pets can dine outside with their owners.  There is a menu for the dogs that night.  I have not gone though. Dogs are not allowed on the public school property anymore since irresponsible people allowed their dogs to freely run on school property and not clean up after them.  These same people probably are the ones that do not pick up after their dogs on walks on public sidewalks and in public parks.

Same here! I don't know of ANY places I can take my dog that aren't pet supplies places, besides parks that allow dogs!

On our walk today, standing outside Petco, a young lady (20, maybe) is fussing around with crap in her H3. She has a small Shi-Tzu on a flexi-lead. With the dog not even pulling, she manages to drop the flexi. The dog didn't go far. But how negligent do you have to be when, in the prime of your health, you can't hold onto a plastic handle of a flexi on an 8 lb (if that) dog? You either have a way to hold onto that leash always or you shouldn't be out, imo. OTOH, maybe my view is skewed because of having a big strong dog that can run fast enough to get a ticket. I have my hand through the loop of a thick nylon 3 foot leash and you would have to remove my arm for me to loose control of that.

    Oh well, off my soapbox.

OH! My favorite is when a woman in her late 20's has a 150lbs dog on a flexi leash and lets him run off leash in the local school when he has no recall.

I was walking through the park when he came running at me full speed. If it had been anyone else but me, that dog would have probably scared the beejeezus out a person. The dog is friendly enough but has no training and is HUGE!  He looks like a bull mastiff mix. But the big problem is the owner refuses to recognize that her dog doesn't get along well with other male dogs. He's a rescue also so she didn't know his temperment and yet she still let him do what ever he wants.. *sigh*

*goes to join Ron on the side of the soapbox*

Just yesterday, I was in the grocery store and saw a Lhasa Apso in a shopping cart with a toddler - maybe 3 or 4? standing in the cart with the dog.  The toddler walks toward the back of the cart and deliberately STEPPED on the dog.  I gasped loudly twice as it was happening, I couldn't find words!  The dog yelped, the parents turned around and grabbed the kid out of the cart and he got a very firm talking to right away - and he started crying.

Good.  He should cry and feel bad.

I also don't think it's cool to bring dogs into the grocery store.  Other stores, fine, but grocery stores?

There's a used bookstore here called Bookmans that allows people to bring in dogs - even has DOGGY DAYS where they offer special treats and "stuff" for dogs.

I never thought of our area as pet friendly - guess I should be happy we have a few places other than Petsmart and Petco. :)

I do have to say I think taking pets into stores with food (and yes this includes Starbucks) is not cool - the health department can really get on them for letting dogs in that aren't service animals.  It's not that they are being unreasonable when they ask someone with a dog to leave.

Maybe its because of where I live but I have no desire to take my dogs to stores.  They have plenty of room here to run and romp around and we have lots of company visiting with there dogs.  Our friends almost never come without their dogs because we do have so much room and dogs for them play with.  My SIL tells me how guilty she feels if she does come without her dog because she loves it here so much.  I take my dogs in the car to run run errons, go to the car wash and everyday to pick my son up or drop off at school (we alternate) and every Halloween they come with us trick or treat,   We live where there are 5 state parks in my county and we love to go there and take them with us and they also come camping with us too.  Other than that they stay home.  Stores, book stores etc. not something I care to take them to.  They could go to petco but nah.

ETA: I work in the Hartz Industries building and everyone who works for Hartz brings there dogs, cats, hamsters - all pets are welcome. I ride inthe elevator with dogs everyday.   I don't work for Hartz but if I did - that is someplace I would love to bring my dogs is to work with me - how cool.

Yup, I used to work at a local coffee shop/bakery and people used to try to bring their dogs in all the time- even though we had a large "NO DOGS ALLOWED INSIDE" sign. We had no problem with people sitting outside on the patio with them, but not inside. There are very strict health laws against bringing pets near food, and I don't blame owners of businesses for not allowing it.

ETA, obviously service animals were always allowed inside.
