Our evening walk was filled with firsts for Maze. We went to the duck pond today again and as we were walking around a corner, I noticed Maze's posture change and she tensed up. I had headphones on so I couldn't hear around me. I reeled Maze in and put her in a heel just in time to see 2 young kids, under the age of 10 atleast!, trying to hold back a Chow mix. No parent in sight! I pulled out one headphone so I could listen and about 5 - 10 feet away their dad (I'm assuming) comes waltzing up. Doesn't even offer the help the kids! Just says to them, they've got to keep a better hold on the dog. The young boy was laughing the entire time and was just about to drop the leash completely when I stated Maze is not friendly, she will bite. Well I swear the kid's grin got bigger! So after they got the dog under control ( I wanted to make sure the dog wouldn't chase after us when we left) I turned and went a different way. No growling or snarling or barking from Maze. NOTHING!
She just sat patiently at my side.
One gold star there.
As we walked away, we came to a bridge that we've never walked across and Maze had never felt anything like it before. So I slacked the leash, told Maze to Keep Up and walked with confidence across the bridge. Maze hesitated once, briefly, then trotted happily across with me. No fear at all.
Second gold star.
We came around to the part of the pond where the ducks are. Maze had never seen ducks up close before so we stopped so she could investigate. These ducks are pretty tamed-ish. They see people and assume they have food so they flocked to us. Maze was having great fun greeting the ducks nose to nose until she decided one Mallard looked like it wanted to wrestle. She play bowed to the duck and kinda jumped forward with her front paws. Well the duck didn't see it as play and lunged at her aiming for her nose! I nearly died laughing. She took it in stride and backed off.
Third gold star.
One the way home there was a couple walking a spaniel of some sort. I didn't really want to push my luck with Maze so I went to the middle of the street (no cars) to avoid them. As we passed by the spaniel lunged suddenly and started barking and snarling, pulling at the end of it's leash. It just went NUTS! Maze lunged sideways to meet the dog (unfortunately for her, she had to pass right in front of me. Lol) But she wasn't barking. She didn't make a noise and with a firm tap on her butt with my knee, she came back and focused on me. We continued on our way and she was happy and pranced all the way home.
Fourth gold star.
So now she's sleeping soundly on the couch, cuddled up to Dad after receiving her cookies for a job well done. And of course I praised the CRAP out of her once she focused on me again.
Overall I'd say it was a good walk with a bunch of new experiences.
