Shock Collar Recommendation?

What happens when the collar is taken off?? I have often heard dogs will only perform when the collar is on,so infact they arent as well trained as first thought.

That is why I made my dogs wear the collar every day for quite some time without using them. They are so used to the collars being on, that they have no idea they are the cause of the sensation when you do start using them. Now I hardly have to use them at all. Used properly, an E collar should not become a long term solution.

Fencing a dog in isn't really a solution when your on a large area of land unless you don't want much interaction with your dog.  That just means your leaving the dog behind in a little yard while you are gone the whole time.  Sometimes that's from sunrise to sunset.  Not a good life for the dog.  I got a dog so I could go places with it and have it with me out around the livestock not so it could sit behind a fence while I was off on my own.  I have a dog proof yard but it's mostly just used for when I give them bones to chew on and don't want to stand around watching them the whole time.  I can definitely see the use for an ecollar and even know a dog or 2 that might have needed one but I think if your starting with puppies you can achieve just as good if not better results with other methods.  Just dragging puppy around on a leash with you all day while it makes even simple chores quite a bit more difficult is highly effective at teaching them to stay close and not chase things.  For adult dogs it's not always that simple.  We've had some that nothing could stop them from getting to and chasing the livestock until 1 of the animals turned on them and ran them down instead.  The result though was a broken leg or broken ribs before they got the idea.  If nothing else an ecollar used correctly is at least better than the dog having to learn the hard way.  For me a leash has always worked fine and if I need both hands leashes can be tied to things including myself until the dog gets the idea.
