Excitment extreme & VERY good pups (Callie)

I am SO proud of 4 dogs -- they handled this SO well and were SOOOOO incredibly good to roll with what could have been a disaster.

We got home at 10:00 from the vet's tonight (Kee Shu and Billy acupuncture night and some supper) to the smell of gas.  Oh my -- whatta ker-fuffle!  HUGE gas leak -- we called Amerigas and they barely answered (on hold for an eternity -- and HEY I GOTTA LEAK Answer already!!!) -- had to call 911 and evacuate the house.   Fire Dept got here fast and they got the pilot light to the hot water tank turned off.

Big huge leak -- they couldn't get it to shut off -- some sort of 'overflow' valve that failed.  It's midnight and the fire department just left -- Amerigas FINALLY got here.  They said in 25 and 32 years of service (Amerigas guy and Fire Dept guy) that they'd never EVER seen this particular part 'fail'.

Sooooooooooooooo I have to have a whole new gas tank *again* (it's only 2 years old) -- not sure I trust them to secure my gates and start my tank, but I'll see what happens in the morning.  I shouldn't be too late -- we're just out a whole $600 load of gas I think -- *sigh* But at LEAST they didn't have to burn the whole darned thing off.  That would have taken another 2-3 hours.

But here we're sitting rolled out of the house with four dogs and the cockatiel.  Dripping rain ... finally got my wheelchair down to the road (firetruck in driveway -- and my yard is TOO soggy for me to step on ... ugh SO embarassing - I hate having to resort to the danged chair!)

But we're down at the street -- 2 humans and 4 dogs all watching 3 firetrucks, an ambulance (just in case, I guess) and the gas truck (Luna a bit crazed and barking some at the fire department guys who are running all over with hoses, flashlights and generally looking rushed and like something a dog oughta bark AT) but mostly SO good.

Billy (playing Mr. Perfect to ... perfection!!) just sat and watched it all.  He was on a loose leash.  He went up and sniffed Hootie (normally the bird is on top of their crates so they're all used to smells but not 'eye to eye';) and Hootie hissed and Billy said "OK -- I'll just step back!" (repeat same thing 5 minutes later with Luna).  Tink says "that thing hisses and makes noise I ain't goin CLOSE! NO WAY!!!"  Kee in my arms -- chilled out from acupuncture and she was "with" so she didn't care!

Luna was the only one who needed a close leash -- but of course she's the 'worrier' of the bunch.

Eventually they got it to abate enough to get the cars away from the house so then it's 2 humans, 4 dogs and a cockatiel in on PT Cruizer!!  LOL -- family togetherness?

The Amerigas guy finally toggled something up that got the leak to stop but we'll likely lose ALL that propane.

Tomorrow they have to replace the whole tank because of this one part.  *sigh*  200 gallons of propane -- coulda made us a big old explosion that could have sent us all to Kingdom come.  The Alpha of all Alphas was surely looking out for all of us tonight!!

Way more excitement than we wanted but it coulda been SO much worse.  As it was it turned out to just be a super good exercise in socialization and we think Hootie just plain had a grand time.  By the end of it in the cruizer, Hootie and Iw ere whistling a duet and the dogs were ignoring us!

Wow!!  Callie, what a scary ordeal.  So glad all of you are OK and nothing worse happened.  Heck of a way to spend the night, huh?  I noticed the time on your post was nearly 10 p.m. my time, so it must have been about 1 a.m. where you are. Give those well behaved puppers some tummy rubs and ear scritches. Smile

Yowsa Callie!  I am sure glad all of you are OK

and we lost a goo lot of propane a few months back and OUCH that hurt the budget Sad

Oh my gosh, Callie, how scary!!! I'm so glad you guys are okay, and were smart enough to evacuate ASAP. Was the part that broke managed by the gas company or by you guys - in other words, is there any way to get any of the money back? Maybe even homeowner's insurance?

OH MY GOSH! I'm glad all turned out well. You guys should have come over and we'd have had a sleepover!

Oh Callie!  Thank God everyone is ok and nothing blew!  How scary.

And GOOD JOB everyone.  I can just imagine my crew...it would have been hard to keep them quiet with that level of excitement going on.  You all did AWESOME!!!!

Wow - good dogs!  And I was just talking on another thread about how we train BEFORE the "tornadoes."

In this land of hurricanes and mega high deductibles, no -- we don't claim NUFFIN on insurance (or it gives them a loophole to cancel you - no way!).  It bites the wallet, yes, but we're all safe.

I haven't battled Amerigas yet and they are NOT my favorite people on the planet.  Hopefully they will change the tank today and give me gas.  It was a weird little valve that was supposed to 'protect' and obviously didn't.  So it's somehow translated that they have to change out the entire tank.

I'm just unbelievably thankful we HAD a late vet appt -- we came home and I smelled the gas (I'd smelled something earlier and just thot it was something foul that I couldn't 'find';) but David wanted to argue with me that it wasn't gas and I insisted it was.  He went to the tank and heard it 'hisssss' ... next time I'll skip calling the gas company and just do 911.  We could have blown skyhigh in the time it took them to get there.

Had I not been outside we wouldn't have found it.  The air's on so we wouldn't have smelled it til we were dead asleep (because the intake on the air is on the other side of the house and it would have hovered as a cloud).  But the first time the hot water tank flamed on it would have blown it up.

They all commented on how good the dogs were (except Ms. Mouth, Lunabella).  Given that I'm one dog over the legal limit in Altamonte, I'm VERY fortunate this went well.  Phew.

Wholey carp, Callie!  That's' way too much excitement for me & my pack.  I'm so glad that y'all got out safey & I'm so proud of your pack +bird.

OMG, Callie.  Thank God you guys were out of the house and not sleeping when all this happened!  It stinks you'll have to replace the propane but you are right, it could of been much worse.

Our new house has oil and to tell the truth I'm sort of relieved even though it's expensive.

But if the tank is under warranty cant you fight to have them reimburse you for the propane? Its worth a try. I would be very upset.....your losing money because of their faulty part.

Tell them SOME people would have just went to a motel and made them reimburse for that too. Some crazy people would have claimed stress to herself and animals.....I think you, the pups, and the bird handeled it exceptionally well.

Holy Hannah, Callie!  So glad you and everyone else are ok.  How stressful!  I think I would have had to leave with my dogs...they wouldn't have been impressed with firefighters in their yard.  At least Onyx wouldn't have.  Kudos to your crew!

Oo thats frightening! Glad you guys all got out okay!
    • Gold Top Dog

Wow - how scary !      I'm glad the Tiel made it out - birds can go so quickly with gas leaks (think canary in coalmine).

Good work to everyone.  Hopefully the whole mess is covered under warranty.   I know exactly what you mean about not making insurance claims --- they're way too fast to drop us !

There was a flock of angels over your home last night!  You were sooooo lcuky. Give all the critters a pat for me and each other a hug.
