considering how much vacation time they get vs. us...I'll take that! Now if we can get the Public Transport and food/beer/wine...we'd be in business!

DH gets 28 days of paid vacation a year.  Now I just need to convince him we should use some of it!

You can always move, it would save time, since Europe has already pretty much arrived there, and we still have a ways to go.

I don't understand the hoopla for a few reasons. And I have a question.

My reasons, on any given holiday, both paid and unpaid, millions of American's still work. We no longer close everything to observe holidays, all for what? money?  I remember as a child NOTHING was open on Christmas day, Thanksgiving, Easter, New Years Day, and the like, now just about everything is. Yes some of them are paid at a higher rate, but if holidays are so important to us as Americans, then why do we do this? I understand some need to work, hospitals, emergency workers, police and fire, but honestly, is the world going to come to end if they closed down gas stations, big box stores, the grocery?

Every country, including our own, has pro's and con's. I personally think we, as Americans, work to damn much, don't spend enough time enjoying the lives we are working for, and just plain are to dang conditioned to step back. I blame cell phones!Stick out tongue

My questions in this, what if they had decide to switch the holiday for some other American holiday? Like ...oh...Flay day? maybe Armed Forces day? let's not forget the Irish and say St. Patrick's day.......

Would you have been just as upset if they had chosen one of those days?

ETA: And what is so bad about becoming like Europe may I ask? A good portion of everyone that walks our ground had someone who came here from Europe, bringing with them many of our customs, beliefs and traditions.

Well I would suggest you read the article I posted, that will give you some insight into why I think becoming like Europe is bad although that does not by any manys cover all the reasons.

When I was a kid we didn't have to wait for a holiday for everything to be closed - we only had to wait six days. Everything ....  gas stations, grocery stores, even a lot of restaurants were closed every Sunday. They did keep the theater open for Sunday afternoon matinees, but that was it. Have to say I prefer it the way it is now ... almost everything is open 24/7.

Isn't the European unemployment rate somewhere around 12 perecnt?

Don't the have some of the MOST restrictive dog laws in the world?

And we whine about the high gas prices here!

I have read numerous posts stating that we're all just a bunch of intolerant ninnies but the last time I checked, we did not have laws governing whether or not people may wear religious symbols/items of clothing in public school.

Our movies are also much better.....

I do realize that it is very fashionable to want to make the US like Europe, but I've never been a big fan of following the trends.

For my family, Labor Day is a time to gather.  So while some may not care a whole lot about it and find it trivial, I am missing out on family time.  Thank goodness my company doesn't have union silliness going on for this kind of policy to slip it's way in.

The thing is that I wouldn't think it were such a big deal if they allowed the employees to choose......

You missed the point.......union workers lose Labor Day and have to follow a muslim holiday......how sweet (barf)

Uhm... EVERYONE has to follow Christian holidays! I don't hear many people complaining about that. Why can't we follow ONE Muslim holiday??

I did read the article, I even watched the video. Some was heartbreaking, some was plain extreme, and the rest of it is PC, which I don't agree with most of the time.

Labor day was intended to honor the worker, it is celebrated both here and Canada on the same time frame, I believe it is May day in Europe? These people are workers, the majority of them wanted to celebrate a religious holiday over a holiday celebrating the work they do. I also read that article. Personally I blame Tyson. I am going to guess that the number of people that needed/wanted that day off stopped production enough that they pushed for it. From the article I'm guessing the number of people that will be missed on Labor day is much lower and would not stop production. So, once again it comes down to the dollar making decisions, and pushing reform,  not religious beliefs. They offered the choice and the majority ruled.

And FWIW, if Tyson chicken is lower than any other chicken at the time I need to buy it, I'm going to buy it.

Oh, your family doesn't do anything for Christmas for the kids then?

Our company does not allow Easter off and it never has (and yes this does make a difference because the production workers do work Sundays depending on their schedules).

We are an industrial company like Tyson (but we do different things) and we get: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.  Out of those 7 days only one can be loosely considered a religious holiday, and I would argue that most people do not treat Christmas as the birth of Christ but rather it has morphed into something else, so I not sure if can even be considered religious anymore.

In my other job before this I had to work any holiday I was asked because horses to not take a holiday from eating.

So which Christian holidays are you being forced against your will to observe again?

Labor Day is a religious based Holiday?

Labor Day originated during the labor union movements of the 1800s as a way to celebrate the social and economic advancements of the United States and pay tribute to the driving force of our economy—the American laborer.
