What should I think of her actions?

It sounds, to me, like she was almost startled. I know bitches being in season throws everything off... not looking forward to that, with my puppy. A good friend of mine has multiple, intact bitches, and the whole house is thrown off when somebody's in season.... My spayed bitch has reacted strangely to bitches in season. They smell SO FUNNY!

What do you mean what happens when they are crated downstairs. They don't get any sort of extra or special treatment really.

The sentence I was referring to:

"Which could make sense as normally I put strange/stray/visiting dogs in the big crate in the bathroom and my own dogs have a room upstairs. "

There must be some set pattern for newbies -- and likely they may seem to get extra attention OR that they are somehow weaker or inferior?

Think carefully about your pattern with newbies -- it may give you some insight on what this other female "assumed".  I'm also completely convinced some dogs can truly be a bit "passive-aggressive" with another dog in a crate. I don't have time to explain now, but may later.

Here is what happened last time. I had my FILs dog in there for the night. He was outside most the day as he is high driven dog that gets really nutty unless he can be playing. He is a people loving dog like any good Pit Bull but he can take them or leave em when it comes to play. He will literally play and play all day on his own. He will play somewhat with other dogs, maybe a person a bit but would rather go off on his own to play with his toy (mainly basketball) by himself for endless hours of enjoyment. At night sleep in the crate, in the day outside playing. The dog before that I had, the one holding for the owner as it was loose. The dogs never saw of it being in there, as it was just a few hours that night before they came to pick up the dog. I had my friends dog there for a day (she's pretty large female 55lbs bigger then my girls) and she slept in that crate, then the next day I let her out once they stopped disliking the smell of her and I don't think I gave her any special attention. I just let her flow with the others.

Maybe the inferior would be on target. An outside pack member would be unwanted and also be the low one on the totem pole, so that would be seen as a dog to put in their place or attack?

Ok I was just remembering this she passed the door a couple times before this with her submissive behavior, the one she does when she wants to do something bad but knows she can't/shouldn't do it I guess. Like if she isn't supposed to get a certain toy without being told she can have it, she will look at it, walk by it, but will have her head down, ears back, sad, hurt look on her face. Like woe is me, I'm not doing nothing bad, don't look at me, ect. The same type of look/behavoir when you correct her, like if she wants to chase a bunny and I say leave it, she does that same thing.
