    Upset at a puppy's predicament

I think that, before I joined this forum, this would not have upset me as much but here it is...

A colleague of mine has a family member that brought home a Siberian Husky pup at 10 weeks old.  My colleague has been sharing pictures and stories and they are all obviously very happy and enjoying the puppy, named Skyler.

Today I found out that Skyler has to be rehomed within 24 hours or they will be evicted.  It turns out that they rent their townhouse and didn't pay the $150 dog fee because they didn't have it, they have been hiding Skyler.  Today they got a notice that "Huskys are not allowed" and they are being fined $500 and must "get rid of" the dog within 24 hours or be evicted.

Frankly, I doubt that the owners of the townhomes have banned Huskies.  Probably this is a result of hiding the poor little guy.

So...if you know anyone in the Twin Cities, Minnesota area that would like a 20 week old Siberian Husky male, let me know.... ugh.

I feel bad for the poor puppy too! I hope he is rehomed into a nice new home. I wonder how your colleague thought he would be able to hide a Husky?  This is a costly mistake for them. I hope it is not so costly for the dog. Sending good vobes!

The only people I "know" in the Twin Cities area are on this forum.  I hope he can find a home soon.  Has she looked into Husky rescue?

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh no! that is sooo sad. I know my brother really really wants a husky puppy but we live in PA plus his g/f might hurt me if I got him one right now :)

I hope the puppy finds a home soon! That just goes to show, never ever hide an animal from a landlord, always check before adopting or buying!

This is really bothering me and I know the family is devastated at having to give him up.  A little planning and being prepared and honest with your landlord is soooo important!

This family could have avoided this heartache.

It is starting to look like Skylar will have to go to a rescue.  Too bad since the rescues are so busy with animals that are actually being mistreated and abused!

i'm at a loss......... i mean..... what did they expect?

that poor poor puppy :( is there any chance the breeder will have him back!?!?

    • Gold Top Dog

I'd say BREEDER - but that depends on how good a breeder it was.... so often its a less than reputable one.

This morning I was told that the owner does not want to give Skyler away but she can't afford to board him.  I was asked if I know anyone that would foster him so that they can go and play with him and take him to the park etc until they move in April and then take him back.

Huh.  Talk about having your cake and eating it too!

    • Gold Top Dog

Wow.  April is a pretty long time, especially if they want someone to foster "free".  I mean, they might be able to get someone if they pay for everything (food, vet, toys, treats), but that really is a lot to ask of someone for 8 months!  I agree, that seems like they want someone to handle their problems for them and then just step back in when it's convenient.

This is a really sad situation for Skyler, poor puppy.

They can't afford $150 townhouse fee.

They can't afford to board the dog.

They probably can't afford to neuter the dog, train the dog or vet the dog.

I would say they can't afford a dog - period!

    Ugh, how sad.

It has always surprised me how many people hide pets, keep pets where they aren't allowed, or don't notify landlords.  I'm WAY to paranoid for that!  I think a lot of places WILL enforce their rules and apply fines because if they don't, think of the message that sends to other tenants.  As strange as it seems to me, there ARE people who choose dwellings because they DONT want dogs or cats around and if they find out someone else is stretching the rules without a new written agreement or paying the fees....

Ironically, the last four places I've lived have either said "no pets" or had a limit but eventually caved for me.  Our current landlords said "no pets" but folded immediately when I offered and additional deposit and provided several references.  Not only that, but they let us add Coke AND gave me permission to get a puppy, I just have to add to my pet deposit.  My past two house landlords also said no pets but changed their mind for a second deposit.  In our apartment, they had a cat limit but the property manager made adjustments for us and even waived fees.  When we moved out we had to clean to get our deposits back and he said our apartment was the cleanest he had ever seen.  It really pays to be a diligent tenant.  Now I use him and my other landlords as references to vouch for the care of my pets.

Yes, but Liesje, you can do that because you are an intelligent and responsible person. Zip it!

You give me too much credit!  I think of it more as basic common sense!  If there's a rule, follow it.  If you don't like the rule, ask about changing it (IN WRITING), don't pretend it doesn't exist.
