Poor Baby Squirrel..... at least their leave it's are solid.

A baby squirrel must've been blown out of its nest last night when we had heavy thunderstorms roll through.  The boys were very very interested in something lying on the ground and that's never good so I gave them the "Leave it" command and Woobie instantly returned to the deck (yay!).  Indie was more conflicted, so he decided he'd carry the poor hairless thing (eyes weren't even open yet) over to me.  He didn't understand why I gave him the "Leave it" again, but he did drop it, ohhhh he so didn't want to, you could just see the confusion in his eyes, he finally did leave the poor creature on the ground and return to the deck.  There were no visible injuries on the little thing so they hadn't been biting on it or anything, I'm honestly surprised they didn't eat it, but I put it in the woods outside the fence.  Once they were let back out, Indie canvassed the yard FOREVER looking for it.  He was so gentle picking it up to bring it to me, I honestly think he was trying to bring it to me to fix or something.  Poor little squirrel.  Sad

Good for them to have left it when you asked.

I did not have time for a "Leave it" with Flem a couple of days ago but she gave me a good "Drop it" (not on my feet, Flem, please) when she snatched a baby robin from a bush. Poor little robin had to be finished off (darn, Flem !) because he clearly had been punctured thru and was in pretty bad shape. It's the second one she manages to catch this season but the first one was way older, less hurt, and was able to fly away when we released him a few houses down.

Good Boys!  Poor Indie didn't know what to do with it...so he brought it to you.  He said "fix it, its broke."

Buddy, a long time ago, brought me a little tiny bunny with the same kind of expressions.  I was amazed that my 'big murdering of most critters' Buddy had such a soft mouth.  Not a scratch on the bunny...and he placed it ever so gently at my feet.  I had seen where he picked it up from, so I just put it back and gave them my version of leave it..."not for you."  I'm sure mama bunny moved her baby after that.  Huh?

I can't make any guarantees about what they'd do with running, moving creatures but we've had good luck with "Leave it's" on our walks and those durned squirrels who just sit in the path giving them the evil eye daring them to chase them.  Super Angry

This is the 2nd baby squirrel and one mole they've gotten.  The other 2 I think the neighborhood cat got (it seems to like leaving me presents!) but they both left it alone when I told them to and Indie always seemed like he wanted me to fix it, bringing it towards me and acting confused when I told him to drop it.  My softie boy.  Embarrassed
