petsmart encounter (long sorry)

it is almost like an impulse buy. maybe the person who takes the dog will keep her, love her, and treat her well her entire life. but maybe the person would be droppping the pup off at the shelter in a week or a month because they werent ready for raising a pup or because it grew up or whatever reason.

there is no way to know because the lady wasnt getting any background info on potential adopters.

Absolutely correct.  Generally, when the puppy is in hands of the lady breeder or PS customer, the clock stops.  When the puppy enters the shelter world the clock starts ticking and with each day of growth, it is less likely the dog will be adopted.   I say generally because it will be a very lucky ;puppy that will be admitted into "committed to adoption" shelter or foster home.  Sad situation but true.

I saw some people in petsmart doing that once too.  They were a nice looking, young couple and said that a stray dog had puppies under their porch.  They said they were keeping at least 1 (they had 3 left) but wanted to find homes for the other two.  I said I was sorry, but I had my hands full at the moment with 4 kids and a puppy at the time, and they said that if they didn't find a home for them, they'd probably just keep them all.  I don't think they were trying to do anything wrong, and they had a whole cart full of toys, food and a big crate, so I just think they brought them in hopes that someone would fall in love.  Maybe the lady was trying to do the same thing???

once again not tarring every shelter with the same brush, but the one in the nearest city where i just moved from only required a home address and proof that you lived there.... there was another shelter that required just a wee bit more info than that, and then you have the rescue GROUPS that require background and home checks, fenced yards, animal/kid compatability..... now what are the odds of the puppy ending up at a rescue or shelter if it gets dropped off by its new family? and what are the odds that it will end up in a bad shelter? And if it ends up the shelter and is lucky enough to be adopted, who is to say that those new owners wont just send it back, abuse it, neglect it, or give it away in the same fashion as the original owner? a lot of those people you see on animal cops live in nice houses with fenced yards, or they dress in clean clothes, speak well, and seem to be respectable, and yet there they are getting arrested for animal abuse.
flip a stupid coin! not one of us here can say any thing for sure on what will or can happen. we have no solid facts, we're all just guessing and yapping about common worst case scenarios.
if the woman sends the puppies to the pound then it is no different than if its new owner sends it to the pound after a few days. it will eventually end up in the pound and its hopeless so just put it to sleep and be done with it......
lets all just be negative and assume that everyone giving away free puppies is scum and doesnt care about them, and that the people who take these free puppies are all neglectful ignoramuses who will eventually get rid of or abuse the puppies in some way.
there are no good people in this world anymore so its useless to try and help others or educate people. why bother

of course i hope you all realise that i am being facetious....
why must we assume the worst ALL the time? the reason why i play devil's advocate so often in this place is because its so bloody depressing to hear people assume the worst case scenario ALL THE TIME.... i get enough of that just talking to my mom.
i know you cant just go skipping around picking daisies and pretending the world is perfect..... but jeez! maybe in some places it's the next best thing to perfect?

the biggest problem (or at least one of the problems) with this is... it is almost like an impulse buy. maybe the person who takes the dog will keep her, love her, and treat her well her entire life. but maybe the person would be droppping the pup off at the shelter in a week or a month because they werent ready for raising a pup or because it grew up or whatever reason.

    I DO understand this!
However....if it gets taken to a shelter...sits there with the many many other dogs... it seems that there is a lot less chance of someone coming in to give THAT dog a home...maybe there are a lot more cuter,,,nicer dogs to compare with.
And if the person that took the dog at PS..ends up dropping it off at the shelter anyway.... I guess it did'nt make any difference. But there is a good chance that the person that took the dog at PS will keep it and love it.
Even though I would wish the lady would take more time and try to find the perfect owner for that puppy....no one has convinced me that the pup would be better off in a shelter than being given to someone at PS who decides he wants it.
I don't know,,, maybe I am not seeing something that you guys see!

Dyan, thats because there is no way it would be better in a shelter as opposed to going home with a PS customer. that customer is in a pet store because he or she has a pet already. some people like me would have no hardships with making a fast decision to take home a puppy in a heart beat despite the animals i already have. the more the merrier is how i see it.

its better than sitting out in front of walmart with a puppy. THAT would be an impulse buyer.... it's pay day, you're just off from work, have a pack of kids fresh out of school for the weekend, everyone is hyper and you just want to get in and get out with groceries... but then you see this pathetic little puppy..... and so. do. your. kids. no one has convinced me that the pup would be better off in a shelter

i was never advocating that she should take the dogs to the shelter. i only wish she would be a little more selective in her "adoption" process. [:)]

but then you see this pathetic little puppy..... and so. do. your. kids.

and people dont take their kids to petsmart? the people who she was talking to when we left had 2 kids in tow trying their best to persuade mom to bring the dog home.

it may not be an impulse buy in the sense that money changed hands, but going into a store to buy dog food and coming out with a puppy seems like an impulse decision. how much thought did the taker put into the decision? maybe the person taking the dog had only ever had fish as pets and knows nothing about how to care for a dog? raising a puppy is a lot of work even after you have done your research and feel prepared for the task.

once again with the worst case scenario and "its all hopeless" way of thinking.
maybe that person who has only ever owned fish is willing to do everything that it takes to raise a puppy. maybe if he brings this new species home it will change his life forever and for the better. maybe the dog will save his life some day, or pull him out of a deep morbid depression.

i'm not going to try to defend my opinions any further.

thanks to everyone who made suggestions on how to deal with the situation if it arises in the future.

I hope you don't take the discussion as a negative... I think we all respect eachothers opinions.... and for me, I have never rescued, fostered or even bought a dog (for that matter)   My other two dogs I have owned were given to me from a litter that people were trying to find homes for.  I took Bubblegum as the breeder no longer could use her.  Each dog that came in my home was the queen of the dogs....in their day.   Any pet I brought home would also be treated that way.  I guess because of it... I feel that most people will treat their pets the same.  I do know better...I see people where I work that have problems and lean toward giving their pets up. I do my best to make them realize that we all go thru the "growing pains" of pups.....and new pets...and we get thru it.  But I know some still give them up.

I would have said Miss/Mrs/Ms you do know that their are 10's of thousands of pets up for adoption every day.  And by the way did you know that spay/neutering is free at the pound?
