    Mindless Chatter Sunday

No one did one for yesterday or has started today, so I will.

I have been having fun with the old dryer. I got it in 1994. A few years ago, while cleaning lint out of it, I busted the heating element. So, I replaced that and it worked fine. Then a week ago, it wasn't drying. So, I replaced the heat element, again. It worked. DW did her laundry. The next day, I do mine. Two hours later, the dryer is still running and not drying. So, I surmise that the two sensors on the element housing are not working. And I replace those. It turns out that one is a thermostat and one is a high limit cut-off switch. The cut-off will burn out and disconnect power if the element gets too hot, in order to prevent a fire hazard. I start the dryer, it's getting hot so I turn it off, considered the job done. My clothes have been damp for a day and a half so I re-wash them. Stick in the dryer. 2 hours later the dryer is still running and not drying. I have burned out the new cut-off switch. Curses, foiled again. After some discussion with the parts where I bought the stuff, I surmise there must be something else wrong, such as the timer which tells the element when to turn on and off for different temperature settings. By this point, I have already spent about $100 in parts and some sweat equity (the dryer is in the garage, only place to put, and I've already been in the 95 degree heat all day). Now, I'm looking at another new set of t-stat and switch, and possibly a new timer and more than likely, an appliance repair expert who does this every day and whatever his labor charges are. Spit on that. It's time for a new dryer. So, I buy one on Wednesday and it got delivered yesterday. The brought the new one and took away the old one. So, I decide to do something different with the dryer vent.

The house was not built to have a dryer vent. When the house was built in 1969, people in this part of Texas did not have electric dryers. The washer taps used to be in the kitchen and the dryer was the two poles in the back with two lines. When a dryer was added, they turned the water taps around and faced them into the garage and dropped a wire down the wall and cut in a 240 volt plug next to it. But there is no way to get through the foundation wall to underneath the house and the garage floor is a separate concrete slab about 4 inches below the foundation sill wall. The dryer should have been installed along the exterior wall of the garage and a dryer vent stubbed out that way. And I may eventually do that.

What I had going on with the old dryer was about 20 feet of flexible 4 inch air duct led out through the garage door. But that flex collects lint like no one's business. So, I decided to change most of that to sheet metal duct, laying on the floor. And got my butt kicked again. I work around duct hangers all the time but I don't pay attention to what they do. So, I had to go back to Home Depot and have someone show me how to roll the duct sheet metal until the tongue and groove fit together.

Finally, success. I had to wash some bed linens. Euphoria. And a good thing. I'm on my last clean pair of jeans. But, I can dry the old-fashioned way if I had to.

As I get older, I learn when to recognize when my butt has been kicked. And that sometimes, the cheaper thing is to buy something new. 14 years isn't bad for the old dryer.

    Migraine.  Ow.  Enough said.

Sad I'm sorry, migraines are terrible.  I used to get them all the time until I figured out what I was reacting to.  :::passes Kate some Excedrin and homemade cookies:::

Today is a good day.  I'm getting work done around the house, Nike officially sits and lays down on command, and my mom's birthday party is tonight.  It should be a fun day. Smile

Ohh Lisa, what was in those cookies?!  You fixed it, migraine is gone.  May also have been the co-codamol and the nap I took....but I like to think it was the cookies.

    Have fun at the party!

I had such plans for this weekend.  I was going to do SO MUCH round the house.  I have done NOTHING of note.  Poo.

Today has been good though.  This morning I got up early (for a Sunday) and William and I went out for a walk with the dogs.  And then after I'd done breakfast for everybody I packed a bag for Will and we went down to the river to meet a friend of mine and feed the ducks.  Will loves the ducks.  All four of us went to the swimming pool and the little ones had a grand time.  Then we went for a coffee and a bite to eat and Will behaved very nicely at the table.  I bought a new book for Will ("Monkey Puzzle";) and one for me before we came home.  He was cream crackered and slept for about 3 hours until his Auntie came round to see him with (more) new clothes.  He sat and played with her for a bit, showing her his tractor and his cars and putting soft toys in the back seats and making them "go".

Just now I am watching the end of The Great Escape.  William has been in bed almost an hour (it's nearly 8pm here) and we are having a quiet and relaxing evening.  I'm not even goin to cook.  I've just had a bacon sandwich and a cuppa.  Sigh.  The sun is shining and its a lovely evening so in a little while I'm going to open the (brand new) patio doors and sit outside in the evening sun with my new book....

I'm glad I already did my chores!  I was supposed to get cooler but it's been sunny, hot, and humid.  When I got up I started on laundry, cleaned the bathroom, sorted the bathroom closet, and put up my wet agility tent to dry.

After Kenya's agility trial yesterday, I am officially on a dog break.  We'll finish up the class we are currently in, but then no more classes or formal training for a while.

I'm really excited for my new puppy.  If the bitch is not pregnant I will be crushed.  I talked to the breeder about it yesterday.  We are excited for the pups and have big plans for them.  Another young couple from my city came by to pick up their puppy from an earlier litter and we all want to show our pups and get into SV shows.  This kid that helps out at the breeder's kennel and helps teach training classes is getting one too.  She thinks we will all like each other and will have fun raising our pups.  She said to me, "I can't believe it's only been a year since you got Chopper, I feel like I've known you forever..." lol.

Friday we had SchH club at her place as well and she invited a couple who train and compete in ring sport and police simulations to come evaluate our dogs and help set goals.  They said Kenya was the best prospect and I was floored.  They did not believe me when I said she was the first dog of my very own and I'm still not sure I believe them that she is suitable for ring sport, but they are the experts!  I have no plans to actually DO ring sport, but they want us to start small.  For now all I have to do is try to teach her to bark on command and to jump and bite.  The second thing she can already do (jump up and bite a toy or tug held horizontally).  We have to work on tug games and full bites to get that drive out of her and let her have more fun with toys.  The barking will be tough since she rarely barks, but I think it will be a fun thing for her, getting marked and rewarded for barking!

Between today and yesterday, I wired half the outlets in the new house and spent, oh.... something like 8 hours mudding and taping drywall.  Of the two, I prefer electrical wiring.  They both beat sitting at a desk all day.

I can't wait until BF is done with this side job (where I helped him mud/tape the drywall) so that we can plug a lot of hours on the new house.  New cabinets are getting ordered tomorrow.. woohoo.  The fun begins!

*sigh* - back to regular work tomorrow... trading work boots for heels.. :(

I feel the same way, too. Heck, I get paid to do wiring. I prefer to other jobs that can be had.
