had my first "breeding offer" ugh!

Scary, seriously.  I take Ari to work with me more often than not.  So I got stopped by someone who has "seen me around" and asked to breed her with his dog (a lab mix of some kind).  I told him she was going to be spayed soon and he said why would I do that since she was a good looking dog and an uncommon breed I could make good money off her!  UGH UGH UGH UGH UGH!

First of all I'm creeped out by this guy - b/c I have had issues with an ex stalking me in the past and I actually do not take kindly to men in general approaching me (abusive ex, bad experiences etc etc, I'm typically on guard).  Secondly UUUUUUGHHHHH by the breeding request.

I am proud of myself in that I didn't just walk away and/or blow up at him.  I explained as best as I'm able that she's pet quality, not show quality.  Dogs in shelters, overpopulation, puppy mills.  Offered if he had an email address I'd send him some great links regarding breeding, puppymills etc....I did as much education as I could, though he persisted I should at least "get one litter out of her".  At that point I walked away, when I could say no more.

Yes Ari is a beautiful puppy, but she will never ever ever ever ever ever EVER have puppies of her own.  NO THANK YOU!  There's so many reasons for this which you all know!!!  I'm just creeped out and will be on guard from here on out.  There isn't a huge problem with dog theft around here, but having Ari I do worry about someone snatching her.

I hate that you  have to be so guarded, but it sounds like you tried to educate the best you could.  Unfortunately so many people think the same way.   I have to admit that until the last 5 years or so, although we had rescues, I did not fully understand the urgency of the overpopulation problem.   Good for you to try to change the mind set of this person.  I guess that is how we do it, one person at a time.  My involvement in this forum has educated me and I try to reach out to others every chance I get.

How much of his offer do you think was flirting with you? Maybe he thought he'd flatter you by making that offer? A misguided attempt to get closer to you?

I'm glad you were able to stay calm and try to set him straight.  Since I've had Ole I've had a couple people mention breeding him, and I'm very happy to say that he is a rescued dog and is neutered. I also give them stink-eye at the same time. Big Smile

I had someone offer, after watching Maggie bark at squirrels in my backyard, to match his treeing fiest with Maggie (Ah bet they'd make some great squirrel dogs).  Maggie, my spitz something mix, you understand.

I suggested kindly that maybe it would be better to match his hunting dog to an actual hunting dog, so the puppies wouldn't be a disappointment.

"Oh, no, I know they'd be good - my dog's won a bunch of trials!"  Okay, let's talk about genetics.  Not all the puppies will be like Daddy, in fact there's a good chance NONE of them will be, since it's an outcross.

He persisted and I had to break it to him that Maggie was actually spayed.

I have this happen when I take Rex out.  He's a big Standard Poodle with unique coloring, and he's such a happy looking dog.  People are just drawn to him - they all want to 'feel his hair'.  And then I get all sorts of requests to use him for breeding, to all sorts of breeds.  Unreal.  I like to talk to people and try to educate them a bit, so I ask them about their own dogs and then I start bringing up things like genetic testing.  ,Most people don't even know what I'm talking about!  Tongue Tied  And who cares if they're a purebred of any quality - they're female, therefore we breed them, right?  Indifferent  I do try to educate as much as possible but I'm finding that I fight this general concensus is that if you have a poodle you need to breed it to some other breed to get a really cool doodle of some sort and make lots of money.

Hey - maybe it's me.  Maybe I'm not taking advantage of a great thing here - anyone got some cool looking dog to breed with my poodle???     We can make some bucks!!!

Poodle lover lol, what am I thinking I could be rolling in the dough!  Thankfully I haven't seen this guy around again.  Maybe it was just an excuse to hit on me, but it was creepy and like I said I don't take kindly to random men talking to me anyway.  I got someone else who asked why I wouldn't breed and they were more just interested in my reasons - and it turned into a really great conversation.  Too bad their dog was older and not keen on puppies or I would have loved to set up a play date!
