Yes we allow them on invitation only -- and certain places, not. It's their house too, is my feeling. Your road is a bit harder -- becuase honestly no way would I have married someone with that "the only way I'll allow a dog is ..." attitude. It just wouldn't mesh with me.
When I foster I don't allow fosters on the furniture simply because it keeps that bit of distance needed so that a foster doesn't feel like a 'failure' when he then goes to his forever home (some dogs can feel like they screwed up and got 'bounced' when the plan originally was "this is NOT your forever home -- you are a foster!";)
I feel like there needs to be some boundaries -- just like I wouldn't let a teenager rub his shoes on my sofa, the dog has to be 'invited' and not when they're a muddy mess either! But part of it for me is that I want to share my seat with them -- so it's pleasure for all.
