    rwbeagles-Eek! Elias FELL on Cleo!

talk about crazy moments. I went to get the mail...for both Cleo and my 4y/o son the opening of the front door is EXCITING! Eli wasn't in the room but he has "Door-dar" so I guess he was hot on my heels. Cleo always goes to the door then lays down til I come back in. So I get the mail come back up the drive JUST in time to see my son OPENING THE DOOR....ack! thinking escaping dog...I rush back up...

I grab the door which is open a good crack now...put my body in front and my son's face is trying to push thru...the door won't open ANY wider...WHY? Cleo's BUNS are in the way...she's curled right behind it (swings inward). I am telling my son "NO NO..back up Eli...go back in the house..." He gets tangled in Cleo's hind legs and WHOOMP...falls RIGHT ON TOP OF HER....OMG!

Now I still cannot open the door more than this crack because Cleo is there and now has my 57lbs son on top of her. I am envisioning him being chewed up..I mean "I" would bite the kid if he plopped on top of me like that! Cleo....simply wriggles out from beneath him..tail wagging and he gets to his feet...NOW I can open the door...

OHHHhhh man...let me tell you the temperament on this dog is amazing. All she did was slide out from under him and she was not even afraid....just had her happy "oh...you're back home..." face on...

ay ay ay...I lost minimum 5 years on this one!

OK Not funny to watch but ind of funny to imagine Smile  Good girl Cleo!

Bugsy has taken some accidental abuse and is completely unfettered too - these big ones are pretty rugged LOL

Now, let me say that my kids are nice and very dog savvy.  But PJ has his moments and Joe is a total klutz.  And Lynn has a habit of being underfoot at all times.  I suspect you get the picture.  Poor Lynn's been stepped on, clobbered across the face and butt with various objects, ridden like a horse (since she's not full size this results in Lynn and kid in a tangle on the floor), dragged by the ears for a convenient kiss, and laid on affectionately.  PJ will snuggle up to her on the couch near bedtime and go to sleep, and she won't even move when she hears me start distributing dinner.

Now that she's nearing full size and her coat is growing out in its adult form, my thought on her mix is Aussie/Leo/Golden.  I'll have to get pics of her latest look soon.  I just realized my most recent ones are almost a couple months old!

Oh gosh, dogs do more to eachother wrestling then that, LOL! Good thing it wasnt one of your smaller dogs though, ha ha!

Now I dont condone rough play between kids and dogs but when Rory was about 5 months old I walked in to see my 10 year old brother throwing a blanket over her body, covering her head and then rolling with her in a alligator death roll. I tell you my heart stopped in my chest. So she was covered, restricted and being rolled around on the floor.

So as I'm having a talk with him about how innapropriate it is Rory is flinging the blanket at him, puppy play bowing and doing her damndest to get his attention. She's running around the room, grabbing toys and tossing them at him......oy vey!

So again, while I dont condone it I think to a certain extent the dogs are expected to have a high tolerance for children. For example growing up we KNEW better then to go near a dog while it was eating BUT that dosnt mean the dog should guard its food. Its respect on both parts. Our house dog growing up, Bruno would ONLY growl at my dad if eh bothered him but not us kids but that didnt mean he didnt see my dad as pack leader.....does that make sense? He knew Dad was messing with him to test him versus us kids who are kids. Its the same with coyote packs and lion packs. A wolf may bite or lash out at a offending dog while its eating while a cub or pup will either get a warning or be allowed to go ahead.

I'm not going against what you are saying because strict doggy manners are essential for every kid but I'm not surprised by Cleo's reaction. She's a lover of her pack!
