Flea stuff question

    Flea stuff question

Do your animals freak out when you put flea liquid on them? Today's Advantage day, and it's such a PITA because every last one of them HATES it, and either runs from me, or tries to eat me. Lucifer's the only one who's halfway decent about it, and even he hates it and avoids me if he can. Cherokee slouches, with her ears plastered to her head, her tail in between her legs, and tries to run.. Jaz cowers and pees. Tiger-Lily takes two people, and she hisses and growls the whole time.. Kovu I have to corner and then he acts like I'm murdering him. And I don't even attempt Taz anymore, because she's hardly ever around anyway (my aunt's outdoor cat), and when I can find her, she seriously tries to attack me for putting it on her.  It makes me dread and avoid putting this crap on them, since I already hate the idea of pouring pestcides on their necks, especially when the package says "avoid contact with skin" Angry, but now Cherokee is miserably itchy, with a balding tail. Sad I don't know what else to do... I can't imagine this reaction is normal, but then why does every last one of my animals have it? Can they really all be sensitive to the Advantage?

Pirate doesn't mind it being put on, but he doesn't like feeling 'cornered' and I have to hold him to part his fur, so that's uncomfortable for him. Next time I get flea stuff I think I might get the Frontline spray.

Can't they just lick that off? That's my worry there...I don't think I have one animal that won't lick it if they can. Plus I'm pretty sure they'd all flip at being sprayed with something. Sigh... I'd try Frontline drops, see if that makes a difference, but I seriously can't afford it. I use Advantage because I can buy the tubes for big dogs and measure it out onto all of them..so I pay for 2 tubes (i.e. pay for my two animals) a month, and get all 6 animals (the other 4 who aren't mine but wouldn't get it every month if I didn't buy it and do it).

Hm...I dunno. From what I understand the spray is rather misty, and dries quickly. Pirate wouldn't like being sprayed either, so I was thinking of getting a pair of rubber gloves, spraying the glove, and then rubbing it onto his fur. The Frontline spray is economical, though (I've seen it for less than $30 for a 250mL bottle)

Really, though, I don't even use flea stuff if I don't see fleas. I vacuum daily, wash his bedding every week, and spritz him with some dilute skin-so-soft if we're walking in the woods to keep 'em off. Flame away, but I rarely see fleas.

No, that makes total sense to me. I don't always use flea stuff every month, and I haven't even SEEN fleas recently, but the baldness of Cherokee's tail is telling me they're lurking.. lol. I really think she's allergic to fleas, as in one bite and she miserable for a while. Sad

Max doesn't mind at all having it put on.  I use the Frontline Plus because the vet said that since we don't have ticks here I could use it every three months or so. I put some on in February and May and I'll probably put some more on next month. He very rarely scratches, but since he is occasionally around other dogs, I'd rather not take a chance of getting an infestation.

I always thought that avoid contact with skin, meant avoid *your* skin...it's supposed to come in contact with their's.

Except for Java who is blind, the other 2 do run.  I get Biscotti when she is sleeping (she's a bit deaf and doesn't hear me coming), but Buffy runs when she sees me coming.  I did catch her yesterday out of a sound sleep though.

I don't like to use it either, but Java is having terrible itchy problems, and it's gotta be something...doesn't appear to be fleas or food, might be more of a contact allergy, but I feel the need to cover all bases.

I use Frontline Plus and mine don't seem to care other than a mild dislike of the somewhat citrus-y smell.

    • Gold Top Dog

frontline plus user, they don't mind it at all.

I use the Frontline plus. Spip does not seem to mind; she just stands there until I'm done. Flem used to try to evade (read corner and/or tackle the dog was a sporting event) but now, she'll put her head between my legs and let me apply it without moving.

BTW, Flem is also the one who does her best to avoid ear cleaning, nail cutting, etc. You can brush her or pet her all you want but don't you dare minding business.

My KayCee hated having Frontfine, Advantix put on he and she would go get under the table.  Both she and Honey would run and roll after it was put on it.  And both would have fleas witin 10 days to 2 weeks and I am not talkin about 2 or 3, i would be get getting dozens with th flea comb. and I talked a a lot of folks here who were having the same problem.  Many of us had used it for years and it use to work very well, but not any more.

After kayCee's death 2 months ago, I started Honey on those Comfortis flea tablets.  They do not work for ticks, but we have not had a tick on any of our dogs in a few years.  Well, i bought a single tablet to start with and she did great on it and 5 week later, still noa sngle flea, and belleive me, on this coastal sand, fleas are horird.  I bought the 6 pack after we got a lot of rain I did give her one.  I do not give once a month as it seems t work much longer than that.

See, the problem with Program, and I'm guessing Comfortis, is the fleas actually have to bite the dog to die..and I understand that eventually it totally breaks the life cycle and no more fleas, but if a dog's allergic to fleas, one flea bite is enough to make them itchy for weeks, so the fact that fleas have to bite to die is not exactly acceptable.

Frontline plus would cost me $65 a month for all 6 animals. Advantage costs me under $20. I can't afford that right now. But maybe I can get a tube for Jaz, who seems to mind the Advantage the most, and see if he reacts the same way...

Chelsea, my guess is probably it's become the "Oh NO!!" game and it's not so much the 'thing' as the fact that "HE doesn't like it so *I* won't Like it" and "If the DOG doesn't like it then surely *I* won't!!"

Snap on a leash (or use a noose leash) and offer something yummy as you do it.  Preferably something that will keep their mouth busy for a minute like sticky baby food or peanut butter or a baby sausage.

Change the situation and you will change the result I bet.

I wouldn't say Kee enjoys getting the Frontline spray but it works.  I only use about half what it says (I think it says one spray per pound).

Chelsea I'm NOT sure it's for cats tho -- ask the vet!

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh geez, nevermind... Frontline top spot is the same for dogs and cats, and Frontline plus only has more of one ingredient in the CAT, meaning using dog stuff on cats would at worst not work as well (edit: this doesn't really make sense, does it? I mean, it's not like dogs and cats have different fleas..a flea's a flea..so why does the cat Frontline Plus have a higher percentage of S-Methoprene?). I'm buying Frontline next time and dosing it out same as I do with Advantage...

Callie, I'd probably think the same as you if someone else was posting about this, and I'm not saying you're wrong..but you should see these animals... They seriously act like it hurts. Maybe it's just the trickling down the neck feeling, but it's kind of disturbing...

And yeah, the "avoid contact with skin" of course does mean humans, but am I really the only one bothered by that? Pouring something directly on our pets that's not even supposed to TOUCH our skin??

    • Gold Top Dog

Well, we don't have fleas, so avoid the contact with something you don't need to.
