    Need some Healthy Foods/Recipes/Meals

Ok guys. Today is day 1 of my diet and I am sticking to it! The reason my dieting never works is because I get bored with eating the same things all the time. Here is my list of healthy foods. If anyone has anything else that has worked and is good whether it be healthy food, recipes or meals post it here! Anything would be helpful for me :)

    Canned soup

    Non-fat plain yogurt

    granola

whole wheat english muffins with natural peanut butter

Fruit and Veggies with non-fat dressing or basalmic vinageriette dressing

    Chicken

    Non-fat plain yogurt

Blech! You coudn't get me to touch non-fat plain yogurt with a 10 foot pole! (Sorry if you like it alot!!)

I just started WW, if you go on their website there's a ton of great recipes.

Also, I eat a lot of cereal....Special K and Kashi. Sometimes for breakfast, sometimes for a a late snack. I like garden salad alot, so I have that for lunch or dinner a couple times a week and LOAD it up with veggies and the top it with some lean turkey or chicken, with light Italian dressing. Also, I like wonder bread whole wheat "white" bread, so I eat 2 slices of that with some shaved turkey, a tiny bit of light ranch dressing, and a lot of lettuce, thats a good one for me. I try to eat "normal" foods that I know I can stick with, like I could not stick to too "diet-y" foods, you know? Also WW ice cream is AWESOME!!! Just be careful you don't eat the entire box! LOL! I also eat almonds (non-salted). And pickles, not the sweet kind, but a couple of the kosher dill spears make a good snack.

Also, watch out for granola's....many have ALOT more calories than you'd expect.

Just try sticking to lean protiens (chicken, fish, turkey) and alot of fresh fruit and veggies, and minimal carbs. I always try to pump a meal up with alot of veggies (but I like veggies alot).

I have to say working out, breaking a mean sweat, has IMO been the best thing for me.

Thanks for all those recommendations, I completely forgot about Turkey, love turkey! I am going food shopping today so I am going to write everything down that I want.

I workout 5-6 days a week, for about an hour a day if not longer and without the dieting to go along with it, its not doing a thing for me.  I have a slow metabolism unfortunately, and I'm not fat but I could definitely lose some weight plus I want to eat better. I remember your post about your DH, mine is the same way and I just can't eat like he does anymore. I was very thin when I met him, then when we started living together and eating the same crap he does all the time, it really got to me.

That happened to me too!  DH eats so differently than I do but I adapted to his style...ooops.

One of the healthiest things to do is to determine what is a healthy portion size for you.  If you don't have a kitchen scale - get one.  You will soon realize that that breast of chicken that you prepare in a healthy manner is actually twice the size of a healthy portion.

Although I'm a little over my target weight right now, I plan to lose a good 20 or so in the next few days.  I have been really eating better lately.  The latest trick I have incorporated into my arsenal is to shop the right part of the grocery store.  I go in on the Bread Side, shop that, then the produce section, the back wall, which is the dairy section, and down the meat side.  So basically the outside of the store.  I then quickly whip through the aisles for anything I really need, like PB or pancake mix or whatever.  I do have kids so canned soups and alphaghetti come in handy, but I hardly ever eat it myself.

For a while I was trying a new veggie every week.  But since I'm up here in Canada, the selection isn't huge so I've pretty much exhausted that.  I did find a few new favorites though.  I love asparagus, which I thought I hated.  I also love spaghettie squash, again, thought I hated it.  The squashes are a great substitute for carbs for me.  They give me the same full feeling, without the heavy feeling.  So quite often when the kids and Tyler are having spaghetti, I'll bake up a squash and sub that in for me.

Also for your breads and cereals, always opt for WHOLE or brown.  But I'm sure you know that.   Rice is the same way.  Don't be afraid to cut way back on the carbs.  Most of us eat way more than we need.  1 slice of bread is a serving.  But we eat two on a sandwich.  1/2 cup of macaroni is a serving, but we eat 3 cups at a meal.

You might also think about signing up at Sparkpeople.com

I'm Kalinkalesmom over there.  They have some great tools for tracking weightloss, meals, exercise etc.  Plus some great message boards for support.  I've been inactive since I found out I was pregnant, cause I went to a sister site called Babyfit, but Spark is pretty good.  Its all free.  Oh, they also have tons of recipes for healthy eating.

Make sure you check sodium on canned soups! Some have way too much.

I highly recommend almonds, or other nuts and granny smith apples with peanut butter as a good, healthy snack

You KNOW...I am not a healthy eater. BUT...isn't stir fry healthy? I make one with just cooking spray and broccoli and skinless chicken breast...surely that's not totally bad maybe? Of course I slather it with TONS OF SAUCE, and eat like two bowls of it over rice...because well, I'm me...but if you do a dash of soy sauce or terriyaki and some ginger...might be pretty good too?

I'm not sure if you like fish, but I recently became a huge tilapia fan.  Sam's Club sells these bags of individually wrapped filets of tilapia, and it's SO good and really versatile!  My two favorite preparations are grilled tilapia and tilapia tacos.  For the grilled tilapia, I rub a citrus spice mixture into the filet, and then DH grills it up for me (alongside his cheddar bratwursts, lol).  For tilapia tacos, you rub more spices into it, and then fry it in a cast-iron pan (both sides, until the spices caramelize and turn dark).   You then chop the tilapia up, and add it to your taco.  My tacos are usually comprised of a pita with lettuce, tomato, cabbage, fresh green beans, and some salsa.  It's really tasty!

A good trick for me has been to eat a small garden salad before every meal.  No meat, just veggies, and it fills me up before the main course so I don't eat as much.  I would also suggest investing in good spices.  They help perk up lean cuts of meat or fish, and are spectacular when grilling or making marinades.

    Good luck!

    My staples were

    • low fat 1% cottage cheese
    • sugar free low fat yogurt cups (60 cals each)
    • granola bars (whatever was 100 cals or less)
    • 94% fat free microwave popcorn (whole bag is less than 150 cals!)
    • 0 cal, sugar free raspberry lemonade
    • Progresso soups (I like pea & ham and New England clam chowder)
    • watermelon, strawberries, bananas, Clementine oranges...

Ah! That's EXACTLY what happend to me. I was thin when we met (not skinny), but when we moved in together....wow, did I gain, and he stayed the same! Not fair! I just had to set rules for him (at least for now), write those rules and put them on the 'fridge.

I do really like tilapia! I make herb crusted tilapia and it is just sooo good! I should try grilling some, sounds good! I just went shopping and bought alot of fruits and veggies, chicken to grill for salads and stuff for sandwiches with whole wheat bread.  I'll be eating a ton of salads too.
