The fact stands that China is in partnership with Cuba

    Umm . . . I think we're still waiting for a credible source on that "fact" . . .

This article talks of "PLANS" to drill and was written May 2006, well over 2 years ago. Apparently it never happened. Yet anyways.

Okay.  Let me walk you all through this.

The source for the CNN article (above) was a New York Times article.  That NYT article has been debunked by the FactCheck article, as well as by Vice President Cheney's office.

For the life of me I can't come up with any reason that Cheney would deny that China was/is in partnership with Cuba in exploring/drilling for oil if in fact it were really happening.

I also don't see what it has to do with anything, as Cuba certainly has the right to partner with anyone they want, and to do whatever they want in their own waters.

This snippet states that there is a partnership:

And at the end of George Will's June 17 column, he issued a correction:

Will: In a previous column, I stated that China, in partnership with Cuba, is drilling for oil 60 miles from the Florida coast. While Cuba has partnered with Chinese companies to drill in the Florida Straits, no Chinese company has been involved in Cuba's oil exploration that close to the United States.

Just to give a heads up most POS cars would not pass emission testing. If a car fails emission testing it doesn't run efficiently enough.

LOL come on now Snow as you mentioned NC requires an emission test and there are more POS cars on the roads here than anywhere else I've lived (8 states & 2 countries) Nary a day goes by where I don't shake my head in disbelief at the jalopies bumbling down the road, usually not in any particular lane and it was just as bad or worse in the mountains.

Now more importantly let's all remember that political discussions get heated very quickly and this time there race and a muslim SOUNDING name thrown in the mix. Be respectful of others and their beliefs.  Be you Republican./Democrat or other BE RESPECTFUL.

There is no need to belittle people or beliefs you don't agree with - rise above your emotional response and respond with your brain.

Honestly I am astounded how many of you have stated that the fact his middle name is Hussein bothers you and recalls 9/11 for you.  Seems a long stretch and huge generalization.  I've never quite understood not evaluating the person in front of you as an individual.  Then again I have been a teacher and therapist for so long that to do anything other than take each person as who they are is impossible.  We get all worked up because someone states all GSD's are aggressive or will 'turn' yet it's OK to lump everyone with the name Hussein together or all Arabs are terrorists.

I also feel sad that in a country that claims religious freedom - there isn't and people are persecuted for not being or looking Christian.  The US is supposed to be a country with unparalleled acceptance, it isn't.

Those of you that are Americans do you not feel that a major part of the American ethos is tolerance?

Cut off year, if I am not mistaken is 1996, anything older than 1996 doesn't require an emissions test.

True. Big Smile If we're talking about American cars, anything made back in 1996 or earlier would have long since stopped running.

but it IS racist and bigoted to judge someone on their name alone

And you missed my point and got your drawers in a bunch. Obama might make a good president but I'm not all that sure on his energy policy which is a prime concern to me. If we don't get energy costs under control, we could go under. And you don't know me but I am not racist. If you only knew where I have been and whom I have known in my life. But that's okay. See how a statement gets taken out of context?

And, for what it's worth, I have been a victim of racism, too. Yeah, a big white guy like me. And no, your relative is not a terrorist and your being melodramatic because of what someone thought about my having misgivings because of a name. I could care less about Obama's name other than it was something to get over at first. I get it that he just happens to have that name and doesn't specifically practice muslim teachings. And has never been associated with or linked with an terrorist activity.

I am more offended by the fact that he wouldn't honor the flag. But not one person here has addressed that besides me. And you can call me any name in the book and it's not going to change the fact that not honoring the flag chaps my hide. I did mention earlier that his point about tire inflation is a good idea to practice, even if his statement was overreaching or inaccurate. But that got lost in the line of people waiting to call me a racist because I honestly admitted that his name caused me concern for emotional reasons of my own.

I also stated that he is weak on energy and I also said that so is John McCain. As per another thread, I would rather have had the chance to vote for Condoleeza Rice but she's probably a little too smart to run for president, even though I think she's got what it takes. I'm just not totally enthralled with McCain's campaign so far, aside from the fact that he is forever honorable for his service to our country. And I don't know what Obama stands for, besides "change." At least I knew the directions Clinton would go, even if I didn't agree with her plans.

You know, what, I think we all need a little lightening up!  Come on everybody sing it with me!!!

*sings noisily* Every one's a little bit racist, it's trueeeeeeeeeeee!  Yeah everyone is just about as racist as youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!  If we all could just admit, that we are racist a little bit, and everyone stopped being so PCeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!  Maybe we could live in harmonyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!

    Are we better now?

I have to be honest, I know a number of non-Christians and they are hardly persecuted.  Actually, in my experience, people treat you like a weirdo if you are too "openly" Christian (this goes for both school and work).  On this board my experience has been that people tend to be negative towards Christians, because, you know, we think every one else is going to hell, we use our religion as a crutch, we all are right wingers, we all hate gay people, we all worship Bush, we all think we're better than every one else, we all try to convert every one, we are really into a 2000 year old book, other Christians did bad things to the Native Americans back before we were born and this is apparently our fault, blah-blah, blah-blah, blah.

Just throwing that out there-it would be good to remember that religious tolerance works both ways......

Ya know, the only race I watch anymore is the Iditarod. Sometimes the TT 2000 on the Isle of Man (motorcycle race). It's amazing to watch the guys pop a wheelie over a hill at 120 mph and then have to hard brake into a turn at the bottom of the hill. That takes some nerve.

I am still confused by why it is *specifically* racist to use Obama's middle name.  My impression was that the name was repeatedly mentioned to link him with the former dictator of a mostly Muslim country, but Muslims can come in any race--and Obama's not a Muslim, so it's moot anyway.

Maybe I am missing something glaringly obvious, but what the heck does the name Hussein have to do with being black???

It's not about being black, it's about being Muslim.  For me (and I think many here) ethnic discrimination and racial discrimination are one in the same.

I'm still confused why anyone would refer to him by his middle name for ANY reason other than to draw attention to the fact that it's a "Muslim" name.

If it's not about his race than it is not racist.  It could be discrimination, bigoted, etc, but not racist.  If you (collective) are going to criticize people for using his name than fine, I think we should just be clear of what we are accusing people of, that's all.  Calling ti something it's not just further clouds the issue.....
